OWNING a dog can bring you a lot of joy… until there are vet bills to be paid.

New research has discovered which breed is actually the cheapest over its lifetime if you are looking to keep costs low – and also the expensive ones to avoid.

If you are looking for a low maintenance dog, you may wish to consider Chihuahua, where were the cheapest with an average lifetime cost of £1,804.53.

This is 60 per cent below the average cost of dogs over their life.

The calculation was worked out by adding the initial starting cost of £404, a lifetime of pet insurance at £789.60 and a lifetime of food at £610.93.

The study, conducted by pet accessories shop Fur King, found Pomeranians to the second-cheapest dog breed to own.

They had an average lifetime cost of £1,863.61, which is 58 per cent less than average. 

The breed has an initial starting cost of £404 and is predicted to cost £892.32 in insurance and £567.29 in food in its lifetime. 

Meanwhile, Toy Poodles have the third-lowest average lifetime cost of £1,882.33, which is 58 per cent below average. 

The breed’s initial starting cost is £404, and owners are predicted to spend £911.04 on insurance and £567.29 on food in their pet’s lifetime.

Pricey pooches

At the other end of the spectrum, the most expensive dog breed was found to be Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dogs.

They had an average lifetime cost of £8,662.53 which is 93 per cent higher than the average total lifetime cost for dogs of £4,478.92. 

An initial starting cost of £511 was calculated for the breed based on purchases such as a dog bed and an initial course of vaccinations for a large dog breed.

The breed also has a lifetime insurance cost of £2,361.60 for accident and illness cover and owners are predicted to spend £5,789.93 on food in the dog’s lifetime, based on how many calories the breed is supposed to consume per day. 

Estrela Mountain Dog has the second-highest average lifetime cost of £7,820.63, which works out at 75 per cent above average.

This was calculated based on an initial starting cost of £511, a lifetime insurance cost of £2,168.76 and a lifetime food cost of £5,140.87. 

Spanish Mastiffs rank third, with an average lifetime cost of £7,303.94, which is 63% higher than average. 

The breed has an initial starting cost of £511, and owners are predicted to spend £1,968 on insurance and £4,824.94 on food across the dog’s lifetime. 

Commenting on the findings, Tom Sadler, Founder of Fur King, said: “The study provides valuable insight into the costs of different dog breeds, which could help inform potential owners on what the best breed for them is – and prevent them from choosing one which they can’t afford in the long run. 

“Naturally, larger dog breeds are more expensive, with the Afghan Hound the only medium-sized dog to feature in the top 10. 

“This is because insurance is pricier for larger breeds as they are more likely to have health issues, and their food costs are higher since they need to consume more. 

“The initial starting cost of larger breed will also be more expensive since they will need more wearable toys and stronger leads than smaller dogs require.”

The Special One was talking to the media after Fenerbahce’s 3-2 comeback win over Caykur Rizespor on Sunday when things took a turn.

Discussing how he can find a balance between the “paradise” and “hell” of being a football manager, Mourinho claimed that he is able to enter the “twilight zone”.

However, his translator was left confused by the Portuguese gaffer’s accent and asked him to clarify if he had used the term “toilet zone”.

Mourinho quickly corrected his colleague and gave him a loving slap on the shoulder in the process.

The funny gaffe left the press room in stitches, while fans online were loving the typically Mourinho moment.

On social media, one fan wrote: “Mourinho’s reaction is hilarious”.

While another added: “I love him so much”.

A third commented: “Jose is the gift that keeps on giving”.

And a fourth posted: “This is hilarious”.

Mourinho began his coaching career as a translator himself.

The 62-year-old acted as the Portuguese translator for legendary manager Sir Bobby Robson during his time as Sporting Lisbon and Porto boss in the 90s.

Even without any experience as a coach, Mourinho left Robson impressed with his knowledge of the game.

He once said: “He’d [Mourinho] come back and hand me a dossier that was absolutely first class.

“[They were] As good as anything I’d received. Here he was, in his early-30s, never been a player or a coach to speak of, giving me reports as good as anything I ever got.”

The pair enjoyed a remarkable success after Robson made Mourinho his assistant at Porto, reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League in the 1993-94 season, only to be toppled by Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona.

They won consecutive Portuguese titles in 1995 and 1996, and when the Dutch legend walked away from the Camp Nou that year – Robson was the man they hired.

A DANCING On Ice star and Olympic hero has revealed he’s “considering” signing up for the next series of I’m a Celebrity.

The 62-year-old competed in the current series of Dancing On Ice but became the latest star to leave the competition on Sunday night.

Now Sir Steve Redgrave has confessed his team are pushing for him to take part in I’m a Celebrity.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun, the Olympic gold medallist said: “My agent has been saying for the last three or four years, ‘why don’t you do I’m a Celebrity?’

“We’ll see. My compromise was to do Dancing On Ice – at the moment. But never say never.”

When asked if he thinks he’d cope in the Australian jungle, retired rower Steve – who won gold for Great Britain five times between 1984 and 2000 – said: “Survive? Yes. Enjoy it? No.

“I’m quite a fussy eater so I wouldn’t do well with the limited calories you get. It might be quite good for my figure from that point of view! It’s something I would consider.”

Steve also confessed he was “relieved” to have been voted off of Dancing On Ice – because he felt “guilty” when others were leaving before him.

He said: “I was absolutely delighted when the public voted to keep me in after show one and show two.

“But seeing Chelsee [Healey] and Ferne [McCann] being knocked out… the guilt on Sunday nights and Mondays was immense.

“I’d be thinking, ‘Yes, the public have kept me in. But they’ve kept the worst skater in!'”

Away from reality TV, Steve has teamed up with underwear brand Step One.

And it’s not just your typical celebrity endorsement as Steve has invested in the Australian company.

He said: “You don’t have to put a huge amount of money in, but I bought in straight away to the product and how comfortable Step One products are.

“I invested more money than I needed to because I believe in the brand and what they’re doing.

“They are designed more for sport but once you’ve worn them and realised how comfortable they are you’ll wear them everyday.”

Steve revealed he gifted the underwear to the Dancing On Ice professionals and his fellow celebrities – and they were a hit.

He said: “It was a bit nerve-wracking because you know these people and all of them just fell in love with the product. The pros were saying they were the most comfortable underwear they’d ever worn.”
