Popular seaside town known as ‘the jewel of Wales’ unveils plan for £4million revamp of much-loved beachfront attraction

THE ‘Jewel of Wales’ is about to get even shinier – thanks to a multi-million pound makeover of the town’s famous Grand Pavilion.

Porthcawl’s much-loved art deco theatre, which has been a mainstay of its seafront for more than 90 years, is about to undergo a huge redevelopment.

Home of Gavin and Stacey stars Rob Brydon and Ruth Jones, the South Wales town – which is also located 40 minutes from Barry Island, where the show is set – is a popular tourist destination.

Porthcawl is about to get £20million pumped into a complete redevelopment of its much-loved seafront area, including a number of new attractions being built and a £4million makeover of the historic Grand Pavillion theatre.

The building’s original domed roof will see a “sensitive restoration”, with the original marine-styled weather vane reinstated and modern insulation added.

Plans will also see new extensions added, including a glazed rooftop pavilion with views of the Bristol channel.

The pavilion’s theatre, which closed in February 2024 for the construction work, will be re-opened with enhanced facilities, giving the building a new lease of life.

It is set to house a new studio theatre, bar, and “changing places” facility.

Renders shared by Awen Cultural Trust show the planned extension, including the rooftop pavilion.

A passenger lift, auditorium, gallery, toilet facilities, and supporting back-of-house areas will also be developed.

Porthcawl native Rob Brydon is among the big names who have sold out The Grand Pavilion – with his fellow Gavin and Stacey stars Steffan Rhodri and Robert Wilfort performing there early in their careers.

Eddie Izzard, Elkie Brooks, Cerys Matthews, and Katherine Jenkins have also headlined the hotspot, while Sir Tom Jones gave one of his first performances there in 1963.

The venue is praised for its seafront location and panoramic views of the Heritage Coast.

And it has been described as a “much-loved creative space for audiences, young talent and visitors alike, to engage with arts, culture and heritage”.

“I’ve had some great times in Porthcawl Pavilion,” one five star reviewer wrote online.

“From raves on Saturday nights in my teens to Christmas Pantomime with our children then our grandchildren.

“Great cafe bar for a catch up with friends and when the sun shines, sit outside and people watch on the prom.”

Another visitor praised the “amazing sound quality” within the domed theatre.

As well as the pavilion boost, Porthcawl will see a variety of new attractions added to the seafront area.

A skate park, pump track, and mini golf course, as well as splash parks and play areas will all feature.

Woodland attractions with treetop walks and climbing walls will also be added as part of the plans.

The plans are part of Porthcawl’s wider redevelopment plans set to include the addition of shops and restaurants to the sea front area[/caption]

Restaurants, shops, and cafes are set to line the town’s promenade.

Seasonal events such as fairgrounds and local fairs are set to take place during peak tourist times.

The Porthcawl area boasts seven sandy beaches, six of which allow swimmers.

There is also a wide variety of affordable pubs to visit in the area, including the Jolly Sailor, which first became a licensed brew house in 1818.

Seafront Beach, also known as The Town Beach, is the closest to the Grand Pavilion.

Sandy Bay, also known as Coney Beach, is located just off the promenade, just a 10 minute walk away.

Watersports are also a popular attraction for tourists, with local businesses offering surfing and kite boarding excursions.

Work is set to begin on the Grand Pavilion redevelopment project in May, with the new and improved space officially opening in spring 2027.

Captaincy options for Gameweek 29: Has Erling Haaland’s time come again?

DREAM TEAM managers must remember to select their captain for Gameweek 29 before Saturday’s 10:45am deadline.

Mohamed Salah (£8m) has been the most popular skipper for months on end but his reign may be at an end.

Liverpool’s top scorer has just one fixture this coming Gameweek, the small matter of Wednesday night’s Merseyside derby at Anfield.

The Egyptian superstar may well post another double-digit haul – he’s registered 54 goal involvements this season for crying out loud – but he doesn’t appear to be among the leading candidates on paper.

Logically, the best captain is more likely to come from one of the seven teams set to pull double duty.

And so the question must be asked: has Erling Haaland’s (£7.8m) time come again?

