I was baffled when Cristiano Ronaldo arrived at Man Utd – then he left me with cuts and grazes on my leg in training
CRISTIANO RONALDO’S former Manchester United team-mate has lifted the lid on playing against him in training.
Phil Bardsley had many a battle against the Portuguese legend as both were youngsters breaking into the side in 2003.

Ronaldo joined from Sporting for £12million earlier that year after catching the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson in a pre-season friendly against United.
On his arrival at Carrington, Bardsley told talkSPORT: “He’d come in with his quirky little jumper on, with these little braids coming down, and everyone was like, ‘Who’s this kid?’
“The first-team players were aware because he played against them in a pre-season game and he was magnificent in that game.
“But when he came to the club, he was very slight, not much English at the time, but you could see glimpses of something.”
Full-back Bardsley often went head-to-head with Ronaldo in training to get him up to the speed of the Premier League.
The 39-year-old, who played 18 times for United, revealed: “It’d be Cristiano taking me on and it’d be a case of me improving one-on-one defending, while he improves his finishing and his attacking play.
“But we’d just come off and there’d be cuts and grazes down your shins and on your ankles when you try to stop shots and I’m blocking his shots. We both have cuts on our legs from it.
“It was tough and you know what? People talk about him and probably in his early stage he went down too much, which is probably right.

“For a Portuguese player coming to a new country, a physical league… but he was tough.
“His battles over the years with Ashley Cole were, from a neutral point of view, you just couldn’t wait for it.
“It was just tit for tat for 90 minutes and it was great competition, great to watch.
“But I think over his career as well, those sort of periods helped him become tougher and stronger.”
Ronaldo, who celebrates his 40th birthday today, went on to make 346 appearances for United over two spells, scoring 145 goals.
And, overall, having hit the back of the net 923 times for club and country, Ronaldo is convinced he is the GOAT.
He said: “I am the best player ever, I believe that.
“I’m fast, I’m strong, [I score] with my header, with the left, no one has ever been more complete than me.
“You may prefer Pele, Messi, Maradona, I understand and respect that.
“If I finish on 920, 925 goals… it doesn’t matter to me at all. I am the best in history. Period.
“If I reach 1,000 goals, great. If not, that’s fine too. Numbers don’t lie.”
As for Bardsley, after leaving United he went on to play for Sunderland, Stoke and Burnley.

Teen told he was coughing up ‘pints’ of blood due to a stomach ulcer caused by kebabs – ‘excessive vaping’ was to blame
A “TRAUMATISED” teen was told he was coughing up “pints” of blood due to a stomach ulcer after eating too many kebabs – but he later discovered it was lung damage from “excessive vaping”.
Jayden Richardson says he took up e-cigarettes aged 12 to “fit in” would smoke the equivalent of around 50 cigarettes a day.

