Michael Lowry ‘will not be allowed masquerade as opposition TD’ says Mary Lou McDonald in stark new Dail chaos warning

MICHAEL Lowry “will not be allowed to masquerade as an opposition TD”, Mary Lou McDonald has declared as she sent a stark warning about further chaos when the Dail returns next week.

The election of Micheal Martin as Taoiseach was derailed last week as opposition parties teamed up to shout down the Dail in a row over four Independent TDs who support the government but want to be in opposition.

Michael Lowry, Barry Heneghan, Gillian Toole and Danny Healy-Rae have all agreed to back the Fianna Fail and Fine Gael coalition but want to act as opposition TDs in the Dail at the same time.

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald today warned that further Dail chaos could be on the cards next week if the Government tries to allow Michael Lowry and Co act as opposition.

She said: “Micheal Lowry will simply not be allowed to masquerade as an opposition TD.

“Micheal Lowry is not an opposition TD. Micheal Lowry is a former Fine Gael minister. Michael Lowry is – as Pearse [Doherty] has said – the star of the Moriarty Tribunal.

“He is an independent TD who enjoys a mandate and I absolutely recognise that but he is the person who led negotiations leading to the Programme for Government.

“Part of that Programme for Government settlement was an agreement on the Ceann Comhairle as you have said and so called super-junior ministers sitting at Cabinet.

“Michael Lowry has made no bones about the fact that he and his associates will back this government through thick and through thin.

“There are no circumstances in which Michael Lowry should be allowed or can be allowed to pretend he is a member of the opposition.”

Following the Dail chaos last week, a Reform Committee was established to come up with a solution for the row.

The Government is due to bring forward their idea for a solution on Thursday, however, reports suggest that Deputy Lowry still wants the opportunity to speak in Leaders’ Questions – a slot where opposition TDs can quiz the Taoiseach.

Mary Lou McDonald warned that this will not fly for opposition parties who she claims stand united on the issue.

She said: “He certainly cannot be part of a charade wherein he questions the Taoiseach in Leaders Questions to hold a Taoiseach that he supports to account.

“That turns logic and democracy on its head. It is a patent absurdity and it is an actual insult to the collective intelligence of the Irish electorate. Nobody buys it.

‘NEED TO THINK AGAIN’

“So not alone do I have concerns around Michael Lowry, I have a deeper concern around Micheal Martin and Simon Harris if they are deluded enough to think that they are actually going to pull this off they need to think again.

“The combined opposition have made our position very, very clear. Coming from different perspectives we are very clear.

“We have a job to do as the opposition and we will not allow Fianna Fail and Fine Gael to encroach on the opposition and to blur the lines to create confusion and to pretend that one of their own TDs would be the one to hold them to account.”

Hero World War Two pigeon’s bravery medal set to sell for huge sum at auction

A MEDAL awarded to a hero pigeon in World War Two is set to sell for £10,000 at auction.

Tommy was supposed to be racing from Dorset to Cumbria in 1942 when a storm blew him into Nazi-occupied Holland.

A postman found him exhausted and gave him to pigeon fancier and Resistance member Dick Dryver.

He identified Tommy as British from a leg ring, nursed him to fitnesses and released him with a secret message.

The Germans had become aware pigeons were being used this way, and Tommy was shot through the wing by a sniper.

But he still completed the 400-mile flight back to Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria — six weeks after he started the race in Christchurch.

Owner William Brockbank spotted the words: “God bless Queen Wilhelmina and long live Winston Churchill.”

Thinking there might be more to it, he gave it to police who passed it to intelligence services.

They found information that led to the RAF bombing a German weapons site.

Tommy was presented the PDSA Dickin Medal, the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross, at the Dutch embassy in 1946 and became a local celeb.

The medal will be sold in Carlisle on Friday.

Auctioneer Paul Laidlaw said: “Tommy has a great story.”

‘White lie’ party for 100 drunk teens ‘hosted by ex-teacher of the year Elizabeth Hill-Brodigan’ as past bashes exposed

THE principal accused of hosting a blow-out party for 100 rowdy teens was known for throwing monthly bashes at her home, a bombshell arrest warrant reveals.

Disgraced Florida educator Elizabeth Hill-Brodigan and fellow teacher Karly Anderson were arrested after cops found drunken teens throwing up and screaming curse words on the principal’s front lawn.

On January 19, cops found the Roosevelt Elementary School educators at the party held outside Hill-Brodigan’s home in Cocoa Beach, about an hour east of Orlando, an affidavit seen by Florida Today alleges.

Cocoa Beach police were called to the house by angry neighbors who reported hearing screams and seeing raucous teens drinking and smoking marijuana.

Cops first called Hill-Brodigan at 8:45 pm and told her about the party. She said she was down the street but would go home to break it up within the hour, the arrest docs say.

However, 10 minutes later, the party was still raging and complaints were still being called in, so officers made their way over to investigate.

On their way, they caught a teen who was driving away from the home. The driver warned cops there was a minor at the party who had been flashing a gun.

Around the same time, they got reports of gunfire and “satanic activity” at a nearby skatepark, but when they arrived, they didn’t find anything.

Another teen was caught driving away from the house, and this time the driver was drunk, cops said.

Officers got to Hill-Brodigan’s home by 11:40 pm, and by then, most of the teens had left.

The party was “white lie” themed, so the remaining attendees were seen wearing white T-shirts with a lie scrawled on the front.

Cops initially saw Hill-Brodigan at the top of her driveway, but after they arrived, she went inside the house and turned off all the lights.

After searching around the property, officers found a drunk teen on the ground, vomiting and shaking.

As they took him to their patrol car for help, Anderson, a third-grade teacher, ran over and started screaming to stop putting the boy “in a machine,” the affidavit alleges.

Anderson, who cops say had slurred words and smelled of alcohol, told the officers she had been hanging around the party.

They had a brief conversation with the teacher and then left.

DISTURBING HISTORY

The day after the party, officers called Anderson, who told them she had gone over to the home after Hill-Brodigan asked her to come have a drink.

Anderson said she didn’t participate in the party and claimed Hill-Brodigan only had one drink that night.

Hill-Brodigan initially agreed to give cops a verbal statement explaining what happened, but she later changed her mind.

On January 21, detectives interviewed several students who were at the party and learned Hill-Brodigan allegedly had a reputation.

Students claimed Hill-Brodigan’s two sons threw parties there on a monthly basis, and his mom appeared to be “OK with what was happening,” the affidavit reads.

Some of them said they were allegedly asked by the principal to get to her home early so they could help fill red and white coolers with alcohol and put them outside.

At one point, the educator tried to stop the bashes, but her son wouldn’t listen, the teens told cops.

Other kids admitted there was marijuana at the function and claimed one teen was wearing a mask and flashing a Beretta gun.

The party had been advertised on Snapchat.

‘REALLY BAD CHOICE’

Community members voiced their shock and anger after hearing news of the educators’ arrest.

Kimberly Bound, whose grandson is a kindergartener at Roosevelt, was nearly speechless over the arrests.

“I’m not really sure how to feel about it,” she told Spectrum News 13.

“I mean, you have to make right decisions, especially with kids. It’s a really bad choice of decisions.”

Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell released a statement addressing the situation.

He said, “We hold our leaders to the highest of standards, and if these allegations are true, it’s a complete failure in leadership and violation of our trust.

“The district is cooperating fully with police as they investigate this matter and will strive to provide families with full transparency.”

Hill-Brodigan has been charged with child neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and holding an open house party.

Anderson was also charged with child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Hill-Brodigan has been placed on leave, and her position is being filled by another administrator.
