Kinahan gangster ‘Fat’ Freddie Thompson’s son jailed for 8 years over terrifying shooting as mum leaves court in tears

GANGSTER ‘Fat’ Freddie Thompson’s son has been jailed for eight years over a terrifying shooting at a car with four people inside.

Brad Dempsey waved at his family while being led away by prison officers as his mother Vicky Dempsey left the courtroom in tears this afternoon.

The case heard how she submitted a letter into the court in which she states she carries a “lot of guilt” over her son’s very difficult childhood.

Dempsey, 24, is the son of Vicky and her ex-partner Freddie Thompson, 44, who is serving a life sentence behind bars for the Kinahan cartel murder of David ‘Daithi’ Douglas on July 1, 2016.

Dempsey, of Stannaway Road in Drimnagh, previously pleaded guilty to the possession of the firearm in suspicious circumstances.

Detective Garda Richie Pender took to the stand as he was taken through the facts of the case by Diarmuid Collins BL.

The court heard that on the day of the shooting, Dempsey got a taxi to a house after his friend had been assaulted earlier.

The taxi man later gave a statement to gardai saying that Dempsey was in an agitated state during the journey and had told someone to get him a “lock” over the phone.

The court was shown CCTV footage in which a gunman – along with two others – emerged from a house before he fired a number of shots at a Ford Galaxy car.

Smoke could be seen rising from the gun as the car fled.

The driver of the car gave a statement to detectives to say he heard a “cracking sound” and initially thought they were being targeted by rocks before noticing bullets were being fired.

He said he was “freaking out” and panicked before he “got the hell out of there”.

The man was “crying” and “shocked” and told officers where he drove the car to when he abandoned it.

CCTV EVIDENCE

Other CCTV on the day showed three men running through a house and over a back wall.

Dempsey was identified after his movements were tracked and he removed the scarf from his face when he met a relative.

The top he was wearing also had marks consistent from hopping over a wall.

Gardai later recovered the clothes Dempsey was wearing at the time of the shooting, after they had been dumped in a bag by a woman.

Dempsey denied his involvement in the shooting when he was arrested in August 2023.

DIFFICULT CHILDHOOD

Padraig Dwyer SC, defending Dempsey, said his client has had a difficult childhood and was exposed to crime at a young age.

He told Judge Martin Nolan that Dempsey had a serious drug problem at the time of the offence.

Dempsey’s mother handed in a letter in which the court heard that she states she carries a lot of “guilt” over her son’s childhood.

He said Dempsey was thankful no one was hurt, and it was a spontaneous response from an earlier incident.

ACCUSED SORRY

Demspey accepted he did wrong and is sorry for his offence, he said.

Mr Dwyer explained his client had been in prison for a “significant period” of his life after he had developed a drug problem from the age 13 and was taking cocaine by the age of 15.

Dempsey, the court heard, wants to turn his life around, leave criminality and work as a personal trainer as well as having a family with his partner.

‘WAKE-UP CALL’

He is engaging with consultations where he has impressed during various appointments in prison.

Mr Dwyer said that this is a “wake-up call” for his client and he is now firmly focussed on leading a crime-free life.

Dempsey has previous convictions for the production of an article in the course of a dispute, violent disorder and drug offences.

Judge Nolan said that Dempsey had been apprehended through very good police work by the gardai.

‘MUST CHANGE HIMSELF’

He said in mitigation, Dempsey’s plea of guilty was valuable and his expression of his remorse.

But he told the accused that “he must change himself” as he stated to the court that he finds it hard to disagree with the Director of Public Prosecution’s opinion that this was on the higher scale of offending.

Judge Nolan jailed him for eight years for the “very serious” offence and backdated it to when Dempsey entered custody.

Liverpool go into the final matchday top of the league and three points ahead of second-placed Barcelona.

Arne Slot‘s side are guaranteed a spot in the last sixteen as they can not drop out of the top eight teams.

The manager has since taken the decision to rest 12 of his star players including goalkeeper Alisson.

The Dutchman will not be taking defenders Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate to Holland.

While midfielders Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai will also miss out.

Forwards Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah will both be at home for the match.

Slot could instead hand opportunities to fringe players to prove themselves worthy of more game time.

