Secrets of a school headteacher
By the Secret Schoolteacher
I STARTED working in schools in 1996, when parents respected teachers and left us alone to do our jobs. Not any more.
Nowadays parents think nothing of barging into schools to read teachers the riot act if their precious child has been told off, or they’ll send angry emails in the middle of the night. Warning — it doesn’t make you popular.
I’ve worked in all manner of schools across the south west of England, from state schools to private, and I can tell you that right now many teachers are dreading the start of the new school year.
They’re braced for tears and tantrums, not just from their pupils but from their parents too.
Believe me, if you are an annoying parent it will spread round the staff room like wildfire.
So whether it’s your kid’s first day at a new school, or they’re moving up a year, these are the things you do that drive teachers crazy . . .
Parents often turn up at the school gates complaining how frazzled they are, moaning that teachers must have had a nice long holiday while their six weeks stuck with the kids was the worst.
Nothing could be further from the truth. For the first two weeks I’ll almost certainly have been struck down by a lurgy which always seems to strike on the first day of the holiday.
The next two weeks might have been an actual holiday, just like the average Brit takes in the summer, followed by two weeks of frantic lesson planning and administration.
Also, consider that I’ve probably been working over 50 hours per week during term time. Contrary to popular opinion, we don’t clock off at 3pm.
Instead, we’re roped into all manner of after-school activities and meetings before going home to do marking and more lesson planning. Please don’t turn up and make sarcastic remarks about our “six weeks off”.
We won’t be happy.
Some charities offer help to families in need too.
But bear in mind charities often have a limited amount of money to give and usually have specific criteria which must be met in order to get a grant.
Charity Turn2Us has a free grants search tool on its website, which you can use to find out what help is available to you.
Meanwhile, you can always try approaching your nearest Citizens’ Advice branch.
If you don’t know where your nearest Citizens’ Advice branch is, you can find out by visiting www.citizensadvice.org.uk/about-us/contact-us/nearby/.
If you’re not eligible for a school uniform grant you might be able to get help through the Household Support Fund.

Fans fear Canelo Alvarez vs Jake Paul is ‘CONFIRMED’ as Terence Crawford super-fight gets cancelled
CANELO ALVAREZ’S super-fight against Terence Crawford looks to be OFF – with fans fearing it means he will face Jake Paul instead.
The Ring Magazine – no owned by Saudi boxing supremo Turki Alalshikh – reported that the blockbuster had been agreed for September.
Canelo Alvarez was in talks to fight Terence Crawford in September[/caption] But the super-fight is now off[/caption]And the £1.5BILLION Las Vegas Raiders stadium – which sits up to 65,000 people – had been targeted to host the bout.
But The Ring now say the fight is cancelled – without citing a reason.
It does come amid shock reports that YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul and Mexican great Canelo are in talks for a May bout.
So fans were quick to suggest that is the reason Canelo’s deal with Crawford has collapsed.
One said: “He really fighting Jake Paul isn’t he.”
Another added: “Jake Paul here we come.”
One raged: “OH NO. JAKE v CANELO CONFIRMED.”
Another feared: “Please don’t tell me Canelo is actually fighting Jake Paul.”

Crawford, 37, started his career at 135lb as a lightweight and won world titles in four divisions up to light-middleweight at 154lb.
And he was due to step up to the 168lb super-middleweight limit to challenge for Canelo’s titles.
But Canelo, 34, is without an opponent for his customary Cinco de Mayo fight date in May.
And Dan Rafael reported how the four-weight champ was in early talks to face Paul, 28, on May 3 in Vegas.
Mexican journalist Julianis Julius meanwhile claimed an agreement to fight was already in place.
Paul has long called out Canelo – who has also refused to rule out the fight in the past.
His last bout was up at heavyweight – where he weighed 16st 2lb – for his controversial win over 58-year-old legend Mike Tyson.
Canelo meanwhile fights FOUR STONE lighter than Paul.
But the internet star and his camp have suggested they would be willing to come down to 185lb for a catchweight clash with Canelo.

