Historic UK city to get huge new £161million revamped train station

ONE of the UK’s oldest train stations is getting a huge, much-needed train station redevelopment.

First announced in 2022, Oxford’s main train station is undergoing a £161million revamp.

The four-platform station is getting a new platform 5 with an additional train track.

Four new trains an hour will connect Cambridge to Oxford station via the new East-West Rail link.

It will be the first time the two cities are connected by a direct train route in 50 years.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has said the new train route will help boost the UK economy by £78million by 2035.

She said: “Oxford and Cambridge offer huge economic potential for our nation’s growth prospects.

“Just 66 miles apart, these cities are home to two of the best universities in the world, two of the most intensive innovation clusters in the world and the area is a hub for globally-renowned science and technology firms in life sciences, manufacturing and AI.

“It has the potential to be Europe’s Silicon Valley. The home of British innovation.”

A huge new entrance building at Oxford station will allow more space with outdoor seating and pathways.

New shops include a Pret-a-Manger, Greggs and M&S Food.

The new railway will be four times the size to allow both walkers and cyclists, and will open later this year.

Additional level crossings and upgrade signalling are all part of the renovation as well.

The £161million project includes £72.7million of funding from the local council, with another £78.6million from the UK government.

Another £10.5million has been contributed by Oxford Local Enterprise Partnership,

Oxford‘s main train station welcomed around 8.7million people a year pre-pandemic.

However, complaints have been raised over the closure of Botley Road, one of the main ways to get to the train station.

Having closed in April 2023, it is expected to stay closed until 2026.

Oxford Station first opened in 1844, making it one of the oldest in the UK and it is also the flagship station of Great Western Railway.

Why the city needs a new train station

The Sun’s Deputy Travel Editor Kara Godfrey grew up just outside Oxford.

MY early childhood was often spent travelling into the city of Oxford to catch a train to London for trips to the theatre.

However, I also often remembered how chaotic is was trying to get to the station from my home town Witney.

The busy Botley Road was always back to back with cars when travelling at peak times or the weekend.

The 20-minute journey could often take double that, or even more.

And the small station was always overcrowded, making it hard to get through especially if running late.

It became so difficult, I ended up travelling to the alternative Oxford Parkway Station, despite it being a bit further out.

The new Oxford station will hopefully make the beautiful city much easier to visit.

Train routes currently operate to both London Paddington and London Marylebone, as well as to Coventry and Birmingham.

There is also a direct train from Oxford to Manchester once an hour.

The UK is also opening a number of brand new train stations.

Cambridge is getting a new £183million train station, with Cambridge South Station opening this year.

And as part of HS2, the new £2billion ‘super station’ will open in Old Oak Common.

This is alongside the new £460million Birmingham’s Curzon Street Station which will be the first of its kind in the UK in 130 years.

Monster couple filmed themselves repeatedly raping girl in one of UK’s ‘most horrific & despicable’ sex abuse cases

Collage of mugshots of a man and a woman.

A “DISGUSTING” couple repeatedly filmed themselves as they raped and sexually abused a child in one the UK’s “most horrific” abuse cases.

Zabien Burns, 34, was jailed for life and will serve a minimum of 16 years after being found guilty of 10 sexual offences.

Bethany Hill was jailed for eight years[/caption]

He was convicted of two counts of rape, four counts of sexual assault, three counts of making indecent images of children and causing the sexual exploitation of a child.

His partner Bethany Hill, 26, previously pleaded guilty to eight sexual offences and was jailed for eight years when they appeared for sentencing at Hull Crown Court on Tuesday.

Hill was convicted of two counts of rape, four counts of sexual assault, arranging the commission of a child sex offence and causing the sexual exploitation of a child.

The pair, both of Hull, East Yorks., were both given a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and will both be on the sex offenders register for life.

Speaking after the sentencing, the child’s mum said when she found out what had happened, she felt “completely numb”.

She added: “It was a huge, horrendous shock, but once it started to sink in, I felt nothing but rage.

“Since that day, the thoughts of what these disgusting and horrible individuals have done has plagued me from the moment I open my eyes until I go to sleep.

