It’s officially ‘rat season’ & they multiply like crazy –  take these 4 steps or end the year with a litter of 1,200

THE cold weather can make you want to hunker down and shelter from the elements.

Unfortunately, this cosy time of year is also prime time for rats, who have the same idea for surviving winter.

Experts warn that now is the time to take preventative action to protect your home from rats (stock image)[/caption]

If you’re looking to protect your home from these pesky rodents, the experts at Bunk Beds have shared the four preventative measures you can take.

“Rats are more likely to enter homes during the winter months as they search for food and warmth,” they explained.

The professionals revealed that rats are “highly skilled at finding their way inside.”

They recommended taking swift action if you notice anything suspicious as “the problem can get worse and it can be an expensive fix” if untreated.

“Rodents can chew electrical wires, cause expensive property damage, and spread diseases that can cause liver and kidney damage, and salmonella,” they explained.

They highlighted the importance of taking preventative action in your home.

For their first step, they advised homeowners to start with securing their garden.

“Rats have an amazing sense of smell and can smell food from over two kilometres away and will travel long distances to find a food source if they need to,” they said.

“For this reason, if you have any food thrown in your bins then you need to make sure they are secured with tight-fitting lids.”

They also suggested storing your bins away from your house if you have the space.

“Rats and other rodents are scavengers and if you can keep your bin away from your house walls, you will reduce the risk of attracting unwanted pests,” they shared.

The experts also recommended using “natural predators” such as cats or owls to keep the rodents away.

“Some dog breeds such as Jack Russell terriers can also protect your home,” they revealed.

And while you likely don’t own an owl, installing an owl box in your garden can help encourage the predators to take up residence and keep the rodent population to a minimum.

And if you don’t want these animals in your gardens, you can use decoy predator scents.

Tips for keeping pests from your garden

  • Plant companion plants such as peppermint to repel rats.
  • Place Garden Netting Pest Barrier, over your flowerbeds.
  • Fill open-top containers with beer and place in soil to repel slugs.
  • Spray plants with Neem Oil, to repel ants, flies, and spiders.
  • Dust your flowerbeds with Diatomaceous Earth.
  • Mix 1 tablespoon dish soap, 10 drops peppermint oil, and 4 cups water and spray on flowerbeds.
  • Place eggshells around your plants to protect from slugs and snails.

“These scents can deter rats as well as a wide range of animals like moles, voles, mice, and squirrels,” they explained.

You can also incorporate natural deterrents into your home, many of which you probably already have.

Using natural-smelling spices or oils is considered to be the next best option after synthetic scents.

“Strong-smelling spices like cayenne pepper or garlic cloves can be sprinkled around the entry points of your home,” the experts said.

“These scents are strong and can burn a rodent’s nose as they are so sensitive to smells.

“You can also wipe any surfaces in your home with vinegar as it removes the food odour that may attract them in the first place.”

Peppermint or cinnamon oil also work but are only a temporary fix, for something more permanent consider planting rodent-repelling plants such as mint, lavender, or marigolds in your garden.

Why is it so important to take action?

The experts highlighted how quickly a rodent infestation can take place.

“Rodents are dirty and carry nasty diseases and the last thing you want is to invite these creatures into your home,” explained Adeel from Bunk Beds.

“Rats and other rodents can also be expensive to get rid of too.

“Traps and baits can cost hundreds of pounds and there is no guarantee that it will get rid of the problem either.

“If you don’t get rid of your rodent problem quickly it can become near impossible to fix, a female rat can have up to 13 babies in a litter and can have anywhere from three to 12 litters in a year.

“Rats can also reach sexual maturity after nine weeks so a population of two rats can exponentially grow to over 1,200 in a year.”

“It’s far better to prevent a rat infestation than to try and remove one.”

And since rodents can quickly spread from one property to another, it’s worth communicating with your neighbours if you spot any potential issues.

I’m a ‘bad mum’ but people are reporting me to welfare for feeding my kids junk – they mostly get fed at school anyway

SHE describes herself as a “bad mum”.

