A DESPERATE hunt has been launched for a mum and her baby daughter who vanished from home.

Millie Evans, 18, was last seen pushing the tot in a pram through Moreton in Merseyside at around 6.40pm.

Merseyside Police have now launched a search for the mum and daughter, who are from Seacombe.

They have described Millie as 5ft 5ins tall, medium build and shoulder-length black hair.

She has piercings in her cheek and under her eye and was last seen wearing black trousers and a black jacket.

Police also released a picture of the Zumm pram, which black and rose gold.

A spokesperson said: “Millie has been missing from home since yesterday evening, Tuesday 4 February, when she was last seen with her baby daughter at around 6.40pm on Hoylake Road in Moreton.

“Officers are carrying out extensive enquiries to find her.

“Millie is known to frequent Kensington and Liverpool city centre.”

"I can't, I'm on a juice cleanse."

Despite their negative press, juice cleanses are still an extremely popular method for people looking to detox their digestive systems, reset their diets, or lose weight quickly. Influencers push the cleanses on TikTok, and several brands claim their products deliver an array of holistic benefits. This is fueling the juice cleanse market, which was valued at $18 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow to $37 billion by 2031.

However, doctors are urging caution as new research suggests juice cleanses might be doing harm to your body's "good" bacteria. Specifically, a fresh study from Northwestern University found that short-term vegetable and fruit juicing can rapidly alter your microbiome, particularly in the mouth, in ways that could lead to inflammation and gut health issues. Let's unpack the findings.

Study Findings: Major Bacterial Shifts in Just Three Days

• a group on a whole foods, plant-based diet

Samples were taken at 4 different times over the three days to analyze bacterial changes in the body. The researchers found that the biggest microbiome disruption wasn't in the gut—but in the mouth—for those on the juicing-only diet.

According to the results, following a juice-based cleanse for only three days led to:

• Increased Proteobacteria, a group of microbes in the mouth linked to inflammation and disease when present in high numbers
• A drop in beneficial Firmicutes bacteria, which help maintain oral health and prevent infections
• An increase of bacteria in the gut associated with leaky gut and inflammation, as well as microbes that have been linked to cognitive decline

These effects were seen most dramatically in the juicing-only group, whereas the group on a whole foods, plant-based diet actually experienced positive microbial shifts. The group that was juicing while on a whole foods diet had less severe bacterial changes than the strictly juicers, suggesting that fiber plays a key part in drinking fruits and vegetables to enjoy their benefits.

Why fiber? Juicing removes most of the insoluble fiber found in whole fruits and vegetables while concentrating natural sugars. The delicate balance of bacteria in the gut and mouth rely on fiber to thrive. With a lack of fiber, these new findings suggest juice cleanses can wreak havoc on the microbiome in a short period of time.

What Experts Are Warning About Juice Cleanses

"Most people think of juicing as a healthy cleanse, but this study offers a reality check," said the study's senior author, Dr. Melinda Ring, a director of the Osher Center for Integrative Health at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a Northwestern Medicine physician.

"Consuming large amounts of juice with little fiber may lead to microbiome imbalances that could have negative consequences, such as inflammation and reduced gut health." Dr. Ring also pointed out that the results suggest the oral microbiome is "a rapid barometer of dietary impact."

Interestingly, when the researchers asked the 14 study participants to follow a pre-study "elimination diet" focused on whole plant foods that cut out alcohol, processed foods, and caffeine, their gut bacteria experienced positive changes.

This suggests that trying a juice cleanse isn't all it's cracked up to be—especially if it can have such negative impacts in as little as three days.

However, by simply shifting your diet to more whole, plant-based foods, like fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, fish, and lean meats can be even better for your overall health.

SHAMELESS scammers are hiring out Airbnbs to pose as estate agents and landlords, before swindling desperate Brits out of thousands of pounds.

And the shocking rise in such elaborate rental scams across the UK has cost renters a staggering £12million, a new investigation reveals.

New Channel 4 documentary UNTOLD: The £12 Million Rental Scam found the criminals are using websites like Facebook Marketplace and Open Rent to target potential victims.

And with only one property available for every eight tenants looking, renters are desperate, making them easy pickings for the scammers. 

With half of under-35s renting from private landlords, the number of tenants is the highest it’s been since the millennium.

Reporter Harleen Nottay, herself a previous victim of a rental scam, says: “Criminals are posting what looks like genuine property ads online. But once hopeful renters pay up, they’re ghosted and left with nowhere to live.”

