Major update on NC500 camper van ban ahead of tourist season
CAMPERVAN drivers facing a ban on spending the night in publicly-owned car parks along the NC500 will be able to stop after a U-turn from council chiefs.
Holidaymakers have been told they will not be blocked from pulling up at the spots on the popular route amid concerns over “inappropriate waste disposal” and “antisocial behaviour”.

The Highland Council had threatened to block motorhomes from the sites in Durness and Golspie in Sutherland overnight — a move which would have cost taxpayers £41,000.
Drivers can park overnight for just £10, but cannot return within 72 hours.
They would have been directed to official campsites under the proposals.
But critics raised concerns motorists would flout the rules by stopping in rural areas causing a threat to biodiversity.
The NC500 was first promoted a decade ago as a tourist trail taking in some of the country’s most breathtaking beauty spots.
The route starts in Inverness and takes in coastal landmarks, including stunning beaches, lighthouses and the UK‘s most northerly settlement John o’ Groats.
More than 29,000 people made the journey the year it was launched.
Drivers have clashed with those living along the route over noise, litter and traffic jams on narrow roads.
We told how an eco-friendly family removed a staggering 15 tonnes of rubbish from NC500 beaches.
The labour of love began for Geoff and Rachel Pringle plus their kids Finlay, 17, and Ella, 15, after they tidied up a site near their home in Ullapool, Wester Ross.
Now the total amount of trash they’ve collected in 368 beach cleans has topped 15,048kg.
Geoff, 58, said: “We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of Scotland. With help from locals and visitors alike, it can continue to be so.
“If we all picked up a bit of litter we would see a big difference.”
Councillors this week voted on the restrictions and no further action will be taken.

Four cash-saving ideas to make your mum a beautiful homemade Mother’s Day card
A HOMEMADE card costs less but means more – so pack one with personality to make Mother’s day.
Take a little time to push the envelope with these easy ideas.

ALL FINGERS AND THUMBS: Using kids’ paint-covered fingers, thumbs and hands can create a magical picture.
Draw a tree outline on the front of the card and top it with ‘fingerprint’ blossom in shades of pink and purple.
Create a butterfly design using two painted handprints joined just below the thumbs and decorate with glitter.
Write a slogan on the front and use a little one’s handprint to replace the ‘o’ in love or ‘u’ in mummy.
CUT ABOVE: Use scissors to cut out flower or heart shapes from wrapping paper or coloured card. You can even use plain paper and colour it in.
Glue it on to plain card to look like heart-shaped balloons or a bouquet of flowers, drawing in strings or stems.
Add a thoughtful message inside, spelling out what makes mum special.
CREATIVE COLOURING: If you have a printer at home, you can use a free online template and colour it in using bright pencils and pens.
You can download templates from sites such as bakerross.co.uk and the ideas section at hobbycraft.co.uk.
If that’s not possible, find a cute picture in a colouring book at home. Go all out to fill it in beautifully and then cut it out and stick in on a card.
The Works has a pack of 30 blank white cards and envelopes for £3.50 and these can be used for homemade cards all year round.
POETIC LICENCE: The best words to put on a card are ones from the heart.
But someone else’s sentiments can also hit the spot.
If you’re lost for words, try searching online for poems or quotes about mothers and then use the verses that describe how you feel in your own homemade card.

‘Genuinely scary’ – Irish people living in Bangkok reveal ‘terrifying’ escape from deadly earthquake as buildings shook
IRISH people living in Bangkok have spoken of their terror after a devastating earthquake rocked Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand.
More than 140 people have died and hundreds are injured in Myanmar and Thailand following a massive 7.7 magnitude quake.

Tremors from the earthquake were felt in neighbouring countries, including Thailand, where an unfinished high-rise collapsed in Bangkok, killing at least eight people.
Shock videos from Myanmar and Thailand show high-rise buildings being reduced to rubble and religious buildings and homes completely crumbling, with a major search and rescue mission continuing tonight.
Amid the mayhem, an Irish PE teacher in Bangkok told how children screamed in terror as the tremors hit.
Leona Kelly, 31, was in a sports hall attending a school match when the Thai capital was plunged in chaos.
She said: “We did feel the shock.
“There were kids starting to scream. It was just a little bit chaotic.
“At first, I was a little bit scared. I didn’t really know what it was.
“I felt a little bit lightheaded. Then I quickly realised what it was.
“The first thing I did do was text my family and let them know what had happened.”
Ms Kelly revealed that there was “significant shaking of buildings” with high rise buildings “swaying”, and water cascading from rooftop swimming pools.
She declared: “There was significant damage around the city.”
And Ms Kelly admitted locals were gripped by “nervous apprehension to see if there is going to be any more aftershocks or tremors”.
The young woman also highlighted how public transport has been suspended and that there are “lots of people piling out onto the streets”.
Donegal native Travis Leon Price also revealed his terrifying experience after the devastating earthquake hit.
The Irish TikToker, who has been living and working in Thailand since 2021, captured a video as the quake rocked the country.
“There were kids starting to scream. It was just a little bit chaotic.”

His footage showed a swimming pool splashing and spilling over the edge due to the tremors.
Travis fled his apartment, which is on the 40th floor of his building, during the ordeal.
Detailing his experience he told his TikTok followers: “Bangkok was just hit by an earthquake.
“That was genuinely so scary.
“I was all the way up on the 40th floor.
‘ROOM WAS SWAYING’
“The room was swaying side to side – I thought I was having vertigo.
“I looked out over the balcony and I could see the pool splashing over the edge.”
Travis had to run down the security stairs of his building, which took him around 20 minutes, to get outside the skyscraper.
He continued: “We had to run down the security stairs while everything was falling.
“That was terrifying.
‘BUILDING ARE FALLING APART’
“Buildings are falling apart literally.”
Meanwhile, Dublin woman Julie Mehigan, Christian Aid’s Head of Asia, Middle East & Europe, called for an “urgent emergency response” to the quake disaster.
Ms Mehigan said: “This disaster has left people isolated, devastated and in need of drinking water, food and shelter.
“Christian Aid has heard from partners and colleagues on the ground that the Kyaukse Kinta Dam has burst in Mandalay with water levels rising in the lowland areas around.
“We are working closely with our partners and networks to identify the extent of the existing damage and risk to communities there. Mandalay airport is closed to international and domestic travel due to damage to the infrastructure.
HELP NEEDED
“Christian Aid is reaching out to our partners to carry out assessments to identify the most vulnerable people who need our help immediately. However, with a nationwide power outage, communication will continue to be challenging.
“Myanmar is one of the least developed countries in the world. Even before this heartbreaking earthquake, we know conflict and displacement has left countless people in real need. Every prayer and every gift will bring hope to people hit by disaster.”
The quake was so powerful that it was picked up by seismometers in Ireland.
FELT BACK HOME
Just over half an hour after the initial quake, a shock wave from it was picked up by Irish National Seismic monitors in Tipperary and Mayo.
It was also recorded by other seismic stations across the country, including in Louth, Inch Island in Donegal, Wexford, Galway, and west Cork.
The Irish National Seismic Network said such was the strength of the quake, seismographs in Valentia in Kerry and in Dublin also recorded sound wave readings over a 15-minute period from just before 7am this morning.