THE Israeli military has already begun drawing up plans to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
The move comes after Donald Trump revealed his jaw-dropping plan “Make Gaza Great Again” to turn the enclave into a “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Trump’s plan would see 2 million Palestinians relocating[/caption] Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the IDF is preparing plans to relocate Palestinians[/caption]The President’s controversial scheme could see the US troops seizing Gaza and 2 million Palestinians forcibly removed to Egypt and Jordan.
The proposition that left the world stunned, was welcomed by Israel with Benjamin Netanyahu praising Trump for “thinking outside the box with fresh ideas.”
And today Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said he has ordered the army to prepare a plan to allow Palestinians to leave Gaza voluntarily.
He said: “I have instructed the (army) to prepare a plan that would allow any Gaza resident who wishes to leave to do so, to any country willing to accept them.
“The plan will include exit options through land crossings, as well as special arrangements for departure by sea and air.”
The Defence Minister added: “Hamas used Gaza residents as human shields and built terror infrastructure in the heart of the population, and is now holding them hostage, extorting money from them by use of humanitarian aid, and preventing them from leaving Gaza.”
Katz also praised Trump’s “courageous plan, which could enable a wide swath of the population in Gaza to leave to various places around the world.”
Speaking about potential countries Palestinians could be moved to, he replied: “Countries like Spain, Ireland, Norway and others, which have levelled accusations and false claims against Israel over its actions in Gaza, are legally obligated to allow any Gaza resident to enter their territories.”
Katz also referred to Canada, which has “an organized immigration program and has previously voiced a willingness to absorb Gazan residents.”
He added: “Gaza’s residents should be allowed the freedom to exit and emigrate, as is the practice anywhere around the world.”
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares rejected Katz’s suggestion that Spain should accept displaced Palestinians.
He said during an interview with radio station RNE: “Gazans’ land is Gaza and Gaza must be part of the future Palestinian state.
It comes after Trump unveiled his shocking plan to take over Gaza and move 2 million Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan.
The president described Gaza as a “demolition site” and vowed he would turn it into “something the entire Middle East can be very proud of.”
“The US will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it too…we’re going to develop it, create thousands and thousands of jobs, and it’ll be something that the entire Middle East can be very proud of,” Trump said after the meeting.
When asked about US troops entering Gaza, he responded, “As far as Gaza is concerned, we’ll do what is necessary. If it’s necessary, we’ll do that.”
It is estimated that such a plan could take more than 20 years and involve the US clearing millions of tons of rubble.
Experts told The Sun the scheme could take years to complete and would cost billions and billions of dollars.
But some experts reckon the solution would be welcomed by Palestinians.
Former Israeli intelligence official Avi Melamed argued that Palestinians would be more than happy to get rid of Hamas’s evil regime.
Melamed said Trump’s words sent “an enormous shockwave” across the region.
He said: “It reshuffled the cards. As you expect and understand, there has been robust responses from across the region.
“I would guess that Trump did not out of the blue came up with that statement.
“There has been, there will be, discussion with major Arab players involved, who are relevant.”
Former Mossad agent Avner Avraham admitted that Israel was surprised to hear Trump’s remarks but “was looking forward to see it” and described as the first step to bring peace in the Middle East.
Avner, described the plan as a “creative” idea and said he believes Palestinians would actually welcome it as it would lead to a “normal Palestinian authority”
He told The Sun: “It was a big surprise for many people in Israel.
“I know for sure that Trump is not looking for war, he’s trying to close all the wars between Ukraine and Russia, between Israel and all the countries surrounding Israel.
“He doesn’t want to see Hamas in Gaza anymore.
“Even the Palestinian authority don’t want them because they took over Gaza, and they killed many of the Palestinian authority people.
“I feel that most of the people in Gaza became hostages under the Hamas.”

By Aliki Kraterou
PRESIDENT Trump shocked the world when he announced his controversial plan to take over war-stricken Gaza and turn it into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
The scheme “Make Gaza Great Again” could see the US troops seizing the enclave and 2 million Palestinians forcibly removed to Egypt and Jordan.
The president described Gaza as a “demolition site” and vowed he would turn it into “something the entire Middle East can be very proud of.”
Trump said his plan to restructure Gaza would include removing the bombs, redeveloping the buildings, and providing jobs for Gaza’s people.