However the 17-year-old was “terrified” when he began coughing up blood on the last day of his family holiday in Turkey in August 2024.
After flying home the next day, he was rushed to hospital where his mum Elita Richardson says doctors assumed he had a stomach ulcer.
Mum Elita admits she thought it could be linked to the drinks, greasy food and having a kebab “every night” he’d had on holiday.
However, the family were “shocked” when an endoscopy revealed the teenager had “severe” lung damage that doctors say was caused by his vaping addiction.
Despite being determined to give up e-cigarettes, he “stupidly” used a vape months later while celebrating his birthday on 10 January and began coughing up blood again.
This was just days before Hollyoaks star Paul Danan tragically passed away – months after being hospitalised for “excessive vaping”.
Taking to Facebook, Elita, 43, shared a post warning others to “please consider vaping because you never think it’s going to happen to you”.
Jayden is now awaiting a CT scan and welcomes the ban of disposable vapes in June 2025 vowing to “never” use one again.
Jayden, who lives in Shifnal, Shropshire, said: “I was terrified. I never thought vaping could cause all this.
“It started off in Turkey. The night before I had a bit of chest pain but didn’t really think much of it whatsoever. I woke up the next morning, had a quick go on my vape and just as if I had a bit of a chesty cough.
“I went to cough a few times and it felt a bit phlegmy so I went to spit it out. I saw that it was blood and this put me in shock. I didn’t know what to do myself.
“I got hold of my mum and she said ‘if it gets any worse I’ll come straight to you’ because she was out at breakfast.
“About five minutes goes by and I’m still coughing up little bits at the start. She comes over and the first time I was coughing it wasn’t really bad at all.
“But a couple hours later I had a few drinks and stuff and I got into the swimming pool and as soon as I got into the swimming pool I’m just coughing up loads of blood into my hands. So I was pulled up out of the swimming pool by this Turkish fella.
“Gone straight to the toilet and I’m coughing up pint-loads of blood. It scared me to see, especially at a young age.
It was traumatic. That was probably going on for a good 10 minutes of me coughing up pretty heavy blood
Jayden Richardson
“It was traumatic. That was probably going on for a good 10 minutes of me coughing up pretty heavy blood.”
Jayden managed to fly home the next day but his dad rushed him to hospital after he started coughing up more blood at Birmingham airport.
His mum claims that doctors initially “fobbed him off” as having a stomach ulcer after she told them he was “throwing up” blood and nothing showed up on a lung X-ray.
However, a week later an endoscopy revealed he had severe lung damage.
Elita said: “When I eventually got back he’d been in and out of hospital fobbing him off for a stomach ulcer.
“Because I was perceiving it as he was sicking it up but he was coughing it up. He was heaving. I was thinking ‘I let him have a couple of drinks on holiday, he’s been eating greasy food, he was having a kebab every night’.
The 4 horrifying things that can happen to your body after vaping
VAPES were once hailed as miracle devices to help adults ditch cigarettes.
But while the devices don’t carry the same risks as tobacco, experts have warned that vaping might not be so harmless after all.
Here are five ways vaping could damage young users bodies:
1. It could slow down brain development
Vaping nicotine can permanently affect brain development in people under the age of 25, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
It said that nicotine consumed during teenage years can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control, as well as increase the risk of addiction.
2. It could lead to tooth decay
Dr Michael Heffernan, a dentist at The Wessex Dental Specialist Care, said most vapes contain dangerous chemical that can harm your teeth and lead to decay.
Puffing on the devices could also lead to mouth dryness, creating an environment in which harmful bacteria can grow.
3. It could damage heart health
However, some of the chemicals found in vapes can be damaging to the heart, with the American Heart Association (AHA) stating that vaping is “as harmful to the body’s cardiovascular systems as cigarettes”.
4. It could cause lung disease
Vaping from a young age could leave children with breathing difficulties, with paediatric respiratory consultant Dr Mike McKean saying he’d seen reports of people developing lung disease related to vaping.
Researchers from the US also found that young people who vape are more at risk of bronchitis, inflammation of the airways, and shortness of breath.

“They sent him for lung X-rays. Nothing was showing up on the X-rays. They were then saying ‘is it severe nose bleeds’? Because the blood was coming out of his nose as well. He’d never had a nose bleed.
“I think they were going through the options of everything not thinking that a kid of his age would have severe lung damage.
“A week later that’s when he had the camera down. The consultant said he’s never seen so much lung damage on a kid. It’s awful. ‘Excessive vaping’, that’s what they said. It was a shock.
“It’s awful. I’m grateful we realised when we did. I was fearful if it had gone on any longer it could’ve been worse.
“What makes it worse is when it happened again, the bloke from Hollyoaks passed away [and his health issues have been linked to] excessive vaping.”
Jayden was given medication and decided to stop vaping so the bleeding stopped days later.
![A mother and her teenage son pose for a photo.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/traumatised-teen-told-coughing-pints-969334084.jpg?strip=all&w=578)