As a student Harleen found a rental property on Gumtree and the ‘landlord’ asked her to pay a £1,000 deposit.

Desperate she paid up, but the minute they got the cash she was ghosted and never saw the keys. 

Harleen thought she had just been unlucky but her investigations revealed crimes like this are on the rise with nearly 100 reports made to the police each week.

That’s a jaw-dropping 345 per cent increase in the last decade.

And she believes the fact that people are often ashamed to admit they have been scammed could mean the figures are even higher.

“You are literally walking through a minefield, it is a really tough climate out there,” she says. “It is just such a shame that we are at the point in this country where fraud has got to such a level and it is really hard for people to keep themselves safe.

“Rental fraud is massive. The fact that 40 per cent of all crime in England and Wales right now is fraud is incredible, but even that doesn’t give a true picture as many people don’t even report scams to law enforcement.

“I think we have an epidemic on our hands in this country.

“I think people can be embarrassed to report it, which is why I speak so openly and candidly at being scammed in the past myself.

“I really don’t think there is a place for shame when it comes to any victim of any crime. We don’t sit there and beat ourselves up if somebody comes in and robs our house.

“Why are we doing that when a sophisticated professional who knows exactly what they are doing and the language that works is swindling you?”

Fleeced for £8k

An explosion of social media platforms and online rental forums means it is easy for scammers to hunt out potential victims.

One victim of a rental scam like this is Anna, 26, who was swindled out of thousands in an elaborate scam via Open Rent in London. 

A criminal posing as an estate agent had ripped property images from an Airbnb listing, which the fake estate agent then rented out himself to hold fake viewings. 

He took six months’ rent upfront to secure the property – something that has become standard practice amongst a desperate renting community – and subsequently disappeared, leaving Anna £8,100 out of pocket.

It was only when they went to the property to try to collect the keys to move in that Anna and her partner realised they had been scammed.

“I went to the property and I knocked on the door,” she recalls. “And the guy who answered told me that it was actually an Airbnb, and he had been renting it for the next five days.

“The whole property wasn’t available for rent. It was just an Airbnb that had been hired. I just had this sinking feeling of dread.”

Anna was totally shocked as the whole process had seemed completely professional and above board.

She says: “I’ve signed for properties in the past with less thorough processes. Having a man there who was suited and booted to come and greet us when we did the viewing was normal.

“It was a fake estate agent, fake contracts, a fake website. I just felt so deceived and a loss of hope in the system.”

She reported it to Action Fraud – the national fraud and cybercrime reporting centre – but they did not take her case forward.

Of more than 5,000 rental fraud cases reported to Action Fraud last year, only 67 were brought forward for charges – around 1 per cent of cases.

Luckily Anna had enough documentation to support her case that her bank refunded her the money – but the whole experience left her shattered.

“It wasn’t even about the money in the end,” she says. “Somebody denying you your home, shelter. It was like the theft of your autonomy, your safety and your freedom.”

Harleen adds: “Anna is a very switched-on, intelligent young lady. What happened to her would have happened to me, would have happened to anybody.

“She did all the checks and all the due diligence. She had viewed the property herself, she had proper contracts, it all seemed above board and legitimate.”

Generation rent

Channel 4’s investigation found one of the most prolific websites for scammers is Facebook Marketplace, with new data from Santander revealing the site makes up almost half of all rental scam claims made to the bank in the past year.

Exclusive research carried out for the programme by Generation Rent analysed hundreds of Facebook Marketplace ads across six UK cities – London, Birmingham, Manchester, Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh with some shocking results.

From those analysed, Birmingham had the highest proportion of scammers using false property listings (66 per cent).

Almost three-quarters (74 per cent) of the rentals investigated on Facebook Marketplace had at least one red flag of being a scam, according to Meta’s own guidance.

More than half of the listings (54 per cent) had pictures lifted from sites like Booking.com and Zoopla.

Tilly Smith, Campaigns and Partnerships Officer at Generation Rent, says: “The scale of how many scams that we found were shocking. There are thousands of these adverts going on to Facebook Marketplace.

“Companies like Meta as well as others, absolutely have a responsibility to keep renters protected.

“We know that moderation has a big impact on preventing scams so it’s definitely something they should be doing more on.”

Meta’s own policies state that they do not allow content that attempts to scam or defraud users.

To test this, Harleen posted images of the Shard as a 3-bedroom property to rent for a price of £550 per month – a clearly erroneous post.