“There are no words for the heinous actions of Hill and Burns’, and the impact that it has had, and will continue to have, on our family is immeasurable.

“I am sickened to the core, and the effect this has had can only be described as soul destroying.

“Hill and Burns are vile and cruel. They took my trust and broke it in the most monstrous way by doing something that no person should be capable of.

“I will never forgive you for what you have done.”

Detective Constable Annabel Devall, of Humberside Police, said: “This is one of the most horrific and despicable cases I have ever worked on where a child, one of the most vulnerable people in our society, has been subjected to abominable sexual abuse over a prolonged period.

“Hearing of the nature of these offences is something that will no doubt affect every member of society, and the actions of these individuals are appalling; not only affecting the victim, but also their family.

“This is something the family will never be able to forget, and despite the result here today, it is a trauma they are all going to have to live with for the rest of their lives.

“The offences in this case have been described as disgusting and heinous, and I can only agree, as the victim was purposefully targeted for being too young to understand what was happening to them.”

Why police were called to first Dunnes Stores opening

BETWEEN the weekly food shops and bargain fashion - Dunnes Stores is a staple retailer in Irish households.

But this wasn’t always the case, and when the initial branch of the shop opened its doors in 1944 it caused quite the stir

On March 31 of the year, Ben Dunne opened the first ever Dunnes Stores on St Patrick’s Street in Co Cork

Locals quickly learned of the grand opening and flooded into the store in what the retailer’s archives recall as a “shopping frenzy.”

The bargain clothing on sale inside the new store at “pre-war prices” was one of the factors cited for the buzz.

During the chaos a window was forced in and Gardai were called to the scene.

Cops worked to deal with the eager crowds and keep shoppers calm and safe before they made it into the store for their first Dunnes experience.

Fast forward some 80 years, the business now employs over 18,000 people and although an opening of a Dunnes branch hasn’t caused quite as much stir since the very first one, it has cemented its place as one of the nation’s leading retailers

Dunnes Stores now has 138 stores across Europe:

  • 118 in the Republic of Ireland,
  • 15 in Northern Ireland
  • Five stores in Spain

Man Utd bring in legendary athletics coach to salvage season after Ruben Amorim criticised flops’ work-rate and body fat

MANCHESTER UNITED have brought in one of the world’s leading athletics coaches in a bid to boost their season, according to reports.

Ruben Amorim‘s side have flopped to 12th in the table following a run of dodgy form.

But in an effort to boost the second half of the season, Amorim has brought in legendary track and field coach, Harry Marra.

Marra, 78, was named the World Athletic’s coach of the year in 2016 after helping fellow American, Ashton Eaton to Olympic decathlon gold in 2016, which was a follow-up of a win in 2012.

He has also served as the speed and fitness consultant for the Major League Baseball team San Francisco Giants.

Now, according to The Times, Marra is sharing his expertise with fitness and coaching staff at Carrington after Amorim reportedly had issues with body-fat levels on his stars.

This arrangement sees him in direct contact with Man Utd’s interim performance director, Sam Erith, and is set to last for a few weeks.

New-York-born Marra’s insight will mainly lend itself to speed and endurance training, two things which are vital in Amorim’s high-octane system.

Amorim famously said he wants his players to run like “mad dogs”.

The Athletic claims several stars have considered the use of personal trainers to provide guidance on running given the major demands put on them by Amorim’s style of play.

CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS

Marra’s world-renowned techniques include breaking down movements into mechanisms that follow specific principles.

Under Marra’s tutelage, Eaton twice broke the world decathlon record and became the only man to defend his Olympic crown in the event.

He has also worked with Brianne Theisen, a world and Olympic medalist in the heptathlon, who is also married to Eaton. Marra officiated the couple’s wedding.

Marra also coached Lalu Muhammad Zohri when he became the first Indonesian to win any kind of medal at the World Junior Championships when he took gold in the 100m in 2018.

Speaking about his methods, he told the Santa Barbara Independent: “You have to listen to the athlete.”

Marra later added in an interview with Chasing the Standard on YouTube: “It all starts with the initial movement of the part of the skill, so that if the initial movement is correct, then at least you have a chance to complete the skill correctly.

