Mickey Harte admits it’s ‘Very unlikely’ Offaly will play in All-Ireland SFC this summer after Division 3 league glory
MICKEY Harte reckons it’s ‘very unlikely’ Offaly will play in the All-Ireland SFC this summer – despite claiming the NFL Division 3 title.
Joint boss Harte has taken just eight months to deliver silverware for the Faithful, the sixth league title of the Tyrone great’s managerial career.

Cormac Egan, the poster boy in a talented young Offaly team, struck the 56th minute goal that went a long way towards killing off wasteful Kildare.
Egan added a point late on too as Offaly turned the screw with an unanswered 1-3 in a blistering six-minute spell.
Keith O’Neill walked away with the Man of the Match award after contributing four important points from play.
And full-forward Jack Bryant was another strong performer in green, white and yellow, blasting 1-3 in the opening half and providing a platform for the landmark victory.
But while Offaly rocked Croke Park with their heavy metal, all-action style of play, they’ll probably still have to settle for life in the Tailteann Cup this summer.
Down are Tailteann Cup holders so are guaranteed a spot in the All-Ireland SFC.
It means Offaly will have to reach the Leinster final to qualify themselves, a journey that would almost certainly require them to beat Dublin.
Harte said: “It’s a very unlikely event, put it like that.
“What we have to play to get there, it seems very unlikely that we’ll get that route so it seems like we won’t be there. Look, that’s a pity, it would have been great to be there.
“But the rules are the rules. As they transpire, it doesn’t favour us at the minute. But look, we have to go where we find ourselves and whatever level we’re playing at there’s going to be no easy games.
“Everybody is out to win whatever competition they’re in, whatever cup they’re in, so I don’t think it makes a lot of difference at this point in time.
“If we want to continue to win silverware, we have to really keep focused and keep working hard and get the rub of the green and all of that stuff.”
It was still a coming of age performance from an Offaly team containing seven players who featured in the county’s All-Ireland U-20 final win of 2021.
They have a long way to go to meet their ceiling.
Captain Lee Pearson is among the ex-U-20 crew and said the new rules suit them down to the ground. Covering the hard yards is no problem to a side that cut Kildare’s defence asunder for two cracking goals.
Bryant burst through for their first goal after just four minutes, rifling to the top corner of Kildare’s net.
Egan did a similar slalom move through the Kildare backline for his goal, finishing cleverly with a low, right-footed finish in a crowded area.
Pearson said: “We’ve a young team, plenty of energy, plenty of legs. We’re able to move at speed down through the middle so yeah, the new rules definitely do suit us.”
But they also got a helping hand from a Kildare side with a penchant for wasting great chances.
The Lilies struck 13 wides, seven of which came in a second-half when they also hit the woodwork and dropped a point attempt short.
And Kildare fans in the 21,596 crowd were pulling their hair out in the 41st minute when Darragh Kirwan burst through and shot straight at the goalkeeper – with Niall Kelly free on his left.
It was Kildare’s second loss to Offaly in a matter of weeks and they also lost to Clare so were fortunate to gain promotion on scoring difference.
Kildare manager Brian Flanagan said: “Listen, we had 38 shots. We had enough chances, we created enough. That’s been something throughout the league, in all our games, including the two or three that we lost. We’ve had enough chances to win.”
Kildare will host Westmeath in Newbridge next Saturday week in their Leinster opener.
Flanagan said Ben McCormack and Daniel Flynn should be available but Jimmy Hyland is a doubt with a hamstring injury.
Alex Beirne had his moments at Croke Park, firing five points while Kirwan hit three in a row to push Offaly all the way.
Kirwan had a kick for a two-pointer after the buzzer which would have levelled the game but it flew wide.
