Cruise passenger divides opinion with ‘thank you’ gift to staff viewed by some as ‘degrading’ – what do YOU think?

A CRUISE passenger sparked a heated debate with his thank you gift to staff with many bashing the gesture as “demeaning for the crew.”

John Heald, Carnival Cruise Lines’ Brand Ambassador, asked his followers on Facebook how they felt about one passenger spelling out “thank you” with money on the bed for staff to find as a tip.

He shared a photo of money laid out on a bed reading, “Thanks Ketut.”

Heald created a Facebook poll, containing the voting option: “Please tell people to stop spreading money out on the bed spelling thank to the cabin cleaners. They may think it’s cool but it’s demeaning for the crew.”

While only the 4% of voters selected this option, most people in the comments agreed with the sentiment.

One Facebook user called the gesture “pretty self-serving”, saying that the person who took and posted the picture simply “wants the accolades for leaving a tip.”

She added: “Just hand them the money with a handshake and a thank you rather than this display.”

Another person wrote: “I like putting it in an envelope with a thank you note, just seems classier,” adding that in this way, the cruise ship attendant does not have to “bend all over to collect the money.”

But while some expressed distaste at the gesture, others took to defend the passenger’s creative idea.

In the poll, 30% of people voted that they “have no problem with people doing that. Let them do what they want. It’s just nice to give the crew an extra tip.”

One person wrote: “We have tipped this way before. I see nothing wrong with it other than it being creative.”

Another person even praised the move: “I think this is wonderful! Would have made his day!”

Student, 21, died after he ‘slipped using weight machine at gym and dropped 65kg bar on his head’

A STUDENT died after he slipped and dropped a 65kg bar on his head while using a weight machine at the gym, an inquest heard.

Mohammed Farraj was working out at the University of East Anglia gym when the horror unfolded.

The 21-year-old had been using an aerobic step to perform calf raises while on a piece of weight-lifting equipment called a Smith machine.

CCTV showed Mohammed slipping off the step, which caused a horizontal 65kg bar bell to drop and “force his neck to the ground”.

An inquest heard a safety feature on the machine was a set of adjustable stops, which “should be set to the highest position possible” to stop the weight bar.

But these had been left in the “very lowest position” from a person who had used the machine before Mohammed.

Gym-goer Dr Trey Koev said he had been “less than two metres away” from the aspiring doctor during the tragedy in October last year.

He said he saw the student slip on the plastic aerobic step before the “bar carrying the weight came down” – resulting in a “loud bang”.

Dr Koev explained Mohammed “struggled to his feet very rapidly then tumbled”.

Dr Damian Laba was using the bench press when he heard a bang, “stood up and turned round and saw Mohammed collapsing on the floor”.

The consultant anaesthetist at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital said he “saw blood coming out of (Mohammed’s) nose and mouth”.

Norfolk assistant coroner Johanna Thompson ruled Mohammed’s death as an accident.

She said that “safety stops on the equipment hadn’t been appropriately adjusted prior to” him performing his calf raise exercises.

The coroner added: “He used a step aerobic block to stand on. In doing so he slipped, causing the weight he had been lifting to fall onto him.

“This resulted in him sustaining a fatal head injury.”

Benjamin Price, head of sports operations at UEA Sportspark, told the court a warning is now in place about the stops on the weight machine following Mohammed’s death.

In a tribute, the student’s dad Hashim Farraj told the inquest how his son “loved life” and was training for an Ironman event.

He said he grew up as part of a boxing club and “took his fitness and his health very seriously”.

I had one of my testicles removed within a week of finding lump, but I consider myself lucky

A MAN has told how he was diagnosed with testicular cancer after his self-checking led to the discovery of a lump.

Stephen Spillane from Co Cork said he was very lucky to get an early diagnosis and urges every man to do the same.

He first noticed a lump on his right testicle in August 2020 during the pandemic and decided to get checked.

His partner, a nurse, urged him to see a doctor immediately and his diagnosis was confirmed quickly.

He said: “I have a vivid memory of this. The doctor who said ‘yeah that is a cancerous lump,’ and I got very upset.

“I could tell he wanted to put a hand out as a reassuring thing to do but he couldn’t due to Covid.”

As a result of self-checking, Stephen went through the system quickly, which included an ultrasound, consultation, and surgery to have his testicle removed within a week.

He also did not need chemotherapy and considers himself lucky, as not everyone is so fortunate.

He added: “I didn’t have to go through chemo or anything like that, and not everyone is that lucky.

“One of the things that struck home for me was the man opposite me in hospital, only 16, going through this.

“Whatever happens to me I can deal with, but at that age it is ‘wow’, how do you deal with it? It has a major impact on body image and everything else.”

Now 39 and in remission, Stephen is happy to see his family and friends checking themselves more often after his diagnosis.

A new survey by Movember showed that 62 per cent of men weren’t aware that testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15-40.

And one in five men never check their testicles at all.

Almost half of men, 46 per cent, admitted they wouldn’t go to the doctor out of embarrassment and 22 per cent would wait until the issue became serious.

HOW TO CHECK FOR TESTICULAR CANCER

  • Check after a warm shower: The scrotum will be relaxed, making it easier to feel any changes
  • Examine each testicle: Hold each testicle with both hands and roll it between your thumb and fingers
  • Look for lumps or swelling: look for any hard lumps, bumps or swelling on the testicles or in the scrotum
  • Feel for changes in size or shape: Notice if one testicle feels larger or firmer than the other or if they’re tender
  • Check the epididymis: This is the tube-like structure behind each testicle that should feel smooth and painless

Movember is now encouraging men to “Know Thy Nuts” during Testicular Cancer Awareness Month, urging them to check so they can act quickly if something happens.

Professor Simon Rice from Movember said that testicular cancer is highly treatable when caught early, making self-checks an essential habit.

‘Get to know your nuts’

He said: “Testicular Cancer Awareness Month is about taking control of your health and the simplest action that young men can take is to get to know their nuts.

“That way, if they notice any changes over time, they can get it checked by a doctor. When caught early, testicular cancer is highly treatable.”

Men are encouraged to take a few minutes this month to check their testicles and remind others to do the same.