“So I put a focus on teaching the skills, understanding what the demands of the skills are, and then showing how to start and carry on the runway.”

He has already been seen visiting Old Trafford, having been seen sitting in front of Sir Alex Ferguson while wearing a United tracksuit.

Man Utd often industry-leading practitioners to share their insights to enhance the knowledge of those at the club.

This season the club have hosted several expert-led events covering issues such as medical and injury management, movement mechanics, nutrition and strength training.

Man Utd’s next game is against FCSB in the Europa League.

MAN UTD PLAYER RATINGS: Maguire puts in superb defensive display but Garnacho caught running into blind alleys

MANCHESTER UNITED secured a hard-fought three points against Fulham.

Lisandro Martinez’s deflected strike proved to be the difference in what was the Red Devils’ only shot on target all game.

Harry Maguire impressed but Alejandro Garnacho once again failed to impress in what could have been his Man Utd farewell amid rumours linking him with Napoli and Chelsea.

Here is how SunSport rated the individual performances.

Andre Onana – 7

Good save low down to his left to keep out an Alex Iwobi shot early doors.

Other than that he was barely tested but no glaring errors mean it is a step in the right direction for the Red Devils No1.

Diogo Dalot – 6

Had a difficult time in the first half up against Iwobi who was Fulham‘s main attacking threat.

Switched to the left flank in the second half and supported Garnacho without posing much of a threat.

Matthijs de Ligt – 8

Another strong showing at the back from the Dutchman. Without his support for Dalot, Fulham may have created a goal down United’s right-hand side.

Harry Maguire – 9

A superb defensive display from the England star who has been one of United’s best players since Amorim took charge.

Pulled off a brilliant header at the back post to deny Rodrigo Muniz a certain goal.

Lisandro Martinez – 8

Superb last-ditch tackle to prevent Emile Smith Rowe from shooting as he burst through on goal.

His goal had a big slice of luck as it was deflected past Bernd Leno but credit to him for having the audacity to shoot.

Noussair Mazraoui – 7

Solid at the back and tried to get forward when he could. United looked more balance with him on the left and Dalot on the right, although the pair swapped at half-time.

Manuel Ugarte – 6

Showed some nice touches and was a bit of a menace in the middle – in a positive and negative sense. Kept a close eye on Smith Rowe and allowed him no time on the ball.

Booked for a foul on Adama Traore and was taken off shortly afterwards with an injury.

Bruno Fernandes – 5

Not at his best. Barely saw the ball in the first half and was not very effective when he did get it.

Amad Diallo – 6

Looked bright on the ball and United’s only real outlet going forward.

He worked tirelessly and pressed really well – his hard work paid off when he found the back of the net in stoppage time but his effort was chalked off.

Alejandro Garnacho – 3

Was cautious on the ball and ran into blind alleys too often. Final ball let him down on the rare occasion he did manage to beat a defender.

Rasmus Hojlund – 4

His hold up play is nowhere near good enough for this system or for a club like United.

He was too gung-ho at times and his erratic nature meant linking up with Amad and Garnacho proved difficult.

Hauled off before the hour mark which says it all about his performance.

Subs:

Leny Yoro (for De Ligt, 58mins) – 6

A more assured display given his shaky start to life in the Premier League.

Joshua Zirkzee (for Hojlund, 58mins) – 5

Like Hojlund he had a difficult time holding the ball up but United improved with him on the pitch.

Toby Collyer (for Ugarte, 76mins ) – 6

Solid display again from the youngster who was often in the right position to clear, including one on the line to stop a Joachim Andersen header from going in.

Kobbie Mainoo (for Garnacho, 80mins) – 6

Provided energy in midfield and shored things up alongside Collyer.

A brilliant one-two with Amad set up the winger to score before VAR ruled Amad offside.

Tyrell Malacia (for Mazraoui, 80mins) – 6

Brought on in an unfamiliar right wing-back role but did what was needed to see out the clean sheet.

Coronation Street star looks worlds away from Weatherfield as she teams up with Happy Valley star for new ITV thriller

A FORMER Coronation Street star looks a world away from her former character as she takes on a gritty new role for ITV.

