SAMSUNG users have spotted a brand new button that solves a common problem.

But be warned, activating it could have a knock on your battery life.

Find dimming annoying? You can now switch it off[/caption]

As anyone with a Samsung Galaxy smartphone will have noticed, the screen automatically dims when you’re low on battery.

It usually starts to do this when only five per cent is left.

The feature is there with good intention – to spare you as much battery as possible, especially as lights behind the screen tend to be one of the things that suck up power.

As soon as you tap the screen it should light up again – but some people find the feature annoying.

Fortunately, it appears Samsung has decided to give users the option to switch auto dimming off.

A new button was noticed on the latest version of Samsung’s Android operating system One UI 7.

But before you get too excited to make the change, One UI 7 is currently only available on Samsung’s most recent smartphone release, the Galaxy S25 series.

The update is being rolled out to older handsets though, so look out for it over the coming weeks and months.

Of course, switching the feature off runs the risk of battery draining even faster when you have little juice left.

So think carefully about whether you even want to go ahead with the change.

For those who do, just follow these steps – but remember, it’s only available with One UI 7:

1. Swipe down and tap the settings cog icon in the top right
2. Scroll down to Battery
3. Scroll down until you see Auto dim screen
4. Switch it off

MEET the song-writing solicitor who wants to ditch the courtroom to launch a full-time music career.

Sean Coady, 41, from Graiguenamanagh, Co Kilkenny, has been playing guitar for over 20 years but after he started writing his own tunes during Covid, he was persuaded to enter the UK international song-writing competition.

And his song Beyond the Sun made it all the way to the final in the rock/category.

Now Sean has his sights set on taking his talents to the next level.

He told the Irish Sun: “I’ve been playing guitar for over 20 years, just for fun.

“I’ve never really written music, or my songs, nothing like that.

“Then during Covid a friend said I should try and right some of my own.

“So I just started putting some ideas down and the ideas and notes fell out of me on to the page.

“And the feedback was great from people. A friend told me you really have a gift so I started thinking maybe I could take this more seriously and have been giving it some thought.

“I know I’m not that young to be starting a song-writing career but maybe better later than never.

“I’ve 26 songs written now, enough for two albums, and I only started writing songs about four years ago.”

Sean previously worked in a factory before qualifying as a solicitor in 2014 and has been working full-time in Dublin.

But is new first love is music – and his recently-discovered talent for penning catchy rock or indie tunes.

‘PURE MELODY’

His track Beyond the Sun, featuring gifted singer Cherly Marry, has already made waves and wowed judges in the UK Song-Writing Contest last year.

He revealed: “I had the opening three chords in my head for a new song and I wanted it to be a loop of pure melody.

“Once I had the verses, the bridge and the melodic chorus on the guitar, the lyrics literally fell out of me and I wrote the song in about 30 minutes.

“It was originally intended to be a duet but someone suggested it would sound good with a female voice, so I then got in contact with a very talented singer named Cheryl Marry from Co Meath.

“We then went across to JAM Studios last May and recorded the song. I’m very excited for people to hear it now.

REACH FINAL

“I was persuaded to enter a few of my in the UK song-writing contest and they were all very well received.

“I was blown away to have Beyond the Sun reach the final in the rock/indie category but the other songs I entered also received four or 4.5 stars out of five.”

Sean says he loves everything from David Bowie, the Beatles and Prince to Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay but I have an open ear and would listen to anything.

He added: “I started playing the electric guitar in 2020 during lockdown and haven’t looked back since.

 “The thought of writing my own music had never occurred to me until my friend suggested it and I’m so thankful he did as it’s now something I absolutely love doing.

“It was like once the floodgates for writing music opened up and I haven’t stopped since.”

Now Sean plays at open mic nights in Whelans on a Monday and at Board on Clanbrassil Street on a Thursday but is hoping this might lead to new opportunities.

He said: “I’m really enjoying what I’m doing now and love the open mic nights but if I thought it could led to some kind of deal, well I’m open to every possibility. We’ll just see what happens now I guess.”

THREE men have been convicted of the rape and sexual assault of a woman they met in a Dublin nightclub almost six years ago.