Manchester City travel to Bournemouth this weekend in the FA Cup quarter-finals before welcoming Leicester to the Etihad in the Premier League in midweek.

29 goals and counting[/caption]

The Cherries are not to be underestimated but the big Norwegian No9 will be licking his lips at the prospect of taking on the Foxes on current form.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side have lost seven games in a row and haven’t scored a league goal since Janaury.

The chances of Haaland adding to his season tally of 29 goals at some point this coming Gameweek are relatively high.

Alternatively, might there be a fantastic captain lurking in Crystal Palace’s ranks?

Daniel Munoz (£5.4m) averages seven points-per-game this season and so it would be reasonable to expect a healthy return from him with the Eagles due to face Fulham and Southampton.

The Colombian wing-back has scored five goals, provided six assists, and contributed to 12 clean sheets.

Wednesday’s trip to St Mary’s Stadium represents a mouthwatering mismatch as Saints have mustered just four points on home soil since their return to the top flight.

While that’s all valid, many gaffers will be reluctant to captain a defender, even one as good as Munoz.

Much of the same logic applies to Palace’s attack-minded assets.

Eberechi Eze (£4.5m) averages 6.8 points-per-game while only Bruno Fernandes (£6.7m) has earned more points from his last three outings than Ismaila Sarr (£3.7m).

Jean-Philippe Mateta (£4.5m) is expected to return from injury in Gameweek 29.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa have the luxury of a cup quarter-final against lower league opposition as they travel to Preston on Sunday, with a league game against Brighton to follow.

Some Dream Team bosses will be tempted to stick the armband on Morgan Rogers (£3.9m), Marco Asensio (£4.1m) or Ollie Watkins (£5.2m) – assuming the latter is passed fit – but predicting minutes isn’t all that easy where the Villains are concerned.

Mentions too for Justin Kluivert (£4m), Antoine Semenyo (£4.2m) and Evanilson (£4.2m) as it wouldn’t be all that surprising if Bournemouth landed a few blows on Man City before overwhelming Ipswich.

In conclusion, Haaland is seemingly the most logical captain among the premium options but there are several tempting alternatives this Gameweek.

Who is Roy Keane’s son Aidan?

ROY Keane is a former Man Utd and Ireland midfield legend, who currently works as a no-nonsense football pundit.

Keano is also a family man — here’s everything we know about his son Aidan.

Who is Roy Keane’s son Aidan?

Roy Keane has been married to Theresa for over 20 years — they tied the knot back in 1997.

The pair met in 1992, when the midfielder was playing for Nottingham Forest under Brian Clough.

Speaking of how they got together, Roy said: “I spotted a beautiful girl in a club in town. Her name was Theresa Doyle but she blanked me.

“She was in a steady relationship and didn’t seem at all impressed by Roy Keane, the great footballer. In fact, I think my reputation was as a downer for all kinds of reasons.

“From time to time we ran into each other around Nottingham. I knew some of her friends, who told me Theresa was a dentist’s assistant.

“Eventually, after her relationship broke up, she relented and we went out together. I was in love.”

Roy and Theresa share five children together, four daughters and a son – Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah and Alanna.

Aidan prefers to keep his personal information out of the public domain, but his dad has previously mentioned him in a number of interviews.

Back in 2013, Roy told Today FM that Aidan supports Arsenal, before adding: “Hopefully when he grows up and gets a bit of sense, that will change.”

The former midfielder has got his son’s name tattooed on his right arm — along with the names of his four other children.

Roy said: “The wife did ask me why didn’t I get hers.

“I said, ‘They’ll always be my kids but you won’t necessarily always be my wife,’ which she wasn’t too pleased about.”

When Roy retired from playing football in 2006, before going into management, he initially planned on spending more time with his family.

He wrote in his autobiography: “My plan when I first stopped was, we’re going to go on some family trips, we’re going to be like the Waltons.

“We’re all going to spend time together, go walk in the park and after a month or two they didn’t have the same plan as me so I think they were kind of missing me going to work.