However, the teen admitted he used an e-cigarette months later during his birthday weekend because he thought “the damage was done” but ended up coughing up blood again and is now awaiting a CT scan.
Jayden said: “I ended up having another go on a vape. Stupidly I don’t really know what got into me. I wasn’t heavily using it but I was using it pretty frequently.
“I was just sitting in bed and literally had a cough. From the tone of cough it was, I could tell straight away it was going to be my blood. I went to spit out. It wasn’t too much blood but it still wasn’t nice to see. It was pretty stressful.
“I thought the damage was done and it would just heal itself and I thought that a few tokes on a vape wouldn’t affect me. But i was totally wrong and i cant believe how easily it was to get the damage done again.
“I’m feeling a lot of pain in the left side which I imagine could be my left lung. I get frequent pain. I could be sitting here just doing nothing and it could be a sharp stabbing pain. It hurts when I cough. It’s terrible.”
Smoking vs. vaping
VAPING has been touted as an effective tool to help people quit smoking.
Though vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking, the habit isn’t completely harmless and comes with its own set of risks.
The NHS only recommends it for adult smokers, to support quitting smoking.
GP and author Dr Philippa Kaye explained to The Sun that the differences between vaping and smoking – and whether one is better than the other – is “complicated”.
“In a nutshell, vaping is better than smoking, but breathing air is better than vaping at all.”
Vaping exposes users to far fewer toxins – and at lower levels – than smoking cigarettes.
Switching to vaping significantly reduces your exposure to toxins that can cause cancer, lung disease, and diseases of the heart and circulation like heart attack and stroke.
These diseases are not caused by nicotine, which is relatively harmless to health. But research has still linked vaping to a higher risk of failure and lung disease.
Health risks of cigarettes
- Smokers are more likely than nonsmokers to develop heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer
- Smokers are at greater risk for diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels
- Smoking can cause lung disease by damaging your airways and the small air sacs
- Smoking can cause cancer almost anywhere in your body
- It affects overall health too, such as your mouth, eyes, immune system and fertility
Health risks of vaping
- They can cause side effects such as throat and mouth irritation, headache, cough and feeling sick
- They could lead to tooth decay
- They could damage heart health
- They could cause lung disease
- They could slow brain development

He admitted he would get through one 10ml bottle of vape juice every two to three days which is the equivalent to around 50 cigarettes daily.
Jayden said: “Everyone was doing it around me. I felt like it was kind of to fit in but it just felt normal to do it.
“I was vaping everyday. I wouldn’t really put it down to be honest. It’s just a bad habit really. Once you start, obviously it’s highly addictive, it’s hard to stop.
“When the disposables were more popular, you don’t know what’s actually in them. You find fake ones. None of it’s good but they especially are really bad for you. All sorts of chemicals.
“You don’t know what they’re really putting in. They’re dangerous and no one should touch them. They should be banned in every country.
“If I could go back to that moment when I first started I’d tell myself ‘never to touch one of them’. It’s crazy how dangerous they are and what they can actually do to the human body. You don’t realise it when you do it. It just affects you in the long run. I would never touch one.”
Heartbroken friends of Carlow crash victims in ‘great sorrow’ tribute as they band together in bid to support families
THE heartbroken friends of two men who died in a Carlow crash have launched an appeal to support their families.
Bhargav Chitturi, 24, and Suresh Cherukuri, 23, lost their lives on the N80 at Graiguenaspiddoge on January 31.
The Audi A6 the SETU Carlow students were travelling in collided with trees in Leagh, Rathoe at around 1.15am that morning.
The pals, who had been living in Hannover Road, also Co Carlow, were the driver and a back seat passenger in the vehicle.
Two other people, a man and a woman, were also in the car and are being treated in hospital for serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The tragic deaths of the two Indian students sent shock waves through the local community.
The grief was further compounded as the accident occurred on the first anniversary of the deaths of Katie Graham, 19, Daryl Culbert, 21 and Michael Kelly, 25.
The three young people lost their lives in a collision on the same stretch of road last year.
And now pals of Bhargav Chitturi and Suresh Cherukuri have launched a GoFundMe appeal as they “aim to unite in support of their families”.
The heartbreaking message posted alongside the fundraiser reads: “We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Bhargav Chitturi and Suresh Cherukuri.
“It is with great sorrow that we announce the tragic car accident on 31 Jan at Carlow, that claimed the lives of these two Indian students from SETU Carlow.”
It continued: “In this challenging period, we aim to unite in support of their families to help cover funeral costs and other financial challenges they may encounter.
“We encourage you to donate or share this campaign to assist their families during this trying time. Thank you for your generosity and support.
“To help their both families, we set up our target for 50K, but I have got multiple requests to extend the target for 100k and we really appreciate everyone name by name who contributed for this cause.
“If you feel like contributing more, you’re more than welcome to do so.
“Assured that every cent will be given to their families & the victims suffering from the accident.”
And 15 per cent of funds raised will be allocated to the surviving victims of the crash who suffered serious injuries.
The fundraiser for the crash victims has already raised €66,242 in the five days since it was set up.
Organisers have disabled further donations on the fundraiser for the moment after reaching the target goal.
‘BRIGHT YOUNG SOULS’
Tributes have poured in for the two young men in their 20s alongside donations.
Ireland Telugu Samajam, a non-profit organisation on behalf of Telugu people residing in Ireland, made a €1,200 donation.
They said: “We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic loss of the bright young souls. Our hearts go out to their family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
“Gone far too soon, they will always be remembered for the joy, kindness, and energy they brought into the lives of those around them.
“May their souls rest in peace, and may their loved ones find the strength to cope with this unimaginable loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.”
Another person wrote: “Our prayers for both families”.

