Government ‘don’t expect any hiccups’ over St Patrick’s Day US trip as Martin set to meet Donald Trump twice this year
TAOISEACH Micheal Martin will be meeting Donald Trump twice this year, The Irish Sun can reveal.
The pair are scheduled for a reunion on St Patrick’s Day in the White House.
And they will see each other again at the G20 summit in South Africa this November.
Ireland is not a member of the G20 but Mr Martin is being invited as a guest of the South African government in preparation for Ireland’s Presidency of the EU in 2026.
Preparations are currently underway for the traditional St Patrick’s Day Washington summit.
The formal invitation from President Trump is expected in the middle of February, but behind the scenes diplomatic preparations are already underway.
Ireland is the seventh biggest foreign investor in the United States – bigger than Israel.
A Government source said: “We will be working to build closer ties with the Trump administration and to improve relations between them and the EU.
“The President has been briefed on the level of Irish investment in America and he knows how important that is to the American people.
“We don’t expect any hiccups in relation to the St Patrick’s Day meeting and all the indications are that it will go ahead as planned.”
President Trump has also been informed that he is welcome to visit Ireland at any time — either on a State visit or to his golf course in Doonbeg, Co Clare.
This comes as Tanaiste Simon Harris earlier this week insists Ireland can do business with the Trump administration.
An economic report from Goodbody Stockbrokers warned that Trump’s economic policies pose the “biggest vulnerability” to the Irish economy.
President Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on EU goods travelling to the US with fears this could encourage American companies based in Ireland to start making their products in the States.
Officials in the Department of Finance fear Donald Trump’s policies will erode Ireland’s bumper corporation tax returns with US multinationals accounting for 83 per cent of our corporation tax.
However, Harris said the EU need to focus on improving trade and investment instead of just focusing on the US.
‘WE CAN DO BUSINESS’
He said: “It means engaging with President Trump in a way that I think he relates to about the benefits to the United States of America of doing business with the European Union and members states of the EU.
“I would respectfully point out when you look at trade in the round and when you include the issue of services it’s a very different or less stark picture to perhaps how it is somewhat presented in the US.
“So we can do business with the Trump administration. My country has done business with every US administration.
“There will be challenges. There will absolutely be challenges but we’ve got to control what we can control.”
Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell ‘offered shock Premier League transfer lifeline’ to end Stamford Bridge hell
BEN CHILWELL has been offered a shocking escape path from his Chelsea hell, reports suggest.
Chilwell has been frozen out of the Blues’ playing squad by manager Enzo Maresca, playing in just one League Cup game this season, after being placed in their so-called “bomb squad”.
However, he could now be offered a career lifeline by Crystal Palace.
According to talkSPORT, Palace are keen on signing the 28-year-old on a loan transfer deal.
Talks have been ongoing between the player and the clubs.
Chelsea would need to pay a portion of his £190,000-a-week wages for the move to happen.
A move to South London would appear to suit Chilwell and Palace alike.
Chilwell played his best football throughout his career when playing as a wing-back for Chelsea, which saw him become a regular in England squads and win the Champions League.
Oliver Glasner deploys a similar system at Selhurst Park, and the former Leicester star should prove himself a valuable asset as Palace aim to push themselves into the top half of the table.
Maresca has admitted he feels “shame” over the treatment of Chilwell this season.

Speaking on Chilwell’s future, he said: “Because players want to play more so there’s probably chances for them to leave.
“But Ben has been top. I have to say that, he has been top.
“Very professional, works hard. I feel shame because of that situation but in terms of behaviour, he has been very good.”
Chilwell was originally signed from Leicester for around £45million in 2020.
He has 107 appearances for the club since then amid a raft of injury issues.
Axel Disasi could follow Chilwell out of the door before Monday’s deadline, with talkSPORT also reporting he is not fancied by Maresca.

Cheryl Fergison flogs £15 tickets to see her perform at opening of Chinese take-away as star struggles to land work
FORMER soap star Cheryl Fergison is flogging tickets to fans to see her perform at the opening of a Chinese takeaway.
Cheryl – who once played the role of Heather Trott in EastEnders – last year opened up about her money struggles.
The 59-year-old emotionally told how she was forced to turn to a food bank and claim benefits for help.
But in a new bid to make cash, Cheryl will perform at a new Chinese takeaway throughout the weekend.
Posting on social media, the former soap actress said she’ll sing for diners at the The Dragon Lounge in Blackpool.
Tickets cost £15, which includes a Chinese supper.
Mum-of-one Cheryl will serenade customers with her vocals on Saturday and Sunday (Feb 1 and 2), kicking off at 7pm.
The new takeaway replaces The Great Fortune House which was closed down due too multiple health code violations.
Last year its former manager plead guilty to eleven offences relating section 19 of The Food Safety & Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.
Promoting the opening, Cheryl said: “Hi everyone, now then, first and second of February you know where you need to be.
“The Dragon Lounge in Cleveleys, 120 Victoria Road West, it’s a new business, I’ll be hosting all weekend, it’s Chinese New Year.”
She added: “I’ll be hosting both events, it will be a singing, karaoke and quiz. Oh yeah, general knowledge quiz, fantastic.
“Please come along, you don’t have to book you can if you want to, you can if you want to but you don’t have to book come along, we will fit you in no matter what.”
Cheryl recently begged her fans to “keep asking” TV bosses to hire her.
One of her followers had suggested she could work on Coronation Street.
The actress then replied: “Keep asking them please it’s just up the road that would be fantastic.”

Paul Townend ‘privileged to have him’ after Galopin Des Champs wins THIRD Irish Gold Cup at Dublin Racing Festival
GALOPIN DES CHAMPS maintained his Leopardstown dominance after winning his THIRD Irish Gold Cup at the Dublin Racing Festival.
The Willie Mullins-trained powerhouse ran up a seventh win from seven races on the chase track with Paul Townend on board.
Speaking to RacingTV, the jockey said: “There is a lot of pressure going out on him. Thankfully he is so simple to ride.
“I have ridden a lot of times around Leopardstown. When I jumped the last ditch I could hear the crowd.
“You can often pass in front of them and you don’t hear them. I was in the zone and I couldn’t believe how much of a roar it must have been to make it that far down the ride.
“The reception he got here the last day was really good and you saw here today.
“The crowd that come racing in Ireland, they really do appreciate a good horse, no matter who trains it.
“And they appreciate a foreign horse coming as well once it is a good horse.”
It was his third consecutive Gold Cup, having previously won it in 2023 and 2024, thus becoming the first since Florida Pearl to do the three in a row.
Paul Townend beat out Grangeclare West (66/1) and Fact To File (100/30).
And Galopin Des Champs is now priced at 8/13 favourite to win a third Cheltenham Gold Cup next month.
Townend added: “He obviously has huge talent. His appetite for it is the one. He puts his head down and he gallops.
“It is rare that you can turn in and it is a privilege to turn in at Leopardstown and you look at the last fence and you ride at it like it is not here.
“You know when you land you are going to go to the line. If one goes by you, they go by you but they would have to be very good
“He loves it around here. He takes to it and we are just very privileged to have him I think.”
