Airline introduces world-first hand luggage ban on popular travel gadget

AN airline has become the first in the world to ban power banks in hand luggage after a plan caught fire on the runway.

Air Busan confirmed that the gadget would be banned for all passenger’s cabin bags.

The majority of airlines already have power banks on their prohibited items list for any checked luggage going into the hold.

However, most still allow them into the cabin depending on their size.

The Korean airline introduced the new rule this week following a fire onboard a flight on January 28 and said it was a “pre-emptive measure”.

Passengers will be forced to keep them on their person at all times, or in their underseat bag but they will be told to remove them from any bags going into the overhead lockers.

All passengers and crew were safely evacuated from the Airbus 321 last month, after a flight attendant spotted the fire.

However, the aircraft has since been burned beyond repair.

An investigation is underway as to what caused the fire but it was thought to be a power bank.

Lo Kok-keung, a retried engineering professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, told the South China Morning Post on the dangers of power banks on planes.

He said: “If it creates a short circuit it can create a high temperature and burn the internal materials and create a fire which can burn clothing in the baggage.”

Other airlines have not suggested they will follow suit.

Some of the current UK airline rules ban power banks in checked luggage, as well as gadgets such as laptops and tablets.

For example, Ryanair says: “Customers can carry a maximum of two spare lithium ion batteries in carry-on baggage and these must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.”

Passengers are also warned not to try and retrieve their phones if they lose them down the side of the seat mid-flight.

In 2017, a man’s phone caught fire on a United Airlines flight after it fell between the seats, followed by a Delta Airline incident in 2018 when it started smoking for a similar reason.

Patrick Smith, a former pilot, said: “If you’re in an electrically controlled lie-flat seat, of the type common in first or business class, there are a number of nooks and crannies into which your phone can slip — beyond your reach and down into the mechanisms that control the seat’s various positions.

“To avoid this entire scenario, avoid leaving your phone near the edge of the console, from where it can easily slip or fall.”

Passengers should always alert flight crew if their phone falls down the side of the seat.

Here are some other items that are banned on flights.

Shaun Murphy steps down from key role after making admission following £350,000 snooker Masters win

SHAUN MURPHY has stepped down from a major role following his Masters win.

Murphy, 42, bagged the biggest payday of his career in January when he beat Kyren Wilson in the Alexandra Palace final.

The Englishman banked a whopping £350,000 as the champion – ten years on from his maiden Masters crown in 2015 – plus an extra £15,000 for his epic 147 break in the semi-final.

But now Murphy has decided to end his time as World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association Players Chairman.

He joined the board in 2023 following a run of poor results which saw him fail to reach the main draw in seven of his next 14 ranking events – and only going beyond round two twice.

The Magician then took on the role of chairman last May.

However, his Masters win prompted the world No6 to focus solely on his snooker again.

And as a result, he called time on his brief stint with the WPBSA.

Murphy said on his OneFourSeven podcast: “There’s no way of me sugarcoating it.

“The win at the Masters a couple of weeks ago has really shone a torch for me, into my own game and self-belief, that I can actually still do it at the very cutting edge, top end of the sport.

“I had started to think that that had gone. So, I started to look at other areas in the game where I could make a difference.

“That win has given me a tap on the shoulder to say, ‘You know what? You can still do this.’

“In the end, you can’t be all things to all people. You can’t be everywhere all at once, and it’s not a job I’m willing to give half of myself to.

“It’s not a responsibility – looking after the members, representing them, and fighting on their behalf – that I’m willing to give 75 per cent to it.

“I’m either in or I’m out. At the minute, I’m not able to represent them as well as I want and be as committed as I want to.

“So I think it’s right that I stand aside and allow somebody else to take the reins.”

Murphy also described taking on the position as WPBSA chairman as a “great honour” in a statement confirming his resignation with immediate effect.

He also leaves his role of non-executive director, leaving the WPBSA Players Board with Mark Davis, Ken Doherty and Ben Woollaston.

