Car Auctions: How To Nab A Bargain
Car auctions are a way to sell vehicles based on a bidding system with the highest offer securing the deal.
Auctions aren’t restricted to the rich and famous as thousands of cars are sold at motor auctions in the UK each week.
Here’s what you need to know before attending an auction:
Be prepared: Do your research on the car you would like to purchase beforehand.
Check the car: Cars will usually be lined up before the start, so make sure to arrive early to inspect the desired car thoroughly.
Have a back-up: Be ready for disappointment as your desired motor may be sold to someone else and select a few back-ups.
Be realistic: Realise that there won’t be a “perfect” car at an auction and adjust expectations accordingly.
Set a budget: It is easy to overspend in the heat of the moment during bidding. Ensure you have set a budget and do not go over it.
Key phrases to look out for:
‘No major mechanical faults’ – suggests that there shouldn’t be any issues with the car’s drivetrain, gearbox, suspension, or engine.
‘Specified faults’ – the auctioneer will read out specific faults.
‘Sold as seen’ – the vehicle is sold with any problems it may have. The auction company will rarely entertain complaints regarding the mechanical or cosmetic condition of these vehicles after sale.
‘Sold with a warranted mileage’ – The car is being offered based on the report, which confirms the mileage through an independent check.
He told his followers: “We think we’ve been scammed not only once but possibly twice.
“Once by a customer who scammed somebody with their ID to buy a car but the second time quite possibly by the car provider.”
Mike explained how his One Automotive group had advertised a white VW Golf Mk7 GTD for just over £10,000.
An interested driver rang up and promptly offer to buy it and arranged a collection service to pick up the vehicle at Mike’s Leamington Spa base.
Mike admitted that before letting the vehicle go they ran various checks on the buyer’s personal information to process the sale.
Everything appeared to be legitimate and the courier then arrived to pick up the vehicle.
But later, Mike was contacted by his bank who revealed the person charged for the vehicle had disputed the sale.
He explained: “He’s been scammed by somebody who has stolen his ID and stolen his card details and used that to buy a car from me and James at One Automotive.”
Mike finished by offering a warning to anyone selling their car. He said: “If you’re going to sell a car make sure the customer is there in person with ID and with a drivers’ license.
“Check the address, check where they live, and check everything.”

Heart-healthy living includes getting regular exercise, managing stress, limiting alcohol and red meat, practicing good sleep hygiene, and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels. But one practice that’s equally as important yet often overlooked is dental care. New research suggests that certain oral hygiene habits can boost your cardiovascular health, specifically when it comes to stroke risk.
Research found that oral hygiene can impact your cardiovascular health.
Much research has been conducted on oral hygiene and cardiovascular health.
Colgate explains it well: "As the Cleveland Clinic reports, research has shown that, if the oral bacteria responsible for gum disease find a way into the bloodstream, they may cause C-reactive protein levels to rise. This elevation can indicate inflammation in the blood vessels and, ultimately, signal an increase in that person's risk of stroke and heart disease."
A new preliminary study presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference indicates that adults can lower their risk of stroke with good oral hygiene. As for which habit (flossing, brushing, or visiting the dentist) has a more significant impact on cardiovascular health, the study’s author analyzed the oral hygiene behaviors of more than 6,000 adults.
"A recent global health report revealed that oral diseases—such as untreated tooth decay and gum disease—affected 3.5 billion people in 2022, making them the most widespread health conditions," said study lead author Souvik Sen, MD, in a press release. "We aimed to determine which oral hygiene behavior—dental flossing, brushing or regular dentist visits—has the greatest impact on stroke prevention."
Daily flossing was linked to lower risks of stroke and irregular heartbeat.
Not flossing can contribute to built-up bacteria and inflammation in and around the gums, increasing your stroke risk, per the study’s findings.
An at-home oral hygiene assessment found that 4,092 of the participants had no stroke prevalence, and 4,050 had no history of AFib (an irregular heartbeat). The common denominator? They all regularly flossed.
Participants were monitored over the course of 25 years, during which time flossing was linked with a 22 percent lower risk of ischemic stroke (when blood flow is cut off to the brain), 44 percent lower risk of cardioembolic stroke (when a blood clot forms in the heart), and 12 percent lower risk of AFib.
"Oral health behaviors are linked to inflammation and artery hardening. Flossing may reduce stroke risk by lowering oral infections and inflammation and encouraging other healthy habits," explained Sen. "Many people have expressed that dental care is costly. Flossing is a healthy habit that is easy to adopt, affordable and accessible everywhere."
However, a 2016 CDC survey found that over one-third of Americans never floss.
"When you're brushing, you're only getting certain surfaces of the tooth," Dee Dee Meevasin, DMD, owner of Dee for Dentist, previously shared with Best Life. "Flossing gets into those crevices where a brush cannot reach—under the gums and between the teeth—to mechanically remove bacteria."
Routine flossing not only boosts dental health (preventing cavities and gum disease), but your cardiovascular health, too.
Looking towards the future, American Heart Association EPI and Stroke Council member Daniel T. Lackland, DrPH, said he would like to see researchers dive into the correlation between specific dental health practices and other risk factors, including diet, physical activity, nicotine consumption, sleep, blood pressure, body mass, and more. Lackland was not involved in the study.

