GALWAY UNITED has led the tributes following the sad death of John Herrick.
The former Republic of Ireland international has passed away at the age of 78.

He won league and cup honours with Cork Hibernians and went on to play 97 times for Galway Rovers while he also managed the club twice.
It was during his time at the helm of Rovers that the club got to the 1980 League Cup final.
In an emotional tribute, Galway United praised him as one of the “most inspirational leaders and finest ever footballers”.
United said: “John’s play was fiery, aggressive, determined and an inspiration to all.
“That a man of his stature showed such power and resolve set the benchmark for colleagues and charmed local supporters.
“John settled in Galway with his wife Pat to raise their family.
“It could truthfully be said about John that he epitomised the Gaeilge phrase, b’fhear é nach ndearna dhá leath dhá dhícheall ariamh.
“He was a man who never spared himself.
“He supported and counselled many in a quiet discreet fashion. His pride and love for his family was central to his very being.
“In his craftmanship as a sign-writer, in his beautiful and accomplished paintings and in his study and love of Gaeilge John showed that he was much more than an ex-international footballer.
“He lived life to the full and connected to the core of Galway life .
“We send our deepest condolences to his wife Pat and sons Mark and Paul and to all the Herrick family.”
Herrick’s son Mark played for Cork City, with the Leesiders joining tributes to his dad.
The club said: “Everyone at Cork City FC is saddened to learn of the passing of John Herrick.
“John was a former Cork Hibernians player, and father of former City player, Mark Herrick.
“Our thoughts are with the Herrick family at this time. May John rest in peace.”
And the League of Ireland official social media account said: “We are saddened to hear the passing of John Herrick, a League of Ireland legend who counts great careers at Galway United, Shamrock Rovers and Cork Hibernians amongst his illustrious CV.
“Capped by the Republic of Ireland, John won the LOI with Cork in 1971, and the Men’s FAI Cup in 1972 and will be greatly missed by all in the League.”
