This was Lidl’s first entry into the Irish grocery market.
Then, Lidl opened more stores in 2000, in Limerick, Letterkenny, Mullingar, Athlone, Cavan, Ballinasloe and Portlaoise.

ENGLAND manager Thomas Tuchel is monitoring Myles Lewis-Skelly ahead of a potential call-up.
The Arsenal full-back, 18, has become a regular for Mikel Arteta‘s side of late.
With the Three Lions having struggled at left-back, Lewis-Skelly could be fast tracked into the senior squad.
Tuchel, 51, is said to hold some reservations over the Gunners teenager’s age and lack of experience.
Lewis-Skelly has not even yet debuted for England‘s Under-21s, let alone the senior side.
With Tuchel short at left-back, however, Lewis-Skelly has a chance to quickly becoming part of the squad.
According to The Times, Tuchel has twice personally checked in on the Arsenal academy graduate’s progress.
They add that England staff are “stepping up” their scouting of Lewis-Skelly.
Tuchel is set to take charge of the Three Lions for the first time against Albania at Wembley on March 21.
Three days later his side will host Latvia in a further World Cup qualifier.

Lewis-Skelly, who has made 10 Premier League appearances for Arsenal, will hope to be involved.
Luke Shaw has been England’s preferred left-back in recent years but has been dogged by injuries.
The Manchester United star has played just three times this season, but could be in line to return in the FA Cup this weekend.
Meanwhile, Ben Chilwell will hope to return to contention after joining Crystal Palace on loan from Chelsea.
Chilwell is a player Tuchel knows well from his time at Stamford Bridge.
Lewis Hall has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Newcastle and earned his first two caps earlier this season.
While Djed Spence has recently excelled at right and left-back for Tottenham.
Tuchel did not attend Arsenal’s clash with Manchester City on Sunday.
Instead he headed to Italy to watch AC Milan’s 1-1 draw with city rivals Inter.
The match was Kyle Walker’s Milan debut, while Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham were also in action.
SATURDAY’S singer Una Healy has taken on a new challenge to star in Celebrity Bear Hunt.
The Netflix reality show presented by Holly Willoughby will air on Wednesday February 5, 2025.
Ben Foden is a former international rugby player.
He retired in 2022, but during his career he won 34 caps for England and was a key player in England’s 2011 Six Nations victory.
Ben didn’t only make his mark in the world of rugby, but many will remember him as a contestant on The X Factor in October 2019.
The former rugby star was a member of the group, Try Star, alongside Levi Davis and Thom Evans.
In 2022, he competed on the fourteenth series of Dancing on Ice but Ben and his professional dancing partner, Robin Johnstone were the first couple to be eliminated.
Ben now works in real estate.
Una Healy is is an Irish singer-songwriter.
Born on October 10, 1981, she first stepped into the limelight when she represented Ireland with Brian Kennedy in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest with the song Every Song is a Cry for Love.
But she hit the big time when she joined the girl band known as The Saturdays.
Una has not only been a contestant on The Voice of Ireland, but a judge during seasons four and five also.
In 2012, Una married the England rugby star, Ben Foden.
The pair had their wedding in her native Ireland after four years of dating.
On July 27, 2018, it was revealed exclusively by the Sun Online that the pair split after Una confronted Ben about cheating rumours.
The break-up came just days before they were set to move to the US.
Una has two children with her ex-husband Ben.
Their daughter Aoife Belle was born on March 13, 2012.
Their son Tadhg arrived on February 2, 2015.
After her divorce she dated Irish hurler David Breen for a while.
Una is now dating the former Irish National Hunt jockey, Aidan Coleman.
The Saturdays singer told the Irish Sun: ‘He’s a great guy and I’m very happy.
Adding of how they met: “He reached out to me and we met up and clicked.
“He’s such a kind and great person – I love him.”

