BRITAIN’s busiest motorway has ground to a halt after a car suddenly burst into flames, sparking hour-long delays and six-mile queues.
The fire broke out on the M25 in Surrey, causing the motorway to close anti-clockwise between junction J9 (Leatherhead) and J8 (Reigate).
Drivers initially faced delays of nearly an hour.
All lanes have since reopened – but motorists have been warned to still brace for delays of half an hour.
Queues are also reportedly winding back six miles from the accident.
In a statement posted to X, National Highways said: “This incident is now clear, and all lanes have re-opened on the #M25 anti-clockwise in #Surrey between J9 (#Leatherhead) and J8 (#Reigate).
“A 30-minute delay remains in the area but should now start to ease.
“Thanks for your patience this afternoon.”

A HIT ITV quiz show has been renewed for a new series – two years after the last episodes were recorded.
The channel has officially green lit another instalment of Beat the Chasers.

The hit game show last aired in January after its sixth series was kept on the shelf for two yearsRex
Debuting on ITV1 in 2020, the spin-off of The Chase instantly became a hit with fans.
But after disappearing from screens, the show has been renewed for a seventh series.
The news comes after the sixth series was kept on the shelf for two whole years.
It was finally aired in January with host Bradley Walsh at the helm as well as the six chasers.
Beat the Chasers sees players have to answer a number of multiple choice questions to build up their cash-pot and eventually take on the group.
Each Chaser will then offer time and money depending on the contestant’s ability.
Their choice results in a nail-biting head-to-head race against the clock.
Back in 2021, Robyn Free appeared on the show and won an incredible £40,000 but died shortly afterwards from cancer.
She was later left upset when she learnt that host Bradley Walsh had accused her of ‘scamming’ the show when she leapt up after her win.
In upsetting scenes, which first aired four years ago, Bradley looked on in pretend shock as she walked off stage after struggling at the start.
Then, turning to the empty chair he said, jokingly: “She completely scammed us all.”
Robyn passed away in May 2022 after deciding to forego treatment and chemotherapy on her lungs.
The Chase's best moments
The Chase has been entertaining ITV viewers for years, here are some of the show's most memorable moments...
Bradley Walsh can’t stop laughing
Every time host Bradley Walsh erupts into fits of laughter on The Chase it makes for pretty entertaining TV. One particularly memorable occasion was when he was asking the question ‘The title of which Elvis Presley song was engraved of the inside of Freddie Star’s coffin?” As usual the contestant was given four multiple choices but Bradley could get through reading them out before bursting into hysterics. Seeming the idea of the song being option ‘B: Way Down’ was too much for the presenter to handle.
The Double Trouble special
To celebrate 15 years of The Chase on screens, ITV launched a special ‘double trouble’ episode where contestants faced off against not one but two of the show’s beloved Chasers. And despite the odds, the contestants managed to go home with some cash!
The contestants with famous names
Eagle-eyed ITV fans are always quick to spot interesting and sometimes hidden details on the quiz show – but there have been a few times where the names of some contestants have been overtly obvious. For example, one 2017 episode of the quiz show saw Bradley welcome four contestants who were named after Friends characters Ross, Rachel, Phoebe and Joey. Another group of contestants with named from The Simpsons were also grouped together in another episode, much to viewers’ amusement.
The Beast’s anger gets the best of him
During an episode from the 2024 season, Mark Labbett let out his inner beast as he exploded in a fit of anger. Close to losing the competition in the Final Chase, Mark then made a silly mistake and incorrectly answered the question, “Rabbit was a 1980 hit for which Cockney duo?” “Oh, you idiot!” he yelled at himself while slamming the table in front of him. With seconds left on the clock, the Chaser then admitted defeat, moaning “I don’t deserve to win.”
