‘This is a straight problem’ – GAA ref blasts ‘culture of silence’ after Irish sports stars snub TV doc on gay players

GAA referee David Gough has told how he was snubbed by Irish sports stars for his documentary about what it is like to be a gay male player and raged: There’s a culture of silence.

David came out publicly in 2015 in the run-up to the marriage equality referendum.

A number of elite sports stars snubbed David for the show

Tonight he hosted a new documentary on TG4, Misneach: Bród sa Spórt, about diversity and inclusion in sport.

While planning the show, the referee reached out to members of Ireland’s sports community to speak about what dressing rooms would be like for gay players, and other issues they may face. But none agreed to participate in the show.

He told the Irish Sun: “The biggest shock and disappointment for me was we created a list of straight men in elite sport in Ireland that we could potentially talk to.

“And I’m talking international rugby players, international Olympians that are Irish, the elite of the elite of GAA football and hurling, soccer players, boxers, equestrianism.

“And it was either, ‘Yeah, I’d love to be involved, I’ll get back to you’. Or there was just silence. And then the people that said they would love to be involved and didn’t get back. And when you kept contacting, kept contacting, they didn’t come back at all.

“And I’m not going to name names, but I am talking the most high profile of high profile people within the GAA, within Irish rugby, within the FAI and within athletics in Ireland.

“And nobody would speak to us about elite athletes and the lack of LGBT elite athletes in the country. So it clearly made it out in no uncertain terms.”

He added: “This is not a gay problem. This is a straight problem. And it is their silence and their culture of silence that exists, that stops us from coming out because they have not created or shown us they have created an environment that is safe enough for us to exist as an out LGBT elite athlete.

“And that was the most shocking thing. The culture of silence that nobody, not one elite player came back to us.”

In women’s sport, he found that those he interviewed for the documentary indicated it is easier for women to be openly gay.

Both Valerie Mulcahy of Cork GAA and Aisling Maher of Dublin spoke in the show about their experiences.

Gough said: “It is prevalent in women’s sport and has been from the early 70s in world sport as much as Irish sport.

“And we can talk about Irish sport and the number of LGBT female athletes that we have, and we have them in camogie, ladies football. We have them in soccer. We have them in boxing. We have them in rugby.

“You look at world sports and people will be able to name a number of out lesbian athletes and we could talk all day about them.

“But then we look at men’s sport and we look at Ireland and people will probably know Dónal Og Cusack. They might know me and they might know one more, maybe Jack Woolley. And then they’re going to struggle.”

Bród sa Spórt is available on the TG4 Player tonight at 9:30pm.