Bianca attempted to escape Reiss’ (Jonny Freeman) clutches as well as get her sister off the hook as she was on trial for the murder of his wife, Debbie.
She recorded a fake confession video and planned to run away, but instead Reiss has kept her as a prisoner.
Using Jack’s connections to the police, Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) manages to get hold of Bianca’s recording on EastEnders.
She will be left completely transfixed by what she watches, as she already had suspicions something wasn’t right.
However, Reiss tries to convince her to let it lie, as he cannot have her finding out the full truth.
After a run in with Mo (Laila Morse) in the Square, Sonia takes a moment to herself in the laundrette.
However, her health will soon take a serious turn and she will have to go to hospital on the BBC serial drama.
At the time, Reiss makes his way to the lockup and will be left absolutely incredulous with what he discovers.
He will rush out of the location as news of Sonia’s condition reaches him, but she’s sent home to rest.
Once they are both back at number 25, Reiss will try to make an excuse to leave, as he needs to go back to the lockup and deal with Bianca.
Sonia will then decide to delete Bianca’s video, but she then makes a chilling discovery and will be completely stopped in her tracks.
Reiss will then arrive back home with more excuses about his whereabouts, as Sonia is left shaken.
A tense showdown will then take place as Sonia confronts her troubled fiance.
She then goes to leave the house, but Reiss will physically block her departure.
Will Sonia make it out the house alive?

Sonia Fowler has featured in EastEnders since 1993, and after starring in thousands of episodes, has been featured in storylines ranging from teenage pregnancy to a cancer scare. Here are some of her biggest.
- Teen Pregnancy and Birth of Chloe Jackson (1999-2000)
Sonia discovered she was pregnant at the age of 15. Viewers were shocked by the sudden birth, as the teen went into labour without even realising she was pregnant. Martin Fowler turned out to be Chloe’s father. Sonia initially decided to give the girl up for adoption. - Death of her boyfriend (2002)
Sonia’s boyfriend, Jamie Mitchell, was hit by a car driven by her baby’s father. Jamie had just bought an engagement ring for his girlfriend before being struck down by the thoughtless Martin, who was texting while driving. Although the Jamie was rushed to hospital, docs said his liver was irreparably damaged, and he ended up dying with Sonia by his side. - Marriage to Martin Fowler and Family Tensions (2004-2007)
In a shock twist Sonia went on to marry the man responsible for her previous boyfriend’s death. Their relationship was marred by conflicts and infidelity, and they went on to split up after just three years. At one point in their marriage Sonia was taken hostage by Sarah Cairns, who became obsessed with Martin after he flirted with her during a drunken night out. The couple went through struggles again when the adoptive parents of their daughter were killed in a car crash, leaving them responsible for Rebecca. Because of the tension in their relationship Sonia ended up cheating on her husband with one of her co-workers, nurse Naomi Julien. - Custody Battle for Rebecca (2005-2007)
Baby Chloe, who was renamed Rebecca, was kidnapped by her mum early in life before being returned to her adoptive parents. After Neil and Sue Miller died they awarded Martin full custody of the child because of Sonia’s extra-marital affair. The mum was left distraught to be cut out of her daughter’s life. - Gastric Band Surgery and Weight Struggles (2014-2015)
Sonia became insecure about her weight and arranged to have a secret gastric band surgery in Bulgaria. She later collapsed at an exercise class after suffering complications from the operation. - Discovery of Bex’s Suicide Attempt (2019)
Sonia’s daughter Rebecca tried to take her own life in a heartbreaking storyline which left viewers in tears. She found Bex unconscious after taking an overdose, and was devastated. Sonia blamed herself for pushing her daughter to breaking point, as she had tried to force her into going to Oxford despite Bex saying she didn’t feel ready for university.