The Chase fans left baffled as Shaun Wallace fails ‘easy’ question – but would you get it right?

A man in a suit and glasses smiles slightly.

THE CHASE viewers have been unable to contain their shock after one of The Chasers got a simple question horribly wrong.

ITV viewers were left baffled as quiz guru Shaun Wallace, otherwise known as The Dark Destroyer, got a simple general knowledge question wildly wrong on The Chase.

The question saw him give a wild answer in the final moments of the ITV show[/caption]

Barrister Shaun, 64, has been a Chaser since the ITV show began in 2009 and is usually a force to be reckoned with.

Yet this time he failed a simple question as he attempted to catch up to the contestants at the end of the show in the final chase.

The question, asked by host Bradley Walsh, saw Shaun asked how many centimetres are in a metre with the barrister and quiz expert answering “ten”.

The real answer is hundred, and many viewers could not get over Shaun’s spectacular fail.

Taking to social media to share their shock, one viewer wrote: “Shaun is thick as mince sometimes for an intelligent man.”

Another posted: “Absolutely no way does Shaun not know how many cms are in a metre! I’m sure he does this deliberately at times!”

“Typical Shaun throwing a question when he has a low target,” said a third.

One viewer went direct to Shaun on X to tease him for the wild answer as they wrote: “@TheShaunWallace you’ve finally beaten “methylated cheese” as your worst ever answer.”

Another thought he might have gotten it wrong on purpose in an attempt to play down his intelligence as they pointed out: “The chasers aren’t allowed to deliberately play badly, its in their contract. But Shaun…. If he’s not throwing it, then he genuinely knows nothing…”

Another thought the same as they shared: “Q: How many centimetres in a metre? Shaun: Ten. Shaun trying his best to throw another Chase. GET IN THE BIN!”

The blunder from Shaun comes just weeks after he revealed his ‘kryptonite’ that would see him stumped on the ITV show.

Speaking to The Sun’s TV Mag, the former Mastermind champion revealed his ‘kryptonite’ – his weakest subject area.

He shared: “Every Achilles has a heel and my own quizzing kryptonite is soaps.

“I don’t watch them, I don’t like them, so if I’m ever asked questions on the subject, I’ll just guess!”

The Chase airs on ITV1 and ITVX.

The Chase's best moments

The Chase has been entertaining ITV viewers for years, here are some of the show's most memorable moments...

Bradley Walsh can’t stop laughing

  • Every time host Bradley Walsh erupts into fits of laughter on The Chase it makes for pretty entertaining TV. One particularly memorable occasion was when he was asking the question ‘The title of which Elvis Presley song was engraved of the inside of Freddie Star’s coffin?” As usual the contestant was given four multiple choices but Bradley could get through reading them out before bursting into hysterics. Seeming the idea of the song being option ‘B: Way Down’ was too much for the presenter to handle.

The Double Trouble special

  • To celebrate 15 years of The Chase on screens, ITV launched a special ‘double trouble’ episode where contestants faced off against not one but two of the show’s beloved Chasers. And despite the odds, the contestants managed to go home with some cash!

The contestants with famous names

  • Eagle-eyed ITV fans are always quick to spot interesting and sometimes hidden details on the quiz show – but there have been a few times where the names of some contestants have been overtly obvious. For example, one 2017 episode of the quiz show saw Bradley welcome four contestants who were named after Friends characters Ross, Rachel, Phoebe and Joey. Another group of contestants with named from The Simpsons were also grouped together in another episode, much to viewers’ amusement.

The Beast’s anger gets the best of him

  • During an episode from the 2024 season, Mark Labbett let out his inner beast as he exploded in a fit of anger. Close to losing the competition in the Final Chase, Mark then made a silly mistake and incorrectly answered the question, “Rabbit was a 1980 hit for which Cockney duo?” “Oh, you idiot!” he yelled at himself while slamming the table in front of him. With seconds left on the clock, the Chaser then admitted defeat, moaning “I don’t deserve to win.”
