Celtic hero Kasper Schmeichel at centre of major storm as PFA demand apology from journalist over ‘distasteful’ abuse

A DANISH journalist has sparked major controversy this week after taking aim at Kasper Schmeichel in the aftermath of Denmark’s Nations League defeat to Portugal.

The Celtic goalie, 38, kept a clean sheet in Denmark and saved a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo in the second leg in Lisbon but failed to prevent his side from crashing out in the quarter-final following a 5-3 aggregate defeat after extra-time.

The Denmark captain has been his nation’s No.1 for a number of years but many now believe the veteran’s time playing with the national team should be up.

He’s now found himself caught up in a wild row over his performances back in his homeland.

The Danish PFA have decided to step in and get involved after he was mercilessly targeted with digs regarding his weight in a major publication after the second leg.

The journalist who wrote the article even shockingly compared the goalie to a child with polio.

Schmeichel was hailed by many fans for his brave effort in Portugal after he refused to make way despite suffering a nasty injury during the game.

He was spotted in a sling at full-time and the injury could source him out on the sidelines fora number of weeks, according to reports in Denmark.

Blasting the article published by Ekstra Bladet, PFA chief Michael Sahl Hansen said: “It is way over the line. Hopefully, the journalist is undergoing some serious soul-searching.

“The way of writing about another person is completely wrong. And we in the Players’ Association have to say that clearly and distinctly.”

He added: “(It’s) completely distasteful to try to denigrate a player in that way, by drawing parallels to a deeply serious illness and by fat-shaming.

“Anders Olsen’s article is a flawed, flat and sad example of the need for this particular initiative. The article is under all criticism and could easily make him a strong candidate for the role of clown in an upcoming campaign film for the initiative.

“We must have room to discuss and debate in Danish football. And it is of course entirely appropriate to have professional opinions and analyses about the game and performances.

“But it must be done in a proper way, where one does not descend to such a low level and engage in direct personal attacks as here. And here the media (also) have a great responsibility not to incite a hateful or borderline tone.

“I believe that Anders Olsen was not up to the task, that he must have gotten carried away in a really angry tone, and that in my world he owes an apology.”

The newspaper’s editor-in-chief refused to apologise for the article and says he “stands by” his writer who published the piece.

Editor Knud Brix said: “I agree that there may be some who are offended by this but our writer has chosen to use these words. I stand by that, and I think it is within the bounds of what an article should be.”