Actress Katherine Kelly played Becky McDonald from 2006 until 2012, but now the star has taken on altogether different role.

Appearing in ITV’s latest thriller series Protection, which is released this spring, sees Katherine team up with actress Siobhan Finneran who is known for her roles in Happy Valley, Alma’s Not Normal, Time and The Stranger.

Katherine has previously held roles in Mr Bates vs The Post Office, The Long Shadow and Netflix’s Criminal: UK.

However she’s well known for her role as Becky in the ITV soap, for which she received multiple awards, including the British Soap Award for Best Actress (2009) and the NTA for Best Serial Drama Performance (2012).

During her six years on the soap, Katherine’s storylines included marrying Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and the introduction of her half-sister Kylie (Paula Lane) and nephew Max.

Now starring in Protection, the new thriller’s cast also features Bad Sisters and Save Me star Barry Ward and Sex Education’s Chaneil Kular.

New thriller Protection is about what happens when the clandestine and morally grey witness protection system breaks down.

The series has been inspired by a real-life witness protection officer who served in the Metropolitan Police for 30 years and has also acted as a series consultant.

The new compelling series has been created by Kris Mrksa, the acclaimed writer of White House Farm and No Escape.

Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (played by Finneran) is a single mum, juggling a difficult divorce and a sick father, when she finds herself at the heart of a security breach within her witness protection unit.

Professionally compromised by a secret affair with a colleague, she is determined to uncover the true source of corruption within the police.

Liz will stop at nothing to redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses and her own family safe.

Even if it means breaking all the rules.

This is the story of a tough, but increasingly isolated and under suspicion police officer, as she is pulled into a dangerous conspiracy where nothing is as it seems.

‘Where’s the Tayto?’ joke fans as Padraig Harrington reveals ‘perfectly timed gift’ of Irish goodies sent to hotel room

PADRAIG HARRINGTON revealed a host of Irish goodies that were delivered to his hotel room – but fans were more focused on what was missing.

The Irishman is staying at the Westin in Bahrain ahead of the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship.

Padraig Harrington revealed a host of goodies sent to his hotel room[/caption]

His arrival came at the end of what he called “two weeks on the road“.

However, the Irish general manager of the hotel sought to make him feel at home by bringing him a care package.

Harrington shared a photo of the collection, which included a Brennan’s batch bread, a Dairy Milk chocolate bar, and Kerrygold butter.

Also included was a framed photo depicting some of the Dubliner’s career highlights.

The 53-year-old said: “Just arrived at The Westin in Bahrain for the @DPWorldTour Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship.

“Perfectly timed gift in the room from the Irish GM, after two weeks on the road.”

In the comments, fans were enamoured by the gesture, but did point to one glaring omission.

One said: “That is service for you. Where are the Cheese & Onion Tayto for a crisp sandwich?”

A second remarked: “Where is the king or tayto to go with that batch”

Mel asked: “Where’s the Tayto ??” while another joked: “All that’s missing is the bottle of ballygowan instead of the French uisce lol”

And Eddie quipped: “That’s great, shame there was no Tayto for a crisp sambo.”

While Harrington is busy in Bahrain, his fellow countryman Rory McIlroy is set to make his first start of the PGA Tour season at this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The Northern Irishman is part of a stacked field that also sees the return of Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth.

World number one Scheffler is returning from hand surgery after an accident on Christmas Day.

The FedEx Cup champion had small glass fragments removed from the palm, which postponed his planned season debut at the AMEX Championship.

While Joran Spieth is returning after wrist surgery, the three-time major winner opted to take time out after missing last year’s FedEx Cup Playoffs to get the long-standing issue operated on.

The popular American has plummeted to 77 in the world golf rankings, and will be keen to make his way into the AON next ten in the FedEx Cup rankings for Signature event exemptions.

Down ace McIlroy played the Dubai Desert Classic earlier this month on the DP World tour.

But he’ll be keen to get off to a good start on Thursday at the famous Monterey Peninsula links venue.

Last year’s AT&T was won by Wyndham Clark after weather hampered the tournament.

The final round was abandoned because of bad weather and safety concerns, with 54-hole leader Clark declared the winner.