After waiting for action for over three weeks before removing it herself, Harleen says: “It’s clear that Meta isn’t doing enough to moderate its platform.

“It’s costing young tenants millions of pounds that they can’t afford to lose in today’s brutal cost of living crisis. 

“Platforms need to stop offering criminals a direct line to vulnerable renters and Action Fraud and the police need to step up and make sure victims get the justice they deserve.”

Facebook owner Meta told the programme: “We are continually investing in protections against fraud on our platforms and work closely with law enforcement.

“We advise our community to report any scams immediately so we can take action.

“We continue to work closely with Stop Scams UK to help identify scams at the source.

“We also provide advice on how to protect yourself and your purchases whilst shopping on Facebook Marketplace.”

The Government’s new Renters’ Rights Bill was discussed in the House of Lords this week and looks to protect tenants by introducing an end to bidding wars on properties and a cap on advance front payments.

Harleen says: “Hopefully this will safeguard our rental tenants a bit more than they are currently.”

In fact, the superclub venue was voted the world’s No.1 nightclub more than once.

Entering through the low-key industrial doors opposite the famous Smithfield Market always gets you excited for the night ahead – where you’ll be catching some of the world’s best drum n’ bass, techno or house music on one of their their three cavernous dance floors.

Several huge nightclubs have launched on the outskirts of the capital since Fabric launched in 1999 and many more have closed.

But if you’re looking for a great night out listening to some excellent music, this is still the place to be.

After living in Italy for a year, I am always on the hunt for tasty Italian grub. Forget supermarket knock-offs and naff plates of pasta and head to Eataly. 

You can’t miss the huge Italian supermarket just outside of London Liverpool Street Station. In my mind, it’s an institution. 

I spend hours wandering the floors for the perfect pasta shape but I never leave without a pack of Pan di Stelle – chocolate biscuits covered in tiny white stars that go perfectly with a morning espresso. 

If you can’t be bothered to cook your own food, then stop at one of its many restaurants.

A short walk from Whitechapel tube station is Brick Lane, arguably the most famous ‘lane’ in London.

Running from Bethnal Green, through Spitalfields, all the way to Whitechapel High Street, it has been well-known for its lengthy stretch of curry houses for several decades.

But the road also houses some of the best nightlife in east London, including the club 93 Feet East, Ninety One Living Room and Montys.

Be sure to stop at one of the legendary 24-hour bagel shops before you head home too.

There are endless activities in Stratford, from shopping at the Westfield centre to swimming in the Olympic Park pool.

There are also gaming, sports bars, restaurants – everything you need to occupy yourself for hours.

But what I love around Stratford is all the green spaces. The River Lea offers boat hire, kayaking, and swan pedalos which are great fun in the summer with a group of friends.

And around the corner are the blossom gardens which in the spring are spectacular.

Created as a memorial, you can guarantee quiet in the blossom gardens, I love it as a place to unwind during a sunny afternoon.

Here are three of our favourite hidden gems across the UK...

Just outside of the city of Cambridge is the quaint village of Grantchester where you’ll find thatched cottages, and a medieval church. It’s also home to the Orchard Tea Garden, in the summer, the tea garden opens up outside so you can enjoy a coffee and sweet treat on the grass in a deck chair.

In the Noughties, Loch Fyne restaurants were the epitome of high
street restaurant chic, with their fancy seafood and champagne
offerings. Now, the only one still open is the original Loch Fyne Restaurant & Oyster Bar in Argyll. We dined on the oysters, which are farmed from the loch, as well as a delicious Cullemn Skink soup, mussels and scallop arancini balls.

Another of our favourite and bizarre tourist attractions in the UK is Margate’s Shell Grotto. Just outside of the Old Town (meaning tourists often forget about it), the strange underground cave is made out of 4.6 million shells, which line its walls from floor to ceiling.

Amy, who posts under @balancebyamy, took to Instagram to show off her casual outfit.

She said: “I just thought I’d quickly show you before I head off to work, this little two-piece I bought in Penneys yesterday.

“I have seen these going viral on TikTok in Dunnes and Zara.

“But in Dunnes Stores they are €40, and in Zara…

“I’m actually not sure how much they are, probably €50 or €60 or something.

“Penneys is €20.”

The TikToker explained there’s some slight difference in each high street design.

She said: “I think the cardigan is slightly different from Dunnes, but I just wanted it for casual wear.

“Now I am going to be wearing it in school.”

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.
