Huge new monument at iconic London landmark is unveiled by BBC star

AN ENORMOUS “beating heart” has appeared in Trafalgar Square – powered by human connections.

The installation, called the Connected Heartbeat measures nearly four by four metres and glows in real time as calls, texts and data connections are made on the Vodafone network in the capital.

The best time to see the heart in action could be 7:01 pm, after research of 2,000 adults revealed this to be the busiest time of day when it comes to making calls and sending texts.

Across a whole day, the average adult sends an estimated 28 messages to friends and family – more than 10,000 a year – with Londoners the most active on their phones compared to other parts of the country.

Vodafone unveiled the installation and research to celebrate being named London’s Best Network by NET CHECK for the second year running.

Broadcaster Roman Kemp got the heart glowing as he encouraged passers-by to get the heart ‘beating’ with their own network connections.

He said: “I have lived in the capital for years now and to see my fellow Londoner’s waking up and connecting with others in real time as they go about their day and as a piece of art is really cool.

“I’ve never seen anything like it, and it really shows the power of connection and how integral it is to the fabric of our daily lives.”

The study also found a good old fashioned phone call is only the fourth most-common way to get in touch with friends, with just 10 per cent frequently making them.

Despite this, nearly 13 million voice calls are still made in London on an average day on Vodafone’s network.

It lags behind WhatsApp messages (51 per cent), SMS messages (16 per cent) or social media updates (14 per cent).

Of the UK’s mobile phone users, those in London send the most messages, firing off more nearly 50 a day – and they also make the most phone calls.

While Gen Z are the biggest message fans, with WhatsApp used most frequently, sending five times more than a typical Boomer.

The typical adult is also involved in eight different group chats, with those aged 25-34 in the most, having to keep up with a staggering 12 different groups.

But 66 per cent believe daily digital connection is essential for maintaining relationships with loved ones, according to the survey conducted via OnePoll.com.

And six in 10 believe they would have less contact with their loved ones if it wasn’t for their mobile phones.

Andrea Donà, chief network officer and network director at Vodafone UK, said: “Seeing our network brought to life in such a striking way is fascinating and something that has never been done before.

“We power millions of connections in the city every single day, and what better way to celebrate this than by putting it in shining lights.

“We know staying connected night and day is important, whether that’s for work or being able to check-in with loved ones on-the-go.”

In her viral video, YouTuber Krista Jocelyn showed her 44,000 subscribers what her life looks like on board.

She explained that the “top perk” of her unique job is “getting to save a lot of the money” she makes.

Krista revealed that she and her co-workers have “very limited expenses” while on board.

She told her audience that her cabin, water, electricity, and even her laundry is all free of charge, revealing that the expenses don’t even come out of her pay cheque.

“So we basically have no bills when we’re on board,” the YouTuber explained.

According to the content creator, if you want to spend nothing, you can.

She added that she had only spent $5 (£4) by the sixth day of her excursion while filming.

However, she revealed that her spending can vary from week to week, estimating that on average she spends about $200 (£160) each per cruise.

Most of this goes towards food when she is on land for the day as the crew mess hall provides free meals for staff.

Once a week, Krista visits a specialty restaurant on-board as the canteen rotation can “get a little bit boring”.

With options including Italian, a steakhouse, sushi, a sports bar, and Johnny Rockets, she makes the most of her 20% staff discount.

She estimated that she spends $50 (£40) of her weekly budget on dining out.

Krista revealed that most crew members’ biggest expense is Wi-Fi, which costs $3.99 (£3.15) per hour on board.

Staff members are given two free hours each week but the dancer is able to avail of even more after taken a second job at the Wi-Fi desk.

She can enjoy between 300 to 600 minutes of free Wi-Fi each week.

Pros and cons of going on a cruise ship

Whether you're considering a long holiday, working remotely or even living on board a cruise ship for a few months or years, here are the pros and cons from a former cruise shipper.

Pros

  • Travel the world, learn and experience new cultures
  • Meet new people
  • Don’t have to think or worry about room cleaning, or food

Cons

  • Internet connection can be painfully slow and expensive
  • Limited luggage allowance so have to wear the same clothes on rotation
  • Having no control of where the ship would go next and the possibility of visiting the same ports
  • Having the same onboard entertainment, on-demand movies, and little choice of TV channels
  • No fresh newspapers or new books unless someone adds them to the library
  • Relatively the same food week after week unless major menu changes occur seasonally.
  • Occasional rough seas, bad weather and viral outbreaks while inboard.

Krista also saves significantly with her free gym membership, which she said would often cost her up to $50 (£40) a month at home.

As a performer, she is required to spend at least five hours in the gym each week to maintain her stamina and physique for shows.

She also spends a small amount on snacks and bottled water in the on board tuck shop and on drinks at the “cheap” staff bar.

And on her days off, Krista has been able to explore everywhere from Europe to the Caribbean.

On her current excursion, the locations alternate across tropical islands including Grand Cayman, St. Thomas, San Juan, Bahamas, Jamaica, and Coco Cay.

“Most days of the are spent grabbing lunch off of the ship or visiting a nearby beach,” Krista told her subscribers.

YouTube users shared their thoughts on her lifestyle in the comments section.

“I worked as a safety petty officer on the Pacific Princess, back in 2000-2001,” wrote one viewer.

“The only thing I had to pay for was $8 (£6) per month for healthcare. That was it. I did however buy a lot of rounds in the crew bar.”

“It’s good to save but also have some fun!” said another follower.

“Krista, it’s your hard-earned money, you spend it however you please. You only live once, enjoy every moment of it that you can,” commented a third person.
