Major fashion retailer with more than 350 stores to close shopping centre location in WEEKS

A MAJOR fashion retailer with more than 350 stores will close a shopping centre location in weeks.

New Look will close it’s two-storey shop in the Willow Place shopping centre on June 1.

The news has come as a blow for locals who said the “town centre has nothing to offer for anyone”.

While another upset shopper said it was “sad news for the town centre”.

A third said the people need to stop online shopping, blaming the rise in the practise for the stores closures. his is what’s doing it.

A spokesperson for New Look told The Sun: “Our Corby store is set to close on 1 June. We would like to thank all of our colleagues and the local community for their support over the years.

“We hope customers continue to shop with us online at newlook.com, where our full product ranges can be found.”

The store will close in just shy of two months time, giving shoppers a short while to say their goodbyes.

It’ comes as the local River Island branch is also set to shut within the shopping centre at the end of April.

Meanwhile, the future of the WHSmith store located within the outlet also hangs in the balance

Last week, the beloved newsagents said it would sell all 500 of its high street store in a £76million.

The 232 year-old British business has agreed to sell the chain to Modella Capital, with the stores eventually rebranded as TGJones.

The store has over 580 travel stores across airports, hospitals, railway stations and motorway service areas which will continue to live on.

WHSmith has already reduced its portfolio of stores massively, with plans to shut 20 of its sites by May.

As for New Look, the store has shut a number of branches in preparation for this month’s  National Insurance hike.

Approximately a quarter of the retailer’s 364 stores are at risk when their leases expire.

This equates to about 91 stores, with a significant impact on its 8,000-strong workforce.

Last month, it closed branches in St Austell and Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

The chain has previously closed locations in Porth, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Wickford, Essex.

New Look also closed down its 26 stores in Ireland after its Irish arm entered into liquidation.

TROUBLE ON THE HIGH STREET

It comes amid a challenging time for the UK’s retail market.

Select Fashion entered into liquidation last Friday, in a move which will see 35 stores closed and 48 rescued by Essence Fashion.

None of the 40 staff members at the affected Select Fashion stores will be paid their weekly wages for the time they worked before the stores closed – nor will they be given a redundancy package.

Back in February, Quiz tumbled into insolvency, closing 23 stores.

Even H&M has shaken up its store estate revealing plans to either close its standalone Monki stores or to integrate the brand with another one of its fashion lines, Weekday.

The Swedish clothing giant has also confirmed plans to close its Arket store in the Bullring on April 6.

RETAIL PAIN IN 2025

The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion.

Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April.

A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024.

Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure.

The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.

It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: “The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025.”

Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector.

“By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer’s household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020.”

‘Funny & happy’ little girl ‘died in her sleep hours after being sent home from hospital with Calpol’

[/boxout]

Kris described his daughter as “pale and clingy”, and said the doctor appeared to have “given up”.

No blood tests or further checks were carried out, and the family was sent home at 6am with no medication, simply told to monitor her.

That evening, December 18, Hailey appeared to sleep peacefully after being given Calpol.

Her parents checked on her before heading to bed and Kris said he last checked on Hailey at midnight, noticing her breathing was no longer laboured.

The court heard the A&E doctor on December 18 tried to check her oxygen levels, but Hailey wouldn’t sit still.

Mum Ibolya said all her symptoms should have been checked and that she “assumed” Hailey’s records would have been checked.

But the next morning, on December 19, any hope of recovery had turned into a nightmare

At 5.30am, Ibolya found Hailey cold in her cot with Kris dialling 999, saying “she’s dying”.

She was rushed to hospital but died just after 7.30am, the inquest heard.

In her statement, Ibolya described the moments that followed as “a blur“.

The jury heard a cause of death was given as sepsis and pneumonia, but that was later changed to include Group A streptococcus, a bacterial infection.

The inquest has been listed to be heard over five days.

Towie’s Frankie Sims shows off ‘new face’ after getting lip and under eye fillers dissolved

TOWIE’S Frankie Sims has shown off her ‘new face’ after getting her lip and under eye fillers dissolved.

Frankie, 29, took to Instagram to share her experience, revealing that she was shocked to discover she still had old filler lingering under her eyes from years ago.

