CONOR McCARTHY’S spot-kick sent Monaghan on their way to an opening-day NFL Division 2 win over Cavan.
The Farney were dealt a blow last week when Conor McManus called time on his inter-county career.
Gerard Smith scraps for a loose ball with Ryan Wylie during the Farney’s 2-22 to 0-20 success
But a superstar remains in the form of goalie Rory Beggan — who booted three two-pointers, showing the new rules will suit him down to the ground.
Monaghan ultimately ran out eight-points winners over Cavan at Kingspan Breffni Park.
The game was an entertaining one as both teams served up a treat with the new rules on show.
Gabriel Bannigan — in charge of Monaghan for the first time in the league — conducted matters on the sideline.
And they responded with a clinical display, even without McManus in attack.
Cavan were up for the fight but they were on the back foot from early on after McCarthy’s penalty inside just two minutes.
That effort handed the Farney a one-point lead at the break as they played into a strong wind.
There were poor conditions underfoot too though players made little of it.
Cavan bravely fought their game of catch-up.
But with Ryan McAnespie and Gavin McPhillips on song, Monaghan rammed home their advantage with a second goal from David Garland three minutes into the second half.
The dynamic Dara McVeety led a Cavan fightback in the final quarter as the Blues hit four points without reply.
That cut Monaghan’s lead to six points with seven minutes of normal time left to play.
But Cavan missed too many chances on the night — with at least three goal opportunities left behind them.
And Monaghan never looked like losing down the stretch with Jack McCarron nailing a peach at the death to seal the deal in the local derby.

LOVE Island had its own fight night as one duo squared up over an All Stars girl.
Tension between the lads erupted on Friday night and the Islanders were forced to pull them apart after the war of words.
A huge spat will break out in the Love Island All Stars villa, The Sun can revealWe can report how Luca Bish is at the heart of the latest villa spatErotemeHe is called out by Scott Thomas for a comment he makes about Tina StinnesEroteme
In scenes that may feature in tonight’s ITV2 show, the row began after Scott Thomas, 36, took offence at something Luca Bish, 25, said about Tina Stinnes, 29.
Scott leapt to his partner’s defence and the rumble began.
A source said: “It didn’t get physical but Scott and Luca were squaring up to each other and in each other’s faces.
“Producers didn’t have to step in because the other Islanders pulled them apart.
“It all came to a head on Friday night. Luca said something about Tina that Scott didn’t like and it all kicked off.
“After the others broke it up, the tension continued all night and a few more cross words were shared.”
When Tina arrived as a bombshell this week, Luca and Scott both pursued her but, despite sharing a snog with the former fishmonger, the Made in Chelsea girl chose to recouple with Scott.
Since then their relationship has gone from strength to strength and they’re now one of the strongest couples in the All Stars villa.
The source added: “It looks like Luca is jealous of Scott and Tina cos he can’t seem to stop making these little comments.
“It might just be his sense of humour but it didn’t land well with Scott.”

GARY NEVILLE has lashed out at Cole Palmer for his behaviour after Chelsea’s loss at Manchester City.
The Blues collapsed to a 3-1 loss at the Etihad despite taking an early lead through Noni Madueke.
AFPSky pundit Gary Neville has hit out at Cole Palmer following Chelsea’s loss to Man City[/caption]

https://twitter.com/SkySportsPL/status/1883261330603246030
Palmer joined Chelsea from City in September 2023 in a £42.5million deal.
The 22-year-old has gone on to become an England regular since leaving the Etihad for regular football.
Following the Blues’ defeat on Saturday night, City boss Pep Guardiola singled out Palmer for a chat.
The pair were seen laughing and joking together on the field after Palmer’s second return to City since his big-money move.
Sky pundit Neville was not impressed though – and insisted any such reunion should have happened behind closed doors.
Neville told Sky Sports: “[Palmer] didn’t do enough out on that pitch in the second half.
“He’s an amazing player, absolutely brilliant.
“But those Chelsea fans that have travelled today, 3,000 to 4,000 over in that far corner, they wanted better than that.
“They don’t really want to see you conversing with the opposition manager and smiling at the end of game.”

The pair were seen sharing a joke before walking towards the tunnels at the Etihad.
And Neville believes it was a power move from Guardiola – who “played” his former star.
Neville continued: “He was smiling with him – Pep Guardiola does that.
“Cole, you’re being played, you’re being played here.
“I’m not being old school here. But there was something about that when I thought, Pep Guardiola is playing you here.
“I know he’s had him [at City], but he didn’t play him here and he sold him.”
One fan agreed on X: “It’s such a double standard that people just let Pep always do this. He never does it after a defeat too.”
Another said: “It’s the way Pep always stands in front of the player to prevent them from just walking off the pitch, making sure the camera gets a chance to close in on them. It’s embarrassing.”
While a third countered: “What’s wrong with that, he used to be his manager.”
Following Saturday’s loss, Chelsea have now won just one of their last five Premier League games.
They have slipped back to sixth, with City replacing them in the top four.

“It will take some time to complete and I appeal for the patience of the public.
“Power company staff and our public servants are working at speed to restore services.”
Cops were called to around 1,900 weather-related incidents and Scottish Southern Electricity Networks said it has received 52,000 calls — two months’ worth — in just 24 hours and warned it could take days for power to come back on.
Aileen Rourke, distribution director for SP Energy Networks Scotland, said: “Storm Éowyn is one of the worst to hit Scotland in decades.
“The force of the wind has caused significant damage which, unfortunately, means in some areas it could take longer to restore power.”
