Driver caught doing 106kmh in 60 zone as Gardai crackdown on Bank Holiday rule breakers

A MOTORIST was caught speeding 46kmh over the speed limit on the busy road as thousands of vehicles have been checked for speed over the first Bank Holiday weekend of the year.

Gardai have been carrying out the road operation nationwide since 7am on Thursday as part of the St Brigid’s Day Bank Holiday weekend roads policing operation.

Throughout the operation, Gardai are conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints from Thursday to Tuesday.

Since the operation commenced on Thursday morning, nearly 580 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the first 48 hours.

To date, a total of 63 people have been arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant, which is alcohol and drugs.

There were three fatalities on the roads during the first 48 hours of the operation, bringing the total number to 14 fatal deaths this year.

Gardai revealed that most road motorists were travelling within the designated speed, but four drivers were detected to be driving dangerously.

One of the motorists was detected driving 139km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N4 at Cullen Beg in Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

Another driver was caught speeding 116km/h in a 80km/h zone on the N55 at Lissoy in Glasson, Co Westmeath.

One was detected driving 106km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R702 at Ballyellin and Tomdarragh in Goresbridge, Co Carlow.

And another was spotted speeding 86km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R661 at Holycross in Co Tipperary.

Despite the figures being reduced, there is a low number of motorists using the roads as communities continue to deal with the effects of Storm Eowyn.

Gardai urges all drivers to “use the roads with care” during the long weekend.

They stated that the risk of a fatal or serious injury road traffic collision is at its highest between midday and 3pm on the four days of the St Brigid’s Day Bank Holiday Weekend.

Drivers are also reminded to plan and organise a safe way home if socialising over the coming days, especially when planning to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

‘TAKE EXTRA CARE’

A spokesperson for Gardai said: “An Garda Síochána is urging the public to use the roads with care over the Bank Holiday weekend.

“The risk of a fatal or serious injury road traffic collision is at its highest between midday and 3pm on each of the four days of the St Brigid’s Day Bank Holiday Weekend.

“An Garda Síochána is appealing all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Drivers and all other road users are being reminded to plan ahead and organise a safe way home if socialising over the coming days.

“All drivers who are taking to the roads this weekend are reminded to slow down, take extra care and to give your driving your full attention.”

Gladiator wows RTE Late Late Show viewers as she easily squats Patrick Kielty before discussing Ireland star brother

LYSTUS Ebosele is making a BIG name for herself in the UK as the newest Gladiator on the BBC’s modern version of the classic show.

And she made quite an impression back home in her debut appearance on The Late Late Show.

The fitness influencer can bench press 145kg

The Enniscorthy native outlined her hopes for the empowering message she’ll be able to send to girls with her new platform on a programme that routinely draws in 6 MILLIONS viewers.

Her chat with Patrick Kielty went up another level right at the end as the host got hoisted up over her shoulders.

He had quizzed her on her weightlifting maxes given that she was a champion powerlifter before embarking on this TV career.

Lystus AKA Cyclone mentioned that her best exercise is the squat which she has maxed out at 245kg.

At that juncture the Down man noted that he’s around the 83kg mark so it wouldn’t be much of a challenge for her to squat him.

Sure enough she was doing a full set of repetitions with ease a few moments later as the 54-year-old managed to throw to ad break despite being a little discombobulated.

Earlier in the snippet, she’d also touched on her brother Festy being a full Ireland international.

The speedster broke into the senior team under Stephen Kenny and was one of Ireland’s better performers when deployed by Heimir Hallgrimsson over the November window.

It just so happens that the right-back had had a…whirlwind 24 hours over the course of Friday too.

He has joined Turkish outfit Basaksehir for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old had his loan spell at Watford cut short by parent club Udinese to allow him to make the switch to Turkey

He has signed a deal at the Istanbul-based club until June 2028 and could make his debut this weekend against Samsunspur.

Basaksehir are currently seventh in the Super Lig, and beat St Patrick’s Athletic on their way to the Conference League group stages this season.

They won the league in 2020, though are traditionally one of the smaller clubs in Turkey though they have a collaboration agreement with Manchester City.

Ebosele has made the switch as he becomes the first Irish man to ever play for a Turkish club having impressed at Watford this season.

The former Derby County joined the Hornets on loan from sister club Udinese – where he made 38 Serie A appearances – last August and made 18 appearances.

His form has also saw him become a regular in the Ireland set-up with seven caps for Ireland, including starts in the last two games.