In a candid video, Frankie explained that she initially visited the VA Clinic in Essex for a skin-boosting treatment but was advised to dissolve the filler instead.

She told her followers: “So I’ve just popped in to see Corinne at the VA Clinic. Please ignore all my makeup, it’s all been rubbed off. But I just wanted to go in and show her my under eyes. They were really puffy, a little bit blue and black, and I just looked really tired.”

Frankie, who had under-eye filler around five years ago, was surprised to learn that the puffiness and discolouration she had been experiencing were due to leftover filler.

She explained: “All she’s done is just dissolved it. And literally, it’s gone down already.”

The reality star also used the opportunity to raise awareness for others who may be experiencing similar issues.

She advised: “If you had filler years ago and you’re having trouble with discolouration and puffiness, it could be old filler.”

Frankie now has the option to leave her under-eyes natural or consider further treatments, but she seems delighted with her refreshed look.

Not stopping there, Frankie also decided to dissolve her lip filler during the same appointment.

In another video, she continued: “So while I was there, I was just feeling crazy.

“I also got her to dissolve my lips. So that’s why my top lip and my bottom lip are really swollen and red right now – not because I’ve had filler before anyone comes for me.

“I’ve actually had all the filler removed, so my face is now filler-free, guys.”

The star explained that it will take about a week to see the final results but is already feeling great about her decision.

Frankie joked in her caption: “This doesn’t mean I’m never gonna have any tweaks every again but definitely was time to remove everything from the past.

“Cheers to embracing becoming more natural.”

Demi’s estranged sister Chloe has also opted for the au naturale look in recent years.

In 2021, Chloe showed fans just how different she looked after making the “personal” decision to dissolve her lips.

Sharing a series of before and after pictures to her Stories, the Essex favourite explained: “So I decided to remove my fillers…the first photo is before, the second is without filler & the third is my more natural look.

“I’m really happy that I’ve toned it all down, and as you know I think it’s important to be honest with things like this.”

She concluded: “It’s my personal choice & makes me feel confident.”

Over 10 years, it’s thought that Chloe spent over £32,000 on surgery – including two boob jobs, a £4,500 Brazilian bum lift, Botox and veneers.

What are the risks of lip fillers?

THE RISKS of dermal fillers depend on whether the procedure was done correctly and the type of filler used.

The NHS recommends you speak to your practitioner about the risks beforehand.

Serious problems are rare but can include:

  • Infection
  • A lumpy appearance under the skin, which might need to be treated with surgery or medicine
  • The filler moving away from the intended treatment area, which may need to be removed using surgery
  • Scarring
  • Blocked blood vessels in the face, which can cause tissue death and permanent blindness

You should see your GP if you have any complications that need medical attention and speak to your practitioner if you’re not happy with the results or experience lumpiness.

‘Incredible’ – Hollywood A-Lister launches new UFC film with Dana White set to rival Conor McGregor’s ‘Roadhouse’

THE Ultimate Fighting Championship is set to get the Hollywood treatment thanks to an A-list director.

A new project depicting the gruelling journey to the summit of mixed martial arts’ premier promotion has been announced.

The movie has been teased for well over a year[/caption]

And it will be directed by critically acclaimed director Zac Snyder, with the backing of the Chairman of Saudi Arabia‘s General Entertainment Authority, Turki Alalshikh.

‘Brawler’ will depict a young up-and-coming fighter getting a crack at UFC glory after rising from the “rough streets of Los Angeles” while “battling his inner demons.”

UFC CEO and President Dana White said of the film: “Turki Alalshikh and Zack Snyder have a shared vision to create a film about UFC.

“They are both very passionate about this project to show fans what it takes to become a UFC champion.

“It’s an incredibly ambitious project, and I look forward to seeing it come to life.”

Synder, who directed Hollywood blockbusters 300 and Justice League, said: “Behind every great fighter is the story of how they got there.

“UFC is the world leader in combat sports and I’m honoured to be partnering with them to tell this incredible story.”

Alalshikh, who recently announced the formation of TKO Boxing with White, began teasing a UFC movie with Snyder last year.

