IRELAND suffered a heavy loss against Slovenia in the UEFA Women’s Nations League on Tuesday evening.

Carla Ward’s side were soundly beaten 4-0 after a shocking performance at ŠRC Bonifika in Koper.

Slovenia’s forward Lara Prašnikar opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, assisted by Zala Kramžar, and added a second goal in the 28th minute with help from Kaja Korošec.

Kramžar extended Slovenia’s lead in the 34th minute, with Maja Sternad providing the assist.

Ireland conceded a fourth after trailing by three at the break, Kajzba netted the winner in the 81st to put the icing on the cake for the host.

The poor showing came their UEFA Nations League Group B, Group 2 opening win last Friday against Turkey.

Woman, 80s, dies after fatal assault in Co Cork as man, 30s, arrest edand Gardai launch probe

A WOMAN has died after a fatal assault in Co Cork and a man has been arrested.

The woman, aged in her 80s, was pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital today.

The initial incident took place on Sunday, however the elderly woman did not become unwell until today.

She was taken to hospital where she subsequently passed away.

A man, aged in his 30s, has been arrested in connection with her death and Gardai say they are “investigating all of the circumstances”.

In a statement this evening on the “fatal assault incident”, Gardai said: “Gardai in Cork are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in her 80s following an incident at a residential property in Carrigaline, Co. Cork on Sunday, 23rd February 2025.

“While the woman did not initially require medical assistance, she subsequently became unwell. She was transported to Cork University Hospital on Tuesday, 25th February, where she was later pronounced deceased.

“A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the investigation and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in the Southern Region.”

Gardai continued: “The scene at a residence in Carrigaline has been preserved for technical and forensic examination by the local scenes of crime officers.

“The Office of the State Pathologist and local Coroner have been notified. A post-mortem examination will has be arranged for tomorrow.

“A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and a Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has been assigned to provide support and information to the deceased’s family.”