Love Island fans work out steamy reason why bombshell Samie is causing chaos in villa
LOVE Island viewers claim they’ve cracked why bombshell Samie Elishi’s arrival has caused so much chaos for Luca Bish and Grace Jackson.
The villa couple looked destined for the final until brunette beauty Samie strutted in and caught the Brighton boy’s eye.
![Luca Bish and Samie Elishi kissing during a Spin the Bottle game on Love Island.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/47e500e2-c099-4565-892d-712189efd836.jpg?strip=all&w=960)

During a game of spin the bottle last night, he gave Samie a lingering kiss after Grace explicitly asked him not to, causing the latter to share some harsh words.
Viewers think the reason Grace is so jealous of Samie is because she has fallen hard for Luca, and they think the pairing are “having sex every night”.
Writing on a fan forum, one person posted: “Grace and Luca are basically closed off, as they’ve told each other they are all for each other and no one else.
“They’ve been having sex every night. They are intimate. This is at a level we only ever sometimes see with couples towards the very end of the show.”
The content shocked some who didn’t believe the pair were that intimate.
One asked: “When are these islanders discussing having sex with each other ??? I have missed all of this.”
Former islander Scott Thomas practically said as much during an interview following his exit from the villa.
A fan who watched it said: “Scott basically said on the morning-after pod they have a circus tent up every night, or something like that, or that’s what Grace and Luca called it.”
Another claimed the islanders can choose if they want their sexual antics broadcast or not.
“It’s been made pretty obvious on the show if you watch the bit where they go around to each bed at night,” wrote a fan. “I think they’ll no longer say it on the show if the islanders don’t say it themselves but you can tell when they do that round up.”
We previously revealed Samie had her eyes on Luca before she arrived on the show.
She also said she wasn’t afraid to steal him from Grace.
When asked who she hoped to strike up a romance with, she told us: “Luca,” and added, “I feel like he’s very much a bit of me looks wise and watching him on this series, I like that he’s in touch with his emotional side.”
She went on: “He’s been the voice of reason throughout the whole Villa, I’m always saying ‘thank god someone said that…finally!’.”
Samie was then asked about how she would feel to step on Grace‘s toes.
“Him and Grace look like they’re going fine, but you can’t believe everything you see,” Samie replied.
“The game is the game, this is what happens.”
Former islander Georgia Steel also previously predicted that Samie could turn Luca’s head, telling us that she was his type.

Discussing how he can find a balance between the “paradise” and “hell” of being a football manager, Mourinho claimed that he is able to enter the “twilight zone”.
However, his translator was left confused by the Portuguese gaffer’s accent and asked him to clarify if he had used the term “toilet zone”.
Mourinho quickly corrected his colleague and gave him a loving slap on the shoulder in the process.
The funny gaffe left the press room in stitches, while fans online were loving the typically Mourinho moment.
On social media, one fan wrote: “Mourinho’s reaction is hilarious”.
While another added: “I love him so much”.
A third commented: “Jose is the gift that keeps on giving”.

And a fourth posted: “This is hilarious”.
Mourinho began his coaching career as a translator himself.
The 62-year-old acted as the Portuguese translator for legendary manager Sir Bobby Robson during his time as Sporting Lisbon and Porto boss in the 90s.
Even without any experience as a coach, Mourinho left Robson impressed with his knowledge of the game.
He once said: “He’d [Mourinho] come back and hand me a dossier that was absolutely first class.
“[They were] As good as anything I’d received. Here he was, in his early-30s, never been a player or a coach to speak of, giving me reports as good as anything I ever got.”
The pair enjoyed a remarkable success after Robson made Mourinho his assistant at Porto, reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League in the 1993-94 season, only to be toppled by Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona.
They won consecutive Portuguese titles in 1995 and 1996, and when the Dutch legend walked away from the Camp Nou that year – Robson was the man they hired.