And he’s delighted that the wheels are finally in motion, saying: “I’ve been a fan of Zack’s work for years.

“His unique style, from his iconic action sequences to his sweeping visuals and intensely emotional storytelling – coupled with his humanised portrayal of deeply flawed characters – is singular.

“I couldn’t think of a better person to partner with to bring the UFC to the big screen.”

Cast members for the film, which doesn’t have a release date, are currently a mystery.

But it’s likely Snyder and his Stone Quarry production label will film scenes for the movie at live UFC events.

Producers for the 2024 remake of ‘Roadhouse’, which starred former two-division champion Conor McGregor, filmed a fight scene during UFC 285 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in March 2023.

Fans in attendance were left stunned as Jake Gyllenhaal twice performed a full octagon walk and threw down with former UFC welterweight Jey Hieron.

When I spotted blood in my poo I feared the worst after watching my dad face cancer, says BBC star Gaby Roslin

IT is not all glitz and glam in the celeb world – Bowel Cancer Awareness Month is upon us and stars are sharing their “poo tales”.

It is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, with 44,000 new cases a year, but diagnosing it early makes a difference.

Launching today, The Toilet Talk is a social media series inspired by Sun columnist Dame Deborah James, who died of the disease age 40 in 2022

TV and radio presenter Gaby Roslin, 60, is among those being gutsy and telling her most embarrassing story and she said: “If this series helps even one person catch their bowel cancer early, it’s worth it.”

The series aims to encourage people to talk about their poo and bowel habits with friends, family and those they trust.

The hope is that by doing so, people will feel more comfortable and empowered to speak to a doctor if they do spot something unusual.

Nearly a third of UK adults say they would be too embarrassed to talk to their doctor about poo or bowel changes, data shows.
Symptoms of bowel cancer can be spotted in the loo.

Blood in stool, on the toilet paper, or changes to bowel habits such as constipation or diarrhoea, are all key signs.

Shout from rooftops

“If there’s blood or changes in your poo, don’t sit on it — see a doctor!” Gaby says.

Dame Debs set up the Bowelbabe Fund with Cancer Research UK after years of campaigning to break the “poo taboo” and raise awareness of the disease.

She was diagnosed aged 35, after blaming symptoms such as “going what felt like 100 times per day” and fatigue on being a full-time working super mum.

Deborah launched the fund after she returned to her parents’ home in Woking to spend her final days, hoping to raise £250,000.

But she smashed her target and before she passed away in June 2022, the total stood at £6.7million. Today, that figure is up to £17million.

Remembering her late friend, Gaby says: “Her wicked sense of humour and passion for raising awareness saved countless lives.

“She showed that talking about bowel cancer doesn’t have to be scary, it can even be joyful.”

Gaby has been raising awareness of bowel cancer for three decades.

Her dad, Clive, a former BBC radio announcer, was diagnosed with the disease in the late Nineties. Then, even the word “bowel” was considered too taboo for TV.

Gaby says: “We wanted to publicise and we were being interviewed, and the journalist who was interviewing us said, ‘Sorry Clive, you just can’t say poo’.

“Dad said: ‘But that’s what I’m talking about — bowel cancer’.

“‘Can you not mention bowels?’, they said.”

Mum-of-two Dame Deborah danced around in a poo costume on public transport, still looking glamorous, and shouted from the rooftops about the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer.

Gaby says: “I thought, I’ve got to get her on my radio show because she’s talking about poo, and as a family, that’s something that has affected us, too. So she came in and we just got on.

“We became friends and had a lovely friendship.”

Debs spearheaded The Sun’s No Time 2 Lose campaign with Bowel Cancer UK that successfully lobbied for the age of bowel cancer screening to be dropped from 60.

Now everyone in England will receive a test every two years from the age of 50 to 74.

The at-home test checks for blood in the poo, a sign of potential cancer. Gaby says: “It comes through the door and you take a little scoop of your poo (with a stick) and send it back to the lab and get your results.”

The mum-of-two has previously had a scare after finding blood in her poo in 2001.

Gaby went to the GP but was relieved when told it was piles from after childbirth.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God, I need to find out about it’, because I obviously had a history of bowel cancer in my family,” she says.