The three men had pleaded not guilty to a total of seven counts of rape, oral rape and sexual assault of the woman at an unknown location in a car and in a Dublin house on August 31, 2019.

The jury of eight men and four women returned guilty verdicts today on six of the seven charges after a total of 13 hours of deliberation.

Anthony Hickey, 39, of Ballyogan Square, Carrickmines, Dublin 18, was convicted of rape, oral rape and sexual assault by a majority verdict.

Hickey had pleaded not guilty to one count of raping the woman in his then-home address in Ballyogan and not guilty to one count of oral rape and one count of sexually assaulting her in a car.

Fabio Vicente, 42, with an address at Little Newtown, Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, was convicted of two counts of rape by a majority verdict of the jury.

He had pleaded not guilty to one count of raping the woman in the car and one count of raping her in the house.

Matin Zolfaghari, 34, of Marley Court, Rathfarnham, Co Dublin, was convicted of oral rape by a majority verdict, and acquitted of sexual assault.

He had pleaded not guilty to orally raping the woman in the house and sexually assaulting her in the car.

The men made no visible reaction while the registrar read out the verdicts.

Mr Justice Paul Burns thanked jurors for their care and attention to this “particularly difficult case”.

COMPLAINANT IN COURT

The complainant was present in court when the verdicts were read out.

The judge said the men’s status had changed following their convictions. Remanding the three men in custody, he adjourned the case until March 10 for sentence and directed the preparation of a victim impact statement.

After the court rose, the three men appeared shocked, then hugged family members before they were taken into custody.

A FORMER hockey player and TV soap extra has been jailed for 28 years after he raped and sexually assaulted girls as young as 11.

Philip Hamer preyed on seven girls in a 13-year reign of terror after grooming them on social media.

The prolific sex offender, who appeared as an extra on Coronation Street and Hollyoaks, kept sick “trophy” images of his abuse.

Hamer, 34, also made the girls dress in their school uniforms and “prioritised his sexual desires” by targeting adults as well.

He has now been jailed for 28 years after he was convicted of 41 sex offences.

Manchester Crown Court was told Hamer met one victim while working on the set of Hollyoaks and “forcibly” kissed her.

The ex-Manchester Phoenix and Team GB star then attacked the woman’s daughter.

Police first received a complaint in 2011 but widened the probe in 2023 when other claims came to light.

Hamer contacted one girl when she was 14 on Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

He groomed her into thinking they were in a relationship and admitted having sex with her when she was under 16.

The court heard he “lost interest” but raped her twice at his home when he got back in contact with her a few years later.

Another girl was aged 11 when Hamer messaged her on Snapchat posing as a friend.

He later demanded she send naked images of herself and made her take part in explicit Facetime calls in her school uniform.

Jurors heard he raped her when she turned 13 after driving to a “secluded” spot after school to watch cartoons.

Hamer, who also worked as an extra on Little Boy Blue and Last Tango in Halifax, raped two friends and threatened to crash his car if they didn’t have sex with him on another occasion.

Simon Reevell, prosecuting said previously: “The pattern of Mr Hamer’s offending against most of his victims appears to have been to groom them so that they would feel obliged to forgive him for whatever he had done to them, and to trust him not to repeat his previous conduct.

“Whilst in reality his increasingly demanding sexual requests became the norm. He was able to do this, say the prosecution, via the skilful manipulation of impressionable children.”

Hamer admitted 20 offences before his trial but was convicted of a further 21 charges.

These included eight counts of rape, seven counts of sexual assault, six counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and one count of sexual activity with a child.

Detective Constable Denise Garde said: “Philip Hamer is a sexual predator. Hamer would send unsolicited pictures to his victims and also tracked their movements.

“In his police interview, Hamer showed a denial for any wrongdoing in his actions. He did not believe that he was a sexual predator and that his actions caused severe harm and distress to his victims.

“He incited his victims to send him hundreds of pictures and videos over a period of seven years. One victim was in fear that Hamer may disclose the pictures to others or come to their address.

“After seizing his devices, we later found voyeuristic videos and pictures Hamer had taken of people in changing rooms who were not aware they were being filmed.

“It took one brave victim to come forward, speak to our officers and detail their abuse. This opened up the whole case and resulted in us obtaining evidence that Hamer was a prolific sex offender.”