“I got offered the job at Sunderland and I was away on a family holiday and my family were looking at me… not saying it directly but going we kind of enjoy your company but not too much of it so when the job came back up they were saying you should go for it.”

Aidan also plays football, apparently just like his dad, according to the man himself.

In an undated archive interview, which was posted on Instagram in April 2023, Roy said: My young fella plays soccer now, he’s 17.

“I think he plays like I do — he’s not very good but he runs around a lot.”

Not everyone sees the same colours in this mind-bending illusion – are YOU looking at a red, white and blue flag?

THIS mind-boggling illusion used to demonstrate what people with colourblindness can see has blown the minds of social media users.

All you have to do is stare at the middle of the green, yellow, and black version of the Union Jack flag.

The best results to get the traditional flag is to do the video-version of the illusion[/caption]

This will then disappear and you may see the traditional red, white, and blue flag.

The video was made in 1985 for the BBC but has since resurfaced after being posted online by BBC Archive.

Stare at the dot in the centre of the flag and then when the screen goes blank, you may see the right colours of the flag.

One social media user wrote on X: “Brilliant. It definitely works, I was able to see the Union flag!”

“That Union Jack trick still freaks me out to this day!” another said.

“I saw the Union Jack in its true colours. Unbelievable!” a third added.

After carrying out the trick, the narrator explained how it works.

It’s all down to the three receptor theory about the human retina which contains three types of colour receptors known as cone cells which each have different absorption spectra – red, green, and blue.

So, when looking at the green part of the illusion, it is the green and blue cones that get fatigued and fail to respond properly when the white screen flashes up.

But the red cones that were not used in the illusion were not fatigued and so worked normally meaning you see red when the blank screen pops up.

At the same time, the yellow parts of the illusion activate and tire out your red and green cones leaving just the blue working normally which then turns what was yellow, blue, when you look at a blank screen.

This is similar to what colourblind people experience as the may lack cones sensitive to one of these three colours meaning they end up seeing a different colour.

The narrator explained: “We can never know the actual colours they experience, but can get an idea of the range of sensations because we know which colours look identical to them”.

There are four different kinds of colour blindness with the condition affecting one in 12 men and one in 200 women.

‘We need more people like him’ – Shop worker saves elderly man’s life after finding him lying on road in ‘freezing cold’

A SHOP worker has been hailed as a “lifesaver” after stopping to check on an elderly man he spotted lying on the ground in the “freezing cold”.

A member of staff at an Asda in Coleraine, Co Derry was making his was home from work in the early hours of Saturday morning when he came across a man lying on the ground outside.

David Sharkey, who works as the Night Shift Leader at the supermarket, was only a few minutes from home when he saw a figure on the side of the road.

Trusting his gut instinct, he knew something wasn’t right and stopped his car.

Going back to where he had seen a figure, David left his car to investigate what was happening.

It was here that he came across an elderly man who had fallen.

The man, who was aged in his 80s, had fallen outside hours before but couldn’t manage to get up himself.

Once David had got him in the car, he made sure the heat was on to warm the man up after being outside for so long.

He began driving around the area hoping to find his home, but the man was disoriented and couldn’t figure out where he was.

David, not wanting to take a chance, headed straight to A&E.

The man was looked after at hospital and upon returning to work, David was told his daughter had been looking for him to say thank you.

‘LIFESAVER’

The man’s daughter told Belfast Live: “David was a lifesaver. God knows where my dad would’ve ended up if David wasn’t there.

“It was a freezing morning and my dad’s nearly 90!”

“I work night shifts too and when I’m heading home, my only thought is getting straight into bed.

“The fact that David took the time to stop, check on my dad and help him the way he did, it means everything to us.

“He was an absolute star.”

REACHING OUT

Staff at the hospital had noticed that David was wearing an Asda uniform, which led the man’s daughter to call the store looking for him.

The two ended up speaking for about an hour, with David’s main concern being to make sure the man was alright.

The man has returned home since the incident and is doing well.

David has since called a few times to check in.

The daughter said: “Thankfully, my dad is out of hospital now and back home, safe and sound. David has rung me a few more times to see how my dad is.

“We truly cannot thank David enough and we need more people like him in the community!”