What are the red flag warning signs of bowel cancer?

IT'S the fourth most common cancer in the UK, the second deadliest - yet bowel cancer can be cured, if you catch it early enough.

While screening is one way of ensuring early diagnosis, there are things everyone can do to reduce their risk of the deadly disease.

Being aware of the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer, spotting any changes and checking with your GP can prove a life-saver.

If you notice any of the signs, don’t be embarrassed and don’t ignore them. Doctors are used to seeing lots of patients with bowel problems.

The five red-flag symptoms of bowel cancer include:

  • Bleeding from the back passage, or blood in your poo
  • A change in your normal toilet habits – going more frequently for example
  • Pain or a lump in your tummy
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Losing weight

Tumours in the bowel typically bleed, which can cause a shortage of red blood cells, known as anaemia. It can cause tiredness and sometimes breathlessness.

In some cases bowel cancer can block the bowel, this is known as a bowel obstruction.

Other signs include:

  • Gripping pains in the abdomen
  • Feeling bloated
  • Constipation and being unable to pass wind
  • Being sick
  • Feeling like you need to strain – like doing a number two – but after you’ve been to the loo

While these are all signs to watch out for, experts warn the most serious is noticing blood in your stools.

But, they warn it can prove tricky for doctors to diagnose the disease, because in most cases these symptoms will be a sign of a less serious disease.

Recalling her dad’s diagnosis, Gaby says: “He came back from a holiday with mum and told us he’d started pooing himself.

“Then he found some blood in his poo and told his brother. Thank goodness he did, for his brother — a doctor — urged him to seek help immediately.

“It was caught early. Twenty-nine years later my dad is still alive,” Gaby says.

Early diagnosis saves lives — in England, more than 90 per cent of people with bowel cancer survive the disease for five years or more, if diagnosed at the earliest stage.

EARLY DIAGNOSIS

This falls to ten per cent when bowel cancer is diagnosed at the most advanced stage four.

That’s why talking about it is so important.

“I can tell you a very weird story,” Gaby says.

“I went ice skating and realised I needed a poo. There were lots of people on the rink and as I skated off my husband said, ‘Where are you going?’, and I said, ‘I need a poo!’ as I cut through . . .  as you do!

“You know those times you just need to go.

“As I pooed with my ice skates on I realised how ridiculous it was.

“I went back out on the rink and thought, ‘No one knows I just pooed in my ice skates’.

“I have a very warped sense of humour.”

But while bowel cancer is no laughing matter, talking about poo doesn’t need to be daunting.

“If there’s any slightest change, if you are a little bit worried, talk to family, talk to friends,” Gaby says.

Glasgow schoolgirl, 16, ‘grabbed by man’ in terrifying incident before suspect chased off by lollipop man

A GLASGOW schoolgirl was “grabbed by a man” in a terrifying incident before the suspect was chased off by a lollipop man.

Cops were called to the city’s Hill Street in the Garnethill area, near St Aloysius’ College, after the alarm was raised around 9:35am yesterday.

Officers say the 16-year-old girl was “grabbed” by the individual who was then confronted by a lollipop man and made off.

An email to parents and carers from St Aloysius’ College reads: “We want to make you aware of an incident that took place near the school on March 31.

“At around 9am an individual, not connected to our school, acted in a threatening manner towards one of our S4 pupils on the street.

“Thanks to the vigilance and quick response of our crossing patrol and janitorial staff, the situation was swiftly handled, and the matter is now with the police. Most importantly, the pupil involved is safe.

“We want to reassure you that this was an isolated incident and not directed at our school community.

“As a precautionary measure, we have reminded all staff to be extra vigilant during arrival and dismissal times this week.

“We understand that events like this can be unsettling. If you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Speaking to The Scottish Sun, one concerned parent said: “We are worried as the kids have to go in between buildings and they are out at lunchtime. It’s a real dodgy area now”.

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Around 9.35am on Monday, 31 March 2025 police received a report of a man having grabbed a 16-year-old girl in Hill Street, Glasgow.

“Police attended and enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances of the incident and trace the man.”

Glasgow City Council was approached for comment.
