Scots zoo posts adorable pics of sugar gliders found dumped outside Lidl

A SCOTS zoo has shared adorable pictures of six sugar gliders who were “cruelly abandoned” outside a supermarket.

The tiny possums, native to Australia, were dumped in a box near a Lidl branch, leaving them exposed to the elements.

Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian is taking care of the animals after being alerted by Police Scotland and the Scottish SPCA earlier this month.

The sugar gliders, who are yet to be named, are currently undertaking a 30-day quarantine period.

Keepers are “closely monitoring” their health and behaviour before they are eventually moved into a new habitat.

The zoo wrote on social media: “We were recently contacted by Police Scotland and Scottish SPCA regarding six sugar gliders who had been cruelly abandoned in a box outside a Lidl supermarket.

“Sugar gliders are a tropical species, and being left to fend for themselves in the harsh Scottish winter did not give them the best chance of survival.

“While we are unable to accommodate every animal in need that comes our way, we remain committed to our animal rescue efforts, which is why we wanted to do everything we could to help in this situation.

“The sugar gliders, who are yet to be named, arrived two weeks ago and are currently in a 30-day quarantine period where our dedicated keepers are closely assessing their health and behaviour before they eventually move into a new habitat.

“Be sure to follow our social media for updates on their progress and to find out when you can meet these resilient little survivors!”

Members of the public flocked to the comments to react to the “cruel” act.

One wrote: “I hope they are going to be okay after their trauma, glad you are looking after them. They are beautiful wee things.”

Another said: “What is wrong with some people? Let’s dump them in the freezing cold weather and see how long they survive.”

A third fumed: “Awful to leave animals anywhere who can’t fend for themselves.”

A fourth weighed in: “Why do people not think to reach out and ask for help? Those poor little things must be so scared. Can’t stand it when folk do this.”

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

Coronation Street legend lands new job on rival soap after 26 years on the cobbles and shock exit

CORONATION Street legend Martin Hancock is swapping the cobbles for a new role in BBC’s Casualty.

The actor, who is best known for playing eco-warrior Spider Nugent on the ITV soap, will be joining the medical drama next week.

Martin, 56, is set to play newcomer Samuel Jankowski – a relation of show regular Indie Jankowski, played by Naomi Wakszlak.

Indie plays a fresh faced student paramedic on the show and has already been hailed an “icon” by fans.

The new role comes two years after Spider waved goodbye to the cobbles and to his on/off girlfriend Toyah Battersby.

Spider left after Toyah gave him an ultimatum – either stop working for the police or they were done.

He chose the force, and so he quit the cobbles once again after splitting from his true love.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Martin said: “Life’s gone wrong between them. It’s just bad luck and circumstance.

“What’s been happening previously in Spider’s life and what’s been happening previously in Toyah’s life have conspired to do them down at the end and it’s sad. They’re both very committed people but, for now, it’s not workable.”

Martin did say he doesn’t believe it’s the end for Toyah and Spider, adding: “I don’t think it’s the end. I don’t think it’s the end of the story. These two will always have a bit of love there… I think he’ll be desperately sad about the way things have ended.

“At the end of the day, whatever version of Spider we’re talking about, Spider loves Toyah and so he’s bound to feel sad. They’re both going to feel sad.

“There’s something between those two… it’s a 25 year relationship, of course they’re going to feel gutted they couldn’t make it work this time.”

But Martin has hinted that there could be another comeback for Spider.

Asked if he’d be happy to return to the cobbles in the future, he said: “Yes,”and laughing, he added: “That’s how long it took for me to decide that one.

“I said it the first time around, the second time around, the third time around and this is the fourth time around, yeah of course. I love the show.”

Major airline charging 20% more for Costa coffees on flights compared to high street prices

EASYJET is charging almost a third more for some Costa coffees on flights compared to high street prices.

The budget airline charges £3.95 for a small 12oz latte or cappuccino and £3.75 for a small Americano on flights, whereas the same drinks cost just £3.55 or £2.85 respectively in Hull’s Costa coffee branch.

Coffee prices are high-flying at EasyJet[/caption]

Prices do vary between Costa coffee branches.

For example,  Costa’s outlet in Morden, south London sells a small latte and cappuccino for £3.70 and £3 for an Americano.

Consumer expert Martyn James said:  “This latte tax is just another example of easyJet hitting their customers in the pocket.

“With the cost of an inflight cup of coffee going through the roof it is no surprise Brits are finding it more expensive to go on holiday.

“Flyers should tank up on caffeine before they board to avoid getting caught out paying through the nose for a brew onboard.”

EasyJet said: “Our pricing is competitive and based on the popularity of Costa Coffee onboard our flights it is clear are we are offering the options our customers want.”

Earlier this month we told how easyJet and TUI had both axed popular kids’ meal choices from in-flight menus making feeding kids on flights far dearer for cash strapped parents.

And last month we reported Costa was charging a whopping 20p extra on some hot drinks sold in NHS hospital cafes compared with high street outlets.

Boffins at Money Saving Expert recommend a number of hacks to help save money on easyJet flights.

Pay to bring a second larger bag on board to help minimise your baggage charges.

Boost your hand luggage allowance by using a carrier bag or better still wear your luggage.

Be ready to pounce when easyJet launches its seats to help buy tickets when the demand is lower so you can secure flights tickets for less.

Dodge expensive easyJet extras such as car hire, hotels, and travel insurance by checking prices independently.

And avoid sky-high food and drink prices charged by the budget behemoth by packing a mile-high picnic instead.

Even prices in the terminal after check in are normally cheaper.

For example, an easyJet meal deal (sandwich, soft drink, and snack) starts at £8.50.

Even at inflated airport prices, a Boots meal deal is around £5.

Checkers at the group also told punters not to assume easyJet is cheapest and instead advised them to always compare against alternatives.

How to get free cofee

Virgin Media O2 customers are cutting back on Greggs freebies including coffee.

But there are plenty of other ways to get a free brew. Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements explains..

Download the Greggs’s app and sign up to its loyalty scheme for the first time to get a free hot drink.

The offer includes tea, coffee and hot chocolate.

You’ll be able to collect loyalty stamps through the app, too, which add up to freebies.

Octopus energy customers can also get a complimentary hot drink every week at Greggs by signing up to the Octoplus section on the power provider’s app.

Pop into Ikea during the week to get a free cup of tea or filter coffee with the store’s loyalty card. It costs nothing to sign up to Ikea Family.

You can also bag a free hot drink at Waitrose if you’re a MyWaitrose member when you make a purchase instore.

Get a tea, coffee, cappuccino or latte with the deal.

And the purchase need not cost a lot – buy a piece of fruit or a cheap chocolate bar. Sign up at waitrose.com.

Plus, don’t forget about loyalty schemes at the high street coffee chains.

StarbucksCosta Coffee and Caffe Nero all offer free drinks after a certain number of purchases — usually around nine or ten.
