‘I feel so exposed’ – Mary McAleese blasts social media as she warns world is ‘nastier’

FORMER President Mary McAleese has slammed social media and warned the world has become a “nastier space”.

Patrick Kielty returned to Montrose tonight with a regular episode of The Late Late Show, after two weeks of specials.

Appearing alongside former RTE star Mary Kennedy, Mary McAleese discussed their friendship, the state of the world and the upcoming Irish Presidential election.

The two Marys are now hosts of The Changing Times podcast, and had a lot to say.

Mrs McAleese said: “Social media has just made dialog almost impossible.

“Everything is reduced to nasty little snide comments that you can fit into, whether it is 140 things on a what used to be called tweet.

“I don’t do tweets, or Twitter any of those things. I stay away from social media.”

Mrs McAleese admitted she hates social media sites, adding “I feel so exposed on them”.

She continued: “I think the world has become in terms of dialog, it’s just become a nastier space.

“Though, ironically, having said that, the place that you and I both come from, Northern Ireland- when I look at the two young women now who are First and Deputy First Minister, they’ve gone the other way.

“They smile at each other. They’re happy in each other’s company.

“Miles apart politically, political ambitions, very different attitudes. Very different, but they’re civil.

“And so there’s a kind of a civility now in Northern discourse that used to be absent, used to be very raw.

“Politics, I think, in certain parts of the world has gone very raw.”

Mrs McAleese discussed her hopes that the “ceasefire will hold”.

She said: “I look at what’s happening in the Middle East. These are neighbours.

“You and I know this, when you live in an environment where you’re always going to be neighbours to each other.

“You’d be better get on with each other, because if you don’t get on with each other, your children, in perpetuity, will never know peace.

“That’s what we lived with, you and I, that’s what we lived with in Northern Ireland.

“And I just look at that, and I hope and pray that some of these days, that the peace…

“For example, that the ceasefire will hold, and that the next phase will hold, and the phase after that will lead to the realisation that if you keep wanting 100 per cent of everything, then you end up with 100 per cent of nothing.

“Because that’s how we lived for a long time in Northern Ireland.”

‘NAGGING’

The 73-year-old praised the “extraordinary genius” John Hume for his single transferable speech.

She said: “He nagged us into the reality that if we didn’t compromise, we were always just going to live in misery.

“And it’s that here are neighbours in the Middle East, and the hatred is intense.

“Then sooner or later, that has got to go. It’s got to go, it’s got to be let go.

Mrs McAleese insisted there are people in the world “who want peace”.

She continued: “I mean to look at the people going back to their homes in Gaza today that aren’t there, actually, that aren’t there.

“And to think of the 40,000 who are dead, to think of those poor hostages, some of whom will never come home now because they’ve died in the meantime.

“But to look at the reconciliation when they meet their families, and the joy of love. If we can get to that.”

Mrs McAleese highlighted the lack of female representation in the new government.

She said: “There’s something systemic that we need to look at there.

“On the other hand, in every other area of life, every other profession, every other calling in life, women are little by little, chapter by chapter, writing new chapters.”

I burned my thumb on pan while cooking pasta on camping trip – then I was put in coma & my legs amputated

A MAN was put into a coma and had his legs amputated after burning his thumb on a frying pan.

Max Armstrong, 40, burnt himself while on holiday in December 2024 and “didn’t think much of the injury” it until it was too late.

The amputation took place on December 23 and took a total of three hours[/caption]

The Colorado native was camping with his friends at Kiowa, in the centre of the state, and was only trying to cook pasta when he sustained the injury.

Describing himself as constantly “being outdoors” Max had received scrapes, and cuts before and wasn’t too stressed about the burn.

Max said: “I grabbed a skillet wrong and my thumb touched the hot part, I could feel it burning as I moved it to the table but I didn’t want to drop it.

“After dinner, I cleaned up the burn, put a bandage on it and left it.

“Sadly, dinner was enough for the burn to get strep A.”