But Whitney has still been left fuming after discovering she’s once again been reported to the authorities – this time for what she’s been feeding her kids.

She shared a look at a more realistic lunch for her son in another TikTok video[/caption]

She took to TikTok to share a video admitting she’s raging about the latest development, which came after she shared a video of the packed lunch she’d made her seven-year-old for school.

In the clip, which was presumed by many to be a joke, she was seen loading a can of fizzy drink, some Kinder Cards, a massive bar of Milkybar chocolate, four Babybel cheeses, some Cheese Strings, two packets of crisps and a sandwich on white bread.

Responding to the backlash, Whitney insisted that only one of her kids takes a packed lunch – the others are fed at school.

“That is why I make the packed lunches that I do,” she said.

The person reporting the ‘welfare’ concern had even rung the kids’ schools, she said, but warned that “everything can be traced back”.

She added that the only reason not all of her kids have school dinner is because one of them doesn’t offer it.

“I understand some people’s reasonings for ringing but you know that you’re just wasting people’s time,” she said.

“It’s just pointless – it’s pointless people ringing people because everything is traced back.

“You’re just wasting people’s time.”

“I look after Adley. I can 100% confirm he brings a brilliant packed lunch,” one person commented on the video.

“Honestly I’m sometimes jealous.

“It’s a very well packed dinner – do people really think as a school we wouldn’t have reported?”

“It’s absolutely crazy!” she responded.

“I try my best always with my babies.

“Just don’t like they’re wasting time for people who need it.”

And in another video, Whitney showed another of her son’s packed lunches – with Ritz crackers, Fridge Raiders chicken bites, some cookies, cucumber, Quavers crisps and loads of fruit.

How to save money on your food shop

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save hundreds of pounds a year:

Odd boxes – plenty of retailers offer slightly misshapen fruit and veg or surplus food at a discounted price.

Lidl sells five kilos of fruit and veg for just £1.50 through its Waste Not scheme while Aldi shoppers can get Too Good to Go bags which contain £10 worth of all kinds of products for £3.30.

Sainsbury’s also sells £2 “Taste Me, Don’t Waste Me” fruit and veg boxes to help shoppers reduced food waste and save cash.

Food waste apps – food waste apps work by helping shops, cafes, restaurants and other businesses shift stock that is due to go out of date and passing it on to members of the public.

Some of the most notable ones include Too Good to Go and Olio.

Too Good to Go’s app is free to sign up to and is used by millions of people across the UK, letting users buy food at a discount.

Olio works similarly, except users can collect both food and other household items for free from neighbours and businesses.

Yellow sticker bargains – yellow sticker bargains, sometimes orange and red in certain supermarkets, are a great way of getting food on the cheap.

But what time to head out to get the best deals varies depending on the retailer. You can see the best times for each supermarket here.

Super cheap bargains – sign up to bargain hunter Facebook groups like Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK where shoppers regularly post hauls they’ve found on the cheap, including food finds.

“Downshift” – you will almost always save money going for a supermarket’s own-brand economy lines rather than premium brands.

The move to lower-tier ranges, also known as “downshifting” and hailed by consumer expert Martin Lewis, could save you hundreds of pounds a year on your food shop.

The only part of the lunch that was somewhat questionable was a wrap that was filled with just butter, but Whitney said it’s only because he doesn’t like ham.

“People have too much time on their hands,” another person commented on the video.

“You’re a great mother.”

“What a joke!” a third slammed.

“Those kids are fed – why can people not see how stupid they look doing that!”

“Can clearly see it’s just a joke,” someone else sighed.

“People need a sense of humour!”

Premier League club announces 23,000-seater new stadium plan to fulfil Champions League ambition

BOURNEMOUTH have announced their plan to build a 23,000-seater stadium to fulfil their Champions League ambitions.

The Cherries have gone from strength to strength since appointing Andoni Iraola as their manager 18 months ago.

Bournemouth lie 7th in the table with 11 wins and five defeats from 23 matches this season.

Iraola’s men blasted five past Nottingham Forest’s mean defence last weekend.

