RTE star Doireann Garrihy has admitted she “needed a break” from her 2FM breakfast show.
The Dancing With The Stars host presented 2FM Breakfast with Donncha O’Callaghan and Carl Mullan from 2019 to 2024.
The dynamic trio quickly became a fan favourite with listeners all over the country with over 142,000 people tuning in from 6am to 9am.
However, after five years waking up the nation, Doireann announced she would be departing the station in a shock statement.
Discussing the decision, the Dublin star recently told VIP Magazine: “I just needed a break.
“It was the right time for me to leave. And I made the decision based on my gut, which I have always done.”
The popular presenter joked that her family and friends “always backed and supported” her, but this time they had a different reaction.
She added: “They were like, ‘Oh, here’s Doireann going with her gut again, making these decisions.’”
Doireann explained that there was “no point” in making her decision any other way.
The TV star emphasised: “It felt right for me then, I knew what the rest of my year looked like. I knew what the start of 2025 looked like with Dancing With The Stars. I knew I needed a break as well.”
But, after nine months away from radio, the 32-year-old was itching to get back to her old tricks.
Last month, Doireann revealed that she would be making a major return to 2FM with her “very own show”.
She added: “When I left in May, I knew that I wasn’t finished in radio forever. I absolutely knew and felt that.”
Doireann will take over the driver’s seat of the popular drive time slot.
The new show, 2FM Drive with Doireann Garrihy, will run from 3pm to 6pm.
‘I’M BACK’
In an excited post to her Instagram account, the 32-year-old wrote: “I am so beyond excited to tell you I am BACK Weekdays from 3-6pm on @rte2fm.
“Radio is where my heart is, and absence has only made the heart grow fonder. It is an absolute dream come true to have my very own show.
“I CANNOT WAIT to put my own stamp on it, to rise at a reasonable hour and to be back with you, the listeners. Bring it on.”
RTE radio stars Carl Mullan, Roz Purcell, and Aisling Bonner are also set to front an all-new Breakfast Show as part of a major airwaves shake-up at the station.
