Avalanche’s Potential Harry Potter RPG Could Be Successful Only If It Avoids the Suicide Squad and Gotham Knights Mistakes

It’s a known fact that Hogwarts Legacy, based on the Harry Potter franchise, was a smash hit. It was an open-world game that shipped over 30 million copies and established itself as one of the top sellers of the year.

It’s been a while since the release of Hogwarts Legacy, and gamers are busy wondering what’s coming next from Avalanche Software. While it’s confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is in development, rumors suggest that a Harry Potter online RPG is also in the works. However, if this game really wants to succeed, it must avoid making the same mistakes as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights.

Rumored Harry Potter RPG must learn from industry’s failures

Reputable insider X0LEAK, known for his leaks on Marvel Rivals, has taken it to Twitter/X and revealed that multiple job listings suggest that Avalanche is hiring to make an “online multiplayer RPG.” Considering the fact that Hogwarts Legacy wasn’t an online multiplayer RPG experience, it’s unlikely that these listings are related to the sequel.

That’s not all; according to the leaker, a survey was sent out for the upcoming playtesting sessions of the game. It looked for feedback on a number of things, such as whether menu-based lobbies or lobby-based lobbies worked better.

Considering the success of Hogwarts Legacy, it’s not really surprising that Avalanche is trying its hand with another Harry Potter game. As we still don’t have any official details, things could always change. However, if this online RPG is indeed a real project, it should learn from the failures of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights.

Both of these titles were supposed to be Warner Bros.’s top games. However, they didn’t live up to the expectations due to the poor implementation of live-service elements, terrible storytelling, and stale gameplay. Suicide Squad proved to be a $200 million blunder as it was just another live-service game that lacked a soul and proper gameplay.

On the other hand, the Gotham Knights didn’t have the depth and performance optimization that one would expect from the Batman games. Seriously, if Avalanche doesn’t closely study the failure of these games and make the right move, the rumored Harry Potter RPG could prove to be a flop.

Hogwarts Legacy sequel won’t be a live-service slop

Even though Avalanche hasn’t officially announced a Hogwarts Legacy sequel, there’s been some indication from WB Games leadership that the sequel might be loaded with some live-service elements. As you’d think, this didn’t go down well with the fans, who already despise such tactics.

However, it seems like WB Games is backtracking on this decision. New reports from Jason Schreier suggest that Hogwarts Legacy 2 won’t be a live-service game. Apparently, all the talks about adding live-service elements were just to appeal to shareholders and their profit interests.

It’s worth keeping in mind that Schreier doesn’t state that some multiplayer or live-service elements won’t be in the game; he suggests that it won’t be a live-service game. Again, it’s crucial to take everything with a grain of salt. Schreier is a reputable journalist, but WB Games could still change things in the end.

With that said, what would you like to see in a potential Harry Potter online RPG game? Let us know in the comments below.