And seven days earlier they secured an impressive 4-1 win away at high-flying Newcastle.

The Cherries have done all this with a severely depleted squad full of injuries.

But fans are starting to dream of a shock push for Champions League football.

And club chiefs are already setting out plans to take Bournemouth to the next level.

American businessman Bill Foley took over the south-coast club in 2022 as part of his Black Knight group’s multi-team ownership strategy.

As well as reversing Bournemouth’s fortunes on the field while landing a top coach in Iraola, Foley and Co are now close to finishing an elite new training ground.

But the biggest change is set to come with a brand new stadium, with plans at an advanced stage to double the capacity of Bournemouth’s current ground.

The Cherries have been playing at the Vitality Stadium, otherwise known as Dean Court, since 1910.

The historic ground packs in over 11,000 fans for each game.

But plans are now afoot to knock it down and build a new stadium over the same space while boosting capacity to over 23,000.

The surge in tickets sold will give Bournemouth a huge financial boost, thereby helping them attract better players and eventually crack the Premier League’s top four.

Foley told Men in Blazers via the Athletic: “We have a waiting list of 15 or 16,000 people that want tickets, so we’re not going to have trouble filling the stadium.

“We’re a little ahead of schedule. I thought we’d be in Europe next year. We may have a chance this year if we can keep going and keep on playing well.

“If we just get lucky on injuries and get these guys healthy the second half of the season, we should be very successful.

“If we’re successful, we will play in Europe. The Champions League? That’s my dream.”

But for those hoping to pick up some last-minute groceries and treats before the long weekend, be aware that opening hours may vary.

Several supermarkets across Ireland have adjusted their hours to accommodate shoppers and staff over the busy weekend.

Many will operate at regular working hours, while others opt to open later than usual.

Here is a full breakdown of the list of the opening hours for Irish stores over the February bank holiday.

DUNNES STORES

Dunnes Stores shoppers are urged to check their local branch for opening times over the bank holiday as stores may open and close at different times.

ALDI

Aldi Ireland bosses confirmed its stores will be open from 8am–10pm as normal on Saturday, February 1, and from 9am–9pm on Sunday, February 2.

And shops will also open between 9am–9pm on Monday, February 3, for the St Brigid’s Day Bank Holiday.

The retailer advised customers to check details of local opening hours on ALDI’s website to avoid disappointment, as some stores’ hours “may vary slightly”.

On Monday, the Aldi in Swords will open from 10am–9pm.

The Laytown shop will operate from 11am–7pm and Dunshaughlin will open from 10am–9pm.

The supermarket giant will resume normal opening hours from 8am as usual on Tuesday, February 4.

M&S IRELAND

Marks and Spencer bosses said the opening hours of stores differ depending on the store.

Shoppers are urged to use their shop locator for specific opening times here.

The supermarket giant has lots of offers in store for the long weekend.

Foodies can pick up an Indian Dine in meal with 1 Main and 1 Side for €10.

Pizza lovers can also opt for a Dine in meal with 1 Pizza and 1 Side for only €8.50.

And for those entertaining, there’s 20 per cent off selected Italian wine.

LIDL

Lidl bosses confirmed the stores are operating normal hours on Saturday.

However, the supermarket will close early on Sunday and Monday of the bank holiday.

A spokesperson for Lidl said: “Lidl Ireland stores will be operating normal opening hours for Saturday the 1st of February, 8am to 10pm.

“On Sunday the 2nd of February and Monday the 3rd of February, stores will open from 9am to 9pm.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s other club play in front of lowest ever crowd as fuming Man Utd fans protest ticket price hike

SIR JIM RATCLIFFE’s other club played in front of a record LOW crowd in their final Europa League group match.

French outfit Nice welcomed Bodo/Glimt to the Allianz Riviera on Thursday night for what proved to be the final match of their European campaign this season.

Les Aiglons’ hopes of reaching the knockout stages had long gone up in smoke and they went into the match second-bottom of the 36-man table.