He said while Palestinians would be able to return, it would be “the world’s people” who live in Gaza.
It is estimated that such a plan could take more than 20 years and involve the US clearing millions of tons of rubble.
The jaw-dropping scheme has sparked condemnation as it would see residents forced out of the enclave.
Arab states rejected his plans – and questions have been raised of their legality in international courts.

Five tips doctor told Davina McCall to follow to live longer & healthier – the last takes less than 5 minutes a day
ALL of us would like to live a healthy life for as long as possible and many tend to assume that life expectancy is largely determined by genetics.
However, although there’s no denying that genes do play a role, it’s actually not as key as your lifestyle and diet.
As you get older, your risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia and other diseases grow exponentially higher – but is it possible to slash the risk?
According to computational biologist and science writer Andrew Steele, there are five ways to boost your health and slow down the ageing process – and you can start with just five minutes a day.
Brushing your teeth
We all know that brushing our gnashers is essential for keeping those pearly whites sparkling – and maintaining a good oral hygiene.
But turns out, this everyday step can also slow down the ageing process.
The guru, who advised to brush and floss your teeth twice a day, explained: ”The first studies that came out were in the 90s and they showed that the people who had better oral health tended to get less heart disease.
”If you’ve got gum disease, bacteria in your mouth causing tooth decay then that is a fight that your immune system can never quite win,” Andrew told Davina McCall on Begin Again with Davina McCall podcast.
”It’s constantly fizzing and buzzing with inflammation happening in your mouth – and that we know can have an impact throughout your body. It can increase the risk of heart attack, for example.”
Inflammation is a protective response by your body’s immune system.
It is how the body normally reacts to injury, disease, or infection from bacteria or viruses. That acute response is needed for healing.
Researchers have learned that as we age, the body develops increased inflammation that does not go away.
This chronic inflammation is believed to accelerate the ageing process and contribute to various health conditions, including:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Arthritis (including rheumatoid arthritis)
- Cancer
- Heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes.
Good night’s sleep
Successful ageing starts with a good night’s sleep – but how many hours should you really be aiming for?
According to the expert, people will see the most benefits when they go for seven to eight hours every night – which many of us are guilty of not getting.
Recent study also suggested that poor sleep quality in your 40s can affect your brain health later in life, Healthline reported.
“Whether through the clearing of debris, […] or providing down-time to various systems, the quantity and quality of sleep have profound physiologic impacts that impact our day to day thinking, memory, and mood as well as our long-term risk of cognitive decline and dementia,” said Scott Kaiser, the director of Geriatric Cognitive Health for the Pacific Neuroscience Institute at Providence Saint John’s Health Center.
”There’s even evidence that if you look into the brain of people with dementia, you can find bacteria that cause gum disease.”
Don’t bother with supplements
Another less conventional tip which may surprise many is to not bother with supplements, the expert said.
”As a healthy person, you don’t need to mega-dose on vitamin D.
”If your doctor has recommended that you’re deficient in something, then take it – it’s absolutely important,” he emphasised.
”But a lot of vitamin supplements are based on an old hypothesis on ageing science […].
”The way that we make energy is we get food, we essentially burn it with the oxygen in the air. So, you eat your food and the sugar in the food, the oxygen in the air then burns that sugar – and that’s how you produce energy.
”Now, because oxygen is a really reactive chemical, sometimes the mitochondria (organelles in cells that produce energy) that are doing this reaction [….], sometimes they fumble the oxygen molecule effectively and they create free radical.”
Free radicals are unstable atoms that can damage cells, causing illness and ageing.
Free radicals are linked to ageing and a host of diseases, but little is known about their role in human health, or how to prevent them from making people sick.
Although for years it was widely assumed that free radicals are ”bad”, Andrew debunked this theory.
How much exercise should you do and when?
There are guidelines issued by the NHS and the Government regarding how much exercise people should do each day.
People should be active daily, and avoid sitting for long periods.
The NHS recommends an adults – those aged 19 to 64 – should aim for 150 minutes of “moderate intensity activity” a week.
This works out to 21 minutes a day, or 30 minutes five days a week.
Or, they could do 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week, which could be less than 11 minutes per day or 25 minutes three days a week.