EIGHT flying cars could soon take to the skies – from a lifesaving drone-like helicopter to a Batmobile EV fighter jet.
Manufacturing giants have been working on developing flying cars, officially called VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircrafts, for several decades.
In 2022, Alef Aeronautics launched the first electric version, or eVTOL aircraft – called “Model A”.
And now, the world’s biggest car brands are jumping on the trend too – with eight airborne cars almost ready to beat the traffic in style.
Chinese start-up Xpeng AeroHT has already unveiled its very own foldable drone-like helicopter.
The eVTOL is stowed in the boot of a huge car – called the Land Aircraft Carrier.
The futuristic combo was unveiled at CES 2025 – and pre-orders currently stand at around 3,000.
It’s due to go into mass production later this year before coming to customers in 2026.
But it won’t come cheap with a price tag somewhere “below $300,000”, according to TechCrunch.
Luxury German manufacturer Porsche is also set to throw its hat in the eVTOL ring – with a concept first created back in 2019.
The prototype, conceived in collaboration with aircraft giant Boeing, looked a lot like the iconic Batmobile – with an all-black carbon-fibre design.
It had space for two passengers – and could even have an auto-pilot function.
Plus, it featured a rapid-efficiency battery pack and novel, bendable wings.
Neither brand has given an update on the status of the contraption – but punters are hoping it’ll still hit the market in the foreseeable future.
The Porsche eVTOL isn’t the only Batman-inspired flying car to be unveiled.
French car giant Renault showcased its similar looking Filante Record 2025 last month, described by the carmaker as “a laboratory on wheels”.
Next up is BMW’s Skai eVTOL contraption – designed by the brand’s Designworks division.
It has an impressive top speed of 118mph – powered by six hydrogen-run electric motors.
US-based manufacturer Alaka’i paired up with Designworks to create the innovate model – which is expected to go for 400 miles at a time.
Skai also has a three-tier safety system – meaning there’s no need to panic if one of the motors gives out.
And, as a last resort, it can even deploy its own parachute.
With its ever-developing eVTOL model, the Japanese heavyweight hopes to cut down travel times from five hours on the road to 2.5 hours in the sky.
Its concept – designed to emulate an F1-style experience in the air – has 10 rotors and can do around 250 miles.
The Toyota Joby, which has already undergone extensive checking, reaches a whopping airspeed of 250mph.
The Japanese brand has poured almost a billion pounds into the project – and has now set its sights on increasing the Joby’s vertical capability to 10,000ft.
At Stage Four of certification, this one could be taking the skies sometime soon.
Hyundai’s design supremo Luc Donckerwolke has described this invention as “the true representation of auto meets aero”.
It has eight motors and an aerodynamic V-tail – and can cruise at 120mph for 40 miles.
And despite its powerhouse credentials, the brand claims it’ll be as quiet as a dishwasher.
The Midnight is an all-electric eVTOL created by Archer Aviation in collaboration with manufacturer Stellantis.
The company aims to produce two vehicles per month, starting soon – increasing to two a day by 2030.
It has been designed with the aim of taking punters short distances, such as across cities – with the battery only lasting around 100 miles.
Finally, Suzuki’s two-passenger SkyDrive is set to debut in Osaka, Japan later this year.
It features 12 motors and can do about 25 miles so far, with a top speed of 62mph.
AN ambitious tech firm is looking to transform the camping industry with a futuristic-looking, all-electric caravan.
Little-known firm Pebble, based in California, US, has revealed the Flow – a caravan that boasts an innovative design and advanced technology that’s a far cry from traditional caravans.
The Pebble Flow features an aerodynamic and minimalist exterior, while its high-tech systems are controlled via smart app controls.
Measuring 7.6 metres in length, with a shape that makes it 300 per cent more streamlined than a conventional caravan, the Flow’s primary aim is to improve energy consumption and range.
Inside, it features a well-thought-out layout that offers plenty of space and light – helped by the large windows that provide a 270-degree view, including one that opens out to allow easy access to the outside.
The kitchen area is equipped with a range of modern appliances, such as an induction hob, microwave, and fridge.
At the rear, a double bed can convert into a compact desk, complete with USB-C ports that are perfect for those working on the go.
Additionally, owners can even pay a little extra for a Starlink internet connection, which allows them to stay connected even in the most remote locations.
Powered by a 45 kWh LFP battery, the Flow can run for up to seven days self-sufficiently, with solar cells on the roof providing a continuous supply of energy.
It also acts as a charging station for electric vehicles, making it the perfect companion for an EV on the go.
Perhaps most striking is the Flow’s driving assistance tech, which allows the caravan to partially drive itself thanks to two electric motors.
This means autonomous hitching and manoeuvring can be controlled at the touch of a button.
It even features a ‘Magic Hitch’ system that allows it to dock automatically with the towing vehicle.
Currently only priced in the US, the Flow starts at $109,500, which is roughly £88,000.
Adding the optional ‘Magic Pack’, which includes the two drive motors, raises the price to $125,000, or £100,000.
This comes as, earlier this month, we revealed that legendary designers Pininfarina are to launch their own futuristic caravan.
The Italian design house has recently showcased concept designs for its AI Transformer Home Trailer, or ‘AI-THt’.
This sleek design, created as part of Pininfarina’s partnership with AC Future – an American firm that builds “sustainable, transformer homes” – functions as a towable ‘home trailer’, a static ‘home unit’, and even a ‘drivable home’.
Like the Flow, the drivable version is equipped with self-driving technology, although the firm has yet to reveal any specific details of the automated driving system.
Additionally, they have not disclosed any figures regarding range or performance.