Scores of fans opted not to attend Thursday’s academic match against Bodo, which led to a record-low attendance.

A mere 4,272 supporters were in attendance for the 1-1 draw.

And 800 of the fans in attendance were Bodo supporters who had made the long journey from Norway.

Nice boss Franck Haise said: “I think we’ll have fewer people at the stadium than against OM.

“That’s all I’ll say. We have to be worthy of the competition.

“And then there’s an interest for those who are going to play and prove that they can perform.”

The midweek attendance figure was a stark contrast to the number of supporters who packed the Allianz for Nice’s clash with Olympique Marseille last weekend.

JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS

Just over 31,000 fans were in attendance to watch Haise’s men record a 2-0 victory over the visitors.

Nice fans have largely spoken positively about Ratcliffe since his company, INEOS, took ownership of the club in 2019.

But the same can’t be said of Manchester United supporters, who have been irked by a number of the billionaire’s decisions since he became a shareholder in December 2023.

Ratcliffe drew the ire of the Old Trafford faithful by laying off 250 staff members last July and then asking club legend Sir Alex Ferguson to step down from his ambassador role the following October.

But his decision to raise ticket prices to £66 per game and axe concessionary pricing for children and seniors has really enraged fans.

And supporters vocalised their anger during the Red Devils’ 1-0 win over Fulham last weekend.

Sections of the travelling fans were heard chanting: “Jim Ratcliffe’s a c**t, Jim Ratcliffe’s a c**t.

“Just like the Glazers, Jim Ratcliffe’s a c**t.”

United will be back in action on Sunday, welcoming Crystal Palace to Old Trafford.

One of the UK’s best cities to get new ‘game-changer’ £120million train station

A HUGE new train station is set to open in a major UK city which has been described as a ‘game-changer’.

St Mellons in Cardiff, being dubbed Cardiff Parkway Station, has finally given the go-ahead, nearly three years after getting planning permission back in 2022.

Cardiff Parkway
It will be the first station for East Cardiff in decades[/caption]

The new station will be seven minutes from the main central Cardiff station, and hopes to “improve connectivity to other areas of the country and the wider UK”.

The four platform railway station would have eight trains an hour between Cardiff and Newport.

And longer train routes would include connections to Bristol, Manchester and London.

It would welcome more than 800,000 people a year, when built.

New park and ride facilities would improve access to the station, which isn’t common across Cardiff.

Initial plans set the cost of the new station at £120million, although this is likely to go up.

Cardiff Council Leader, Cllr Huw Thomas said the new station would “enhance the city’s future“.

He added: “Cardiff Parkway will significantly improve our transport infrastructure, leading to economic growth and job creation across Cardiff and the wider region.”

And Senedd Member for South Wales Central, Andrew RT Davies MS added: “This new station will be a game changer for Cardiff.”

The last time East Cardiff had a railway station was in 1959 with one in Marshfield, Newport.

East Cardiff currently has no railway station – there was one just over the council border in Marshfield, Newport, but this closed in 1959.

Currently, journeys from from St Mellons to Cardiff city centre take 25 minutes by car, but will be just seven minutes by train.

A new route from Cardiff connects the city to Edinburgh, with a new direct service.

Stopping at 22 stations, the journey takes around six hours.

Elsewhere in the UK, Oxford’s main train station is undergoing an £161million revamp.

New direct routes will also connect Oxford and Cambridge.

Cambridge is getting a new £183million train station, with Cambridge South Station opening this year.

And two new train stations are being built as part of the new HS2 line.

Three scenic train journeys you can take in the UK

Cornish Coast – One trip that rail enthusiasts seem to love is along a stretch of the Cornish coast and takes just 10 minutes to complete.

The route from St Erth to St Ives only stops at Carbis Bay en route to its final destination, but the views out the window for the whole journey are pretty spectacular.

Another highlight of the journey is that St Ives station is situated right next to Porthminster beach, meaning the sand and sea can be accessed almost immediately.

Meanwhile, the station is less than a ten minute walk into town, where the harbour, shops, galleries and pubs can be explored.

