England player ratings: Maro Itoje leads by example but Alex Mitchell made to rue missed tackle on return vs Ireland

ENGLAND suffered a shocking second-half collapse against Ireland as their Six Nations opener fell apart in a 27-22 defeat.

The Red Roses dominated the first 40 minutes before the Boys in Green showed them what’s what in the next.

Ireland scored three tries in a rampant second-half display as they launched their bid for a third successive Six Nations title.

While two late tries from Tom Curry and Tommy Freeman offered some sort of consolation in the way of a losing bonus point.

It is, however, a sixth defeat in seven matches for under-fire coach Steve Borthwick.

Here’s how SunSport’s Martin Lipton rated every Red Rose from Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.

Freddie Steward – 6

Secure and so solid under the high ball but made to look silly by Gibson-Park when he left the full-back on his backside for Ireland’s first points.

Tommy Freeman – 5

Few chances to really explode down the wing and among those outfoxed by Aki for Ireland’s second try. Not sure the Northampton man is a game-breakeR

Henry Slade – 7

Superb grubber to set up Murley for the early England try and made a stream of big hits as he defended with relish and passion.

Ollie Lawrence – 7

Carried the ball with power and his tackling was as exceptional as those of Slade alongside him.

Cadan Murley – 7

Dream debut for the Harlequins winger as he scored a beauty inside the first 10 minutes.

Spent much of the remainder of the game defending for his life.

Marcus Smith – 7

Showed that imagination and footwork from the outset to give England hope and inspiration.

Alex Mitchell – 5

Returning scrum half brought calmness but the missed tackle on Lowe, just as Smith was getting ready to return, was critical.

Ellis Genge – 6

Old fashioned grunt and grind in the front row rarely gets the plaudits but it meant England were never going backwards at the set-piece.

Luke Cowan-Dickie – 6

Missed his first line out but other than that got the radar working, a vital factor with England a jumper short because of the back row mix.

Will Stuart – 6

Another whose best work goes unrecognised by most but he showed the same application as his team-mates.

Maro Itoje – 8

The new captain promised he would lead by example. He did not disappoint in an all-action demonstration of his prowess.

George Martin – 7

Worked well in tandem with his captain to ensure England were able to compete and nat times silence the home crowd.

Tom Curry – 7

Like his twin, the Sale flanker seemed to be popping up everywhere within a remorseless determination.

Ben Curry – 7

Ireland really must have wondered how many Currys were on the pitch as he gave total commitment to the cause.

Ben Earl – 6

The Saracens man might not be a traditional No 8 but his willingness to bust his guts from first to last minute is a sign of his mentality and quality.

Replacements:

Dan (for Cowan Dickie) – 6

Did his job in a difficult cause

Willis (for Earl) – 6

Came on just as the tide really started to turn against England. Could not stem it. 6

Cunningham-South (for Ben Curry) – 6

Sent on to give England more bulk and energy in the last quarter 6

Chessum (for Martin) – 6

Back after injury and giving England extra line-out capacity in the final stages.

F Smith (for Steward) – 6

All or nothing move with namesake Marcus moving to full-back but the die was cast 6

Randall (for Mitchell) – 6

Another who came on when the game was gone 6

Baxter (for Genge) – 5

Run out in the last 10 as England were left increasingly ragged 5

Heyes (for Stuart) – 5

Also a late introduction as the Red Rose wilted 5

Katie Price’s ex Carl Woods slams her ‘latest attention-grab’ & claims she ‘didn’t care if he was the dad of baby No. 6’

KATIE Price’s ex-fiancé Carl Woods has called her IVF documentary an “attention-grab” and claimed she “didn’t care if he was the dad of her sixth baby baby”.

It comes as viewers watched the former couple on their journey for a first child together in a new two-part Channel 4 documentary.

Katie, 46, and Carl, 35, were told early on the chance of success was less than one percent.

Regardless of this warning, and despite serious issues with their relationship, the pair went ahead with the treatment.

But Carl has slammed Katie – who already has five kids – saying she was “using” him.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun, he said: “It wasn’t about having a kid with me.

“It was just about an attention grab, the latest puppy she wants.

“It didn’t matter if it was me or just a sperm donor. It’s not a story about how much I really want a kid with you.

“Katie just wants a kid with anybody who’s going to donate sperm to her. So excuse me if I’m a bit flippant about it.”

Continuing, Carl added: “Like I said before, it was all wrong.

“It was a very awkward thing to be filming given the circumstances, and then to be edited in such a way that makes it look like ‘oh she’s surprised she’s been blocked one morning’ when the night before she didn’t come home.”

Carl is referring to a scene in the documentary where he blocked Katie and failed to attend a check-up the week before donor eggs were due to be transferred.

He told The Sun what was behind that decision and insists the production team removed it from the final edit.

He said: “It was biasedly edited to make it look like the reason that I blocked her and we broke up was because IVF failed and she was too old to give me a baby.

“And all of a sudden, she’s woke up one morning, I’m a no-show to the appointment, apparently, and I blocked her. And she doesn’t know why.

“The production company were more than aware of what was going on in the relationship.

“They edited this bit out. The reason I blocked her is the day before, she’d gone out for the day apparently to ‘work’.

“She had ignored me all day. Non contactable. On and offline on WhatsApp but I got ignored.

“It came to the evening. I was at her house and Jett FaceTimed her.

“She answered to Jett not knowing I was there and she was out on the p*ss and I could hear a fella talking with her.

“I went on to FaceTime and she told me to f**k off and hung up.

“She and the production company knew exactly the reason why I didn’t go to the next appointment.”

A spokesperson for Channel 4 said: “Katie Price: Making Babies is a fair and balanced representation of events during filming.”

During the documentary, the pair each spoke about their break-up to camera, with Carl insisting he’d done everything he could to support Katie.

He also complimented her mothering ability, calling her a “wonderful mum”, and said it was “heartbreaking” leaving behind her eldest son Harvey, 22, after three years of helping care for him.

However, he’s critical of the way Katie spoke about the end of their relationship in which she questioned if he really wanted a child with her and failed to mention the FaceTime fallout or the instances of cheating before filming began.

“Quite honestly, I find it’s embarrassing watching her babbling on,” said Carl.

“The poor me, woe is me victim act. It’s boring.

“Katie blames everybody, doesn’t she? Katie’s always the victim. Katie’s never done anything wrong.

“Well, Katie creates every one of her storms. And then she’s a match lighter, and then she stands back, watches it burn, and says, ‘oh, it wasn’t me’. That’s what she does.”

Carl described his appearance in the documentary as “realistic” and insists the IVF journey had no bearing on his decision to leave her.

He said “At one point in the first episode, I was eating in the car, and I said, ‘there’s worse things to leave over’.

“She said, ‘well, how do you feel?’ And I said, ‘well, it’s more about how you feel’. And she said, ‘well, I think you’re going to leave me’.

“And I said, ‘well, there’s worse things to leave over than this’. And what I was referring to was I’d already caught her cheating.”

Katie Price's love life

We take a look back at the highs and lows of Katie Price's relationship history.
