THE Kinahan cartel has been classified as one of Europe’s “largest criminal organisations”.
The claim was made by a Spanish investigator in a major television show on Daniel Kinahan’s mob.
Entitled ‘Kinahan — The True Story of Ireland’s Mafia’, the BBC show will feature four episodes. In an interview in episode 2, the investigator from the Central Drugs and Organised Crime Unit in Spain said: “The Irish are very strong in drug trafficking. They are very violent and murderous.”
The programme charts the formation of the criminal mob by Christy ‘Dapper Don’ Kinahan in the 1980s before becoming a transnational drugs gang.
The series — which features contributions from Irish Sun Crime Editor Stephen Breen and Irish Sun reporter Michael Doyle — also highlights Operation Shovel in 2010, the attempted murder of Daniel Kinahan in 2014, the murder of Gary Hutch in 2015, and the Kinahan-Hutch feud.
And it will also deal with the global fight against the mob, the conviction of Thomas ‘Bomber’ Kavanagh, and Daniel Kinahan’s role in boxing.
A BBC spokesperson said: “The series tracks the Kinahan cartel from its beginnings as a small-time street dealing operation in 1980s Dublin, to one of the world’s most feared and notorious criminal gangs.
“It is a story of gangland feuding, betrayal, international law enforcement and murder.
“Providing new insight, information and exclusive interviews, this four-part series tells the in-depth story of the cartel known as the Kinahan Transnational Criminal Organisation (KTCO), with roots that start in Ireland but spread to the UK and around the world.”
And gangster Daniel Kinahan’s time as a free man might soon be coming to an end.
New Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan last month revealed that the Government is moving swiftly to capture and extradite the mobster from Dubai.
The Fianna Fail TD is hoping to wrap up an extradition agreement with the United Arab Emirates within weeks.
He said: “Officials in my department are currently liaising with counterparts in the UAE to advance all further ratification procedures in both jurisdictions, with a view to ensuring that the treaties are brought into force at the earliest opportunity.”
The Minister has told Cabinet colleagues the dismantling of the cartel is one of his top priorities.