Adults should also aim to do strength exercises twice a week, at least.
Examples of moderate-intensity activities include brisk walking, water aerobics, riding a bike, dancing, doubles tennis, pushing a lawn mower, hiking or rollerblading.
Examples of vigorous activities include running, swimming, riding a bike fast or on hills, walking up the stairs, sports, like football, rugby, netball and hockey, skipping, aerobics, gymnastics or martial arts.
Things like lifting heavy weights, sprinting up hills, spin classes or circuit training are considered very vigorous.
What time should you exercise?
Getting exercise into your day, no matter what time is a good idea.
But you may want to be more selective depending on your goal.
A 2023 US study on 5,285 middle-aged adults showed exercising between 7 and 9 am was the best time if you’re looking to lose weight.
Researchers found that early-bird gym goers had a lower body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference than those working out later.
A 2022 study led by Prof Paul J Arciero, Skidmore College, New York, found that the optimal time of day to get your kit on might differ according to your gender.
Prof Arciero said women wanting to lose fat around their belly and hips would do better to hit the gym in the morning, but those seeking to gain upper body strength or simply improve their mood might see more results from evening exercise.
The results were the opposite for men.
If you struggle to get to sleep, it’s been found that exercise in the morning may help, but exercise in the evening may help you to stay asleep.
Exercise, generally, can improve sleep quality.
”We thought they were bad and this was for a long time a leading theory of ageing.
”The theory was that maybe you can have a lot of these free radicals, it can increase the speed of this damage and that would increase the rate at which you age.”
He went on, basing his comments on more recent studies done in the 2000s.
”It’s one of those things that is not surprising in hindsight. Life has been breathing oxygen for about a billion years – and that means we’ve got mechanisms to deal with these free radicals.
”And actually, our body uses them [free radicals] for things. So, the mitochondria – they are the powerplant of the cell. But they also talk to the other parts of your cell.
”And one of the ways they talk is using free radicals.”
The pro also added that there are immune cells called neutrophils – a type of white blood cell that help the body fight infection and heal injuries.
”If you have a bacterial infection, the neutrophils rush to the place where the bacteria are and spray these free radicals over them – and kill the bacteria.
”They’re using the fact that free radicals are damaging – but to your advantage.
”So if you take some vitamin C supplement, it mops up these free radicals and it’s quite likely that your body will produce more free radicals to compensate for the fact – cause it still needs them.”
Quit smoking
It may sound obvious but one of the key things that could lead to a longer life is giving up smoking.
”If you quit smoking when you’re 30 or before 30, you basically get all of the years back.
”It’s not quite as good as if you had never smoked before, but it’s more or less there.
”Even when you are in your 60s, you will still get quite a few years back.
”That level of inflammation that comes along with smoking cigarettes after a few months starts to subside – and you gradually revert back to the biology of someone who’s never smoked in their life.”
Inflammation is a protective response by your body’s immune system.
While the pro noted that vaping wasn’t as dangerous as smoking and there isn’t enough data at the moment to prove the opposite, it’s certainly a habit that’s causing damage.
”No matter how late you’re thinking of quitting, it is never too late.”
Keeping active
Getting more exercise is great not just for a mental health boost but also staying physically fit, with cardio working wonders for your heart.
There’s also no need to spend long hours at the gym – according to the expert, you can significantly improve your health just by exercising 15 to 20 minutes a day.
”We’ve seen that strength training is super important too […], especially as you get older.”
Strength training, also known as resistance training or weight training, is a type of exercise that uses resistance to build strength.
Examples of strength training include squats, push-ups, and chin-ups, and even using resistance bands – that will both improve your strength but also keep your body toned.
”Again, it’s never too late to start. I found a study of 90-somethings where they gave them a strength-training programme.
”And over the course of a few weeks they got stronger, they could walk further and faster.
”No step is too small. If you’re sedentary and you never get up from the couch all day, you drive your car to work, sit at the desk all day, drive home and have a TV dinner – if you just walk for five minutes a day, you’ve already increased your health.
”As you start doing more exercise when you get to 25 to 30 minutes average of moderate to vigorous exercise, the benefits really start flying off.”