The business owner, from Franktown, said it was a hunting trip with friends that “turned into a bit of a nightmare.”

A few days after his injury, Max started to notice some terrifying symptoms.

His left leg became noticeably swollen, his toenails darkened and became purple, and he was overwhelmed by intense, agonising pain.

On the sixth day, he was rushed to the hospital and immediately diagnosed with sepsis – a life-threatening medical condition.

Sepsis can occur when the body’s immune system responds to an infection in an extreme and harmful way – even if it’s a seemingly small injury, like a frying pan burn.

In the hospital, Max’s eyes started to roll upwards and Doctors at AdventHealth Parker confirmed strep A bacteria and entered the burn, triggering sepsis.

“At this point, the burn on my thumb had become pretty ugly, it had turned black and looked like it was eating away at my thumb,” Max continued.

“The doctors were asking me lots of questions, but my eyes started rolling back in my head and I started talking nonsense.”

Due to the severity of his condition, he was placed in an induced coma for six days and moved to a better-equipped hospital.

His family were warned there was a chance he might not make it but to their relief on December 13 he woke up from his coma.

Max’s mother and his wife Megan were at the hospital to see him and were thrilled when he woke up.

He said: “My family was extremely happy, I could hear them cheering and then the nurses came in and started cleaning me up.”

Unfortunately, while in his coma the sepsis has continued to eat away at his feet and spread to his legs.

He said he remembers looking at his feet and to his horror, they were both completely black.

When someone’s limbs turn darker during sepsis, it can be because there has been a lack of oxygen in the area.

This can lead to tissue death and gangrene which, when severe, may require amputation.

Max went from camping with his friends to waking up in a hospital in Denver after a coma, only to be told both his legs needed to be removed.

The amputation took place on December 23, 2024, and took a total of three hours to complete.

Max added: “Initially when I woke up, I thought my legs were still there and then I came to realise that they weren’t.

“I felt down my leg and realised that my legs weren’t there, I asked the nurse and she confirmed that I had my legs amputated.

“She told me that my family was waiting for me and kept on reminding me of them which anchored me.”

The 40-year-old spent a 16 days in Sky Ridge Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation hospital recovering and being taught how to use a wheelchair – a device he would now depend on for the rest of his life.

He went to physical rehabilitation classes three times a day learnt crucial upper body exercises.

“Now I am in a wheelchair my shoulder and triceps are my lifeline,” he explained.

After enduring a long and harrowing journey, Max was finally able to leave on January 29, 2025, and is adapting to life as an amputee.

Since his story has been shared, Max has received an enormous amount of support and thousands of dollars have been raised on his behalf.

The GoFundMe is aimed to help with the long road to recovery and Max has shared his appreciation online to anyone who has donated.

On the site, he wrote: “I’ve been humbled and overjoyed at the contributions to my GoFundMe.

“You all truly are heroes in my journey to walk and hike again.

“I cannot begin to express how much it means to me.”

Alleged victim of student accused raping ten women told police he dragged her back to flat

AN alleged victim of a PhD student accused of drugging and raping ten women told police that he dragged her back to his flat, a jury heard.

She said she was drinking wine with Zhenhao Zou when she began to find him odd and wanted to leave.

In her police interview played to the jury, she said the Chinese student dragged her back by her clothes, before pushing her to drink vodka.

She claims he then raped her while she was unconscious at his flat in Elephant and Castle, South London.

She said: “I had no strength to fight him off.”

Zou, 27, is accused of drugging the women and filming himself raping them.

Police have identified two of ten alleged victims, Inner London crown court heard.

He denies 11 counts of rape plus other sex and drug charges.

The sexual predator student drugged and raped ten unconscious women then took photos to keep as souvenirs, a court heard.

Zou is accused of “stupefying” the women using vast amounts of alcohol or drugs to render them incapacitated.

The 27-year-old would then carry out sex attacks, which he filmed to keep as “souvenirs”, jurors were told.

Inner London Crown Court heard Zou would watch the videos back for his “own private sexual gratification”.
