Former Arsenal star blasts Celtic ace Kasper Schmeichel and says ‘it’s time to change’ legendary keeper

FORMER Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner wants Denmark to give blunder keeper Kasper Schmeichel the axe for good.

The Celtic veteran came in for flak for the goals he shipped in the Danes’ 5-2 Nations League defeat in Portugal last Sunday.

Schmeichel injured his shoulder in the clash and is set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

Bendtner, who won 81 caps, reckons it’s time for the 38-year-old to make way for emerging No 1s.

He said: “My question mark for the Danish team is around the goalkeeper.

“Kasper is 38 now – I like him a lot, but he cost us a lot of goals in Portugal.

“He has grown bigger.

“I admire the man a great deal, but when he is 38 in such an important position and you have two Premier League keepers behind you, it’s time for the coach Brian Riemer to change it.

“I would expect Mads Hermansen to play in our friendlies in June to see how he copes with it.

“And once Leicester get relegated, I’d imagine half of the Premier League will try to sign him.”

Bendtner’s comment about Schmeichel’s weight was one of criticisms raised against the former Leicester man in a highly controversial column back home.

Ekstra Bladet writer Anders Olsen described Schemichel as ‘plump’ and shockingly compared his punching to ‘like that of a polio child‘ in his article titled ‘Farewell, Kasper Schmeichel‘.

The piece caused a major row in Denmark and the Danish PFA demanded an apology from the journalist for the comments which they branded ‘way over the line’ and ‘completely wrong’.

But Ekstra Bladet editor Knud Brix hit back: “I agree that there may be some who are offended by this but our writer has chosen to use these words.

“I stand by that, and I think it is within the bounds of what an article should be.”