It is thought that Caoimhin Kelleher will return to the goal for Liverpool.

Liverpool will then have a tough trip to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.

This is then followed by the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur next week.

Slot has admitted that those who are not travelling will have the time off and insisted the decision is for the long term.

He said: “If possible, we always prefer to have them off three days before a game, it’s not always possible, but we try.

“I think we are playing, like all the teams in Europe, many, many games and these players are ready. All the players left behind could have played tomorrow.

“But for the long-term, it doesn’t tell us anything about the short-term or Saturday.

“If you look back at our season it’s always been after four, five weeks we gave them the break during the week.

“If there was a moment for them to get some freshness back we’ve always done that.”

Disabled drivers force U-turn on plans to slap them with parking fees after furious backlash

DISABLED drivers have forced a U-turn on plans to slap them with parking fees after a furious backlash.

Bromley Council has binned its controversial proposal to charge Blue Badge holders for parking in council-owned spaces.

It comes amid widespread outrage from residents and pressure from local MPs, who had branded the plans “shameful”.

Tory Councillor Nicholas Bennett, who backed the scheme, admitted the U-turn was down to better-than-expected savings.

He told The Sun: “When this proposal was made last November, the council’s estimated budget gap was over £53m for 2026/27.

“As a result of a number of subsequent savings, we are now able to not proceed with this proposal.”

Mr Bennett had defended the parking fees at a council meeting last year, saying Blue Badge holders already pay for petrol, servicing, and tyres like anyone else, and the £1.10 to £1.60 charge was just a small addition.

Bromley Council documents from November estimated the scheme would generate an additional £50,000 for the town hall.

A final consultation on the proposal was set to take place this year.

Labour MP Liam Conlon – who led the charge against the plan – said: “It was clear that the plan to charge people Blue Badge users would not have raised the revenue Tory Bromley Council claimed but would have forced disabled people into isolation – staying at home instead of working, seeing friends and family or contributing to the local economy by visiting shops on our high street.

“Just last week Councillor Smith replied to my letter and refused to say he was cancelling the plans. Finally he has climbed down. His proposals and subsequent delay before finally u-turning has caused undue stress for disabled residents and sends all the wrong signals to people he is meant to stand up for.”

Sian Pugh, a local mum, played a key role in the U-turn, launching a petition that gained over 4,000 signatures.

Ms Pugh, whose daughter Carys suffers from a debilitating disability, had blasted the proposal as “unfair” and “injustice at its worst.”

Welcoming the U-turn, she said: “Bromley Blue Badge holders will be relieved they will not be expected to pay more than their able-bodied peers, who have the choice of walking or cycling to their destinations for free.”

She also insisted other councils should “take notice” and avoid introducing similar charges.

Some councils across England and Wales already impose charges on Blue Badge holders, creating a confusing patchwork of rules for disabled drivers.

In some areas, Blue Badge holders pay the same parking fees as able-bodied drivers, while others offer discounts or limited free time.

Dorset and Wiltshire Councils provide an extra hour on top of the ticket purchased, while Newcastle City Council offers the first hour free or a grace period – but only if you follow specific payment methods.

Other councils, like Peterborough and Norfolk, expect Blue Badge holders to pay full tariffs in car parks.

The hour-long immersive event is described as “an experience for one audience member at a time”.

Its contents — said to be physically challenging and intense — are a secret with participants asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Even its precise location is not shared, taking place in a disused London office block.

But a source said Eugenie, the younger daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York, was part of the “largest celebrity group yet” when she attended the show last weekend.

They added: “It’s getting busier and busier with A-listers but her royal status makes Eugenie our biggest name this run.”

She was accompanied on the trip by husband Jack Brooksbank.

The plot of You Me Bum Bum Train is also secret and scenes or scenarios change depending on the audience members — or “passengers” — and the guest performers on the night.

The production — created by pals Kate Bond and Morgan Lloyd in 2004 — has achieved cult status due to its mysterious nature.

Other celeb attendees include Madonna, Stephen Fry, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Sir Ian McKellen and Prince Harry.

You Me Bum Bum Train is described as “a magical journey in which people are able to go beyond their everyday lives and have a range of experiences that would not normally be possible within a lifetime”.