Durham to Edinburgh – Another train route that people in the UK love is the East Coast train line between Durham and Edinburgh, with coastal views and city landscapes among the sights that can be seen out the window.

Newcastle, Berwick, Lindisfarne and Durham Cathedral are all among the highlights on that route.

Scotland’s West Highland Line – While Scotland is home to plenty of famous landmarks and top attractions, it also has one of the most breathtaking train routes in the world.

Scotland’s West Highland Line has previously been dubbed the best rail journey in the world by Wanderlust – and it’s easy to see why.

The journey from Glasgow to Fort William is one of my favourite train routes – and I’ve interrailed through mainland Europe.

With mountain landscapes, serene lochs, wistful moors, and wildlife all visible through the train window, it’s certainly a route all holidaymakers should consider doing at least once.

Old Oak Common will be a new £2billion ‘super station’.

And the new £460million Curzon Street Station will open in Birmingham – the first of its kind in the UK in 130 years.

Kelsey Parker seen for the first time since pregnancy announcement after hitting back over Max George ‘feud’

KELSEY Parker has been spotted for the first time since her pregnancy announcement after hitting back over her Max George ‘feud.’

Kelsey and Tom share Bodhi and Aurelia together[/caption]

The blonde beauty shares two kids, Aurelia, five, and Bodhi, four, with Tom, who was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour in 2020 before passing away in March 2022.

And she was spotted looking in great spirits after revealing her baby news, as she strolled along with her two children.

Kelsey opted for a barefaced look as she grabbed a Costa coffee and kept warm in a large black patterned coat.

Aurelia and Bodhi could be seen beside her in warm outfits as they grinned away.

The family were spotted enjoying a day out on a very rainy Friday, as she grabbed a coffee before heading to her car with the smiley tots.

Kelsey kept her bump concealed in an all black look with her large floor length coat on over the top.

It comes as Kelsey spoke exclusively to Fabulous about the alleged ‘strained’ friendship with Tom’s bandmate Max George, and claims she’s been left ‘deeply hurt’ by him.

She said: “There’s no feud on my part. I’m a busy woman. I’ve got two kids. I’m growing a baby. I’ve not got the time for falling out with people and having feuds. It really ain’t a bit of me.”

While the band rallied around Kelsey in the early days and Max even gave a heart-wrenching eulogy at Tom’s funeral in April 2023, they have not remained as close as the years have gone on.

While Kelsey has been dealing with her own grief as well as raising her and Tom’s two kids, Max has had battles of his own.

The 36-year-old had to undergo urgent heart surgery after being diagnosed with a block.

He had to be fitted with a pacemaker and was so scared he was going to die that he wrote his will.

“We’re both having hard times. Obviously, I wish Max all the wellness in the world, because I wouldn’t want anyone to go through any ill health or anything,” Kelsey added.

“When you’ve lost someone you realise there are much bigger things to get upset [about].

“But there’s no feud on my behalf.”

Meanwhile she revealed that Tom’s other The Wanted bandmates rushed to congratulate her on expecting a baby.

“Jay [McGuinness] was so excited. He can’t wait for the baby and Siva [Kaneswaran] messaged me and congratulated me too, which was nice,” she said.

“Everyone has been really kind and is pleased for me.”

Kelsey is still close to her late husband’s family including his mum, Noreen, who was thrilled by the news that she was expecting.

In an interview last week with OK! Magazine, she said: “We’ve all been through so much together.

“But I’m here and bringing another baby into the world.”

Tom’s family were equally supportive of her getting together with her new partner, Will, who lost his dad when he was young.

Speaking to Fabulous last month, she said: “I met Will on a night out. We were both out with friends.

“He didn’t know who I was and when I told him about Tom, he was so understanding, it didn’t freak him out.”

While Kelsey admitted she was terrified of the reaction from the public after she announced her new relationship, she felt confident it was the right thing to do, having had Tom’s blessing as well as his family’s.

“When Tom passed away, his mum Noreen said: ‘Whatever you choose to do, I will support you’,” she revealed.