PETER O’MAHONY’S wife Jessica joked “Ralph has made it to Netflix” after posting a video of her son reacting to his cameo in the Six Nations documentary.
The second season of the doc focused on the 2024 Championship, which Ireland won for back-to-back titles.

Peter O’Mahony captained Ireland to that honour, having succeeded Johnny Sexton as skipper following his retirement after the RugbyWorld Cup.
The Netflix doc showed a number of clips of Ireland players and fans celebrating, including O’Mahony and his young son Ralph.
Jessica shared a precious video of Ralph watching his celebrations with his dad, commenting: “Ralph made it to Netflix”.
O’Mahony started the game on the bench, with Caelan Doris filling in as captain.
Simon Easterby – who is filling in as interim head coach during Andy Farrell‘s secondment with the Lions – will be hoping to build on that result when they face Scotland.
He said: “It was tough and physical and what you expect from an Ireland-England game.
“The first half, it was the first round of the Six Nations…it’s always going to be a bit of an arm wrestle so we had to find a way.
“I thought we played well in the first half, we didn’t quite get our accuracy right which is why they were leading.
“But we cleaned it up in the second half. The guys coming off the bench benefited from the work done by the guys who started, it was a tough attritional game.
“We know we need to be better next weekend. It sets us up for next week but it will be incredibly tough.”
The Tartan Army have not beaten Ireland since 2017 when they inflicted defeat on the side then-coached by Joe Schmidt.
The scrum-half said: “That’s the case for a lot of teams now. We’ve kind of been near enough to the top of the rankings for a while.
“I know myself that if I’m coming up against a quality side you want to put your best performance out there. Next week will be no different.”
Scotland view themselves as potential champions and the Leinster star agreed: “One hundred per cent. They’re a classy side.
“They’re playing good footie and they’re stacked full of really good individuals, so it will be a tough challenge. I know it’s been a long time since they won but there’s no reason they can’t.
“But what a place to go and what an opportunity for us to go there and have a crack at them.”

Top charity shop tips for bagging a bargain
Ross Dutton has been a manager for Crisis's charity shops for four years and currently runs the charity's Finsbury Park shop in London.
Choose your area – As a rule of thumb, the posher the area, the better quality the clothes that are donated.
Don’t hang around – If you see something you like, buy it, as it’ll likely be gone when you come back
Look out for cut-off labels – Some of your favourite high street stores will have deals with local charity shops to donate stock that isn’t sold during their own sales. Often part of the deal is that they need to cut the labels off the clothes.
Stay at home – While some charities have their own site, like Oxfam and Crisis. many also sell from dedicated eBay stores, such as British Heart Foundation and Scope. You won’t get the range of bargains that you would get in a physical store, but if you’re looking for something specific it may be worth checking online too.
Social media users were stunned by the ‘brilliant’ prices and were eager to express this in the comments.
One person said: “Great prices.”
