Star of huge 90s popband reveals they missed out on iconic EastEnders role before finding global fame
A GLOBAL pop star has revealed they were just weeks away from having a very different celebrity career.
Emma Bunton is best known as Baby Spice from the 90s mega girl group, The Spice Girls, but she very nearly bagged herself a role in soap land that could have changed the course of pop history.
Emma rose to stardom as part of the Spice Girls but auditioned for the part of Bianca in Eastenders[/caption] Producers decided to go with Patsy Palmer instead[/caption] Emma had previously appeared as a mugger on the Walford based soap[/caption]The Wannabe icon had always wanted to be on stage and screen but before singing became her passion, Emma pursued an acting career.
Keen to one day become a household name, Emma joined the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School.
She had some success and managed to land a minor role in the ITV police drama The Bill in 1993 and she was cast as a prostitute in the BBC drama To Play the King.
But it was Albert Square that almost gave Emma the big break that she’d been hoping for.
Back in 1992 the Heart Radio presenter had appeared briefly in Walford as a criminal, attempting to mug pensioner Jules.
Producers were keen to see more of Emma though, and they invited her to audition for a new character they were going to introduce called Bianca.
Emma tried out, got through the initial screenings and down to the last four hopefuls for the soon to be legendary part.
It wasn’t meant to be though and BBC bosses decided Patsy Palmer would be better suited to play the fiery market trader.
This fateful rejection left the door open to other opportunities and it was only a few weeks later when Emma was asked to sing for the managers of a new girl group.
She said in an interview with Guardian Guide back in 2019, which was then reprinted in journalist Michael Cragg’s book Reach For The Stars: “I’d just missed out on playing Bianca in EastEnders. I was down to the last four.
“So I’d just found out about that and I was devastated. I was at college and a singing teacher asked if I’d ever thought of being in a band.
“She said, ‘Well I’m working with some girls and one of them wants to go back to uni so they’re looking for another girl’.
“She told me to go and meet these two managers, I sang for them and they asked me when I could move in with the girls.”
These were, of course, the Spice Girls and Emma was catapulted into global stardom as part of one of the most successful pop groups of all time.

I gave my Renault Clio a glittery pink makeover – people say it’s ‘giving council estate’ but I think it looks fab
A DRIVER has taken the internet by storm after giving her Renault Clio a sparkly pink glow-up with a paint brush.
Maisie-Ellen Pearson took to TikTok to show how she took her vehicle from bright red to hot pink with a few licks of paint mixed with silver glitter.
Critics reckoned the glittery glow-up was giving ‘council estate’ vibes[/caption]According to the young woman, she had purchased the car – a Renault Clio – a few days ago and decided it needed to go pink.
Armed with just one medium size paint brush, the blue-eyed beauty first poured in a whole bag of shiny glitter into the pot and gave it a good mix with a piece of wood she’d found outdoors.
Once the paint was all ready and she had carefully taped around the lights and windows, the car enthusiast began the makeover process, sharing the journey on a video on social media.
To make the vehicle fir the Barbie theme even more, the driving fanatic had also popped into a store where she forked out for ”stunning” pink mats, a pink steering wheel cover, as well as a sticker that read ‘You just got passed my a girl’ and a pink rally flaps.
Another feature in the freshly-purchased motor included spray-painted fog lights – which Maisie explained never came in handy where she’s based.
”Do you even need fog lights? Cause I live in Blackpool and it’s never even foggy,” she said.
”I just sprayed the black,” she told the 119k followers, many of whom were left concerned about the safety of the vehicle.
Maisie, who posts under the username @maisiepee, used some of the leftover spray paint to go over the legendary diamond emblem in the middle.
”I actually think that’s pretty cool,” the beauty seemed to be chuffed with her unleashed creativity.
The now-viral clip, which has been viewed more than 2.2million times in just two days, also sees the young woman use the same black paint to make a DIY sun strip.
But while the young driver may have been all pleased with herself, the pink transformation hasn’t necessarily gone down a treat online.
Hundreds of horrified viewers flocked to comments left in total disbelief, with one writing: ”Nothing screams ‘avoid me, I’m a danger to the road’ more than this.”
Someone else chimed in: ”What in the council estate front garden is this?”
”What a chav,” a third added, as another insisted that Maisie’s brains had ”left the chat”.
However, not everyone was racing to criticise and slam the sparkly glow-up, as one fan said: ”this is absolutely brilliant.”
”can you do my car please I’ll pay you,” another begged.
”Oh this is giving 2014 vibes & I’m HERE for it,” a viewer commented.

Can I change the colour of my car?
According to the experts at Carwow, it is perfectly legal to change the colour of your car, but you will need to notify both the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) and your insurer.
Read on for a guide on having your colour changed, and how to correctly report it.
How do you change the colour of your car?
Changing the colour of your car can be as simple as picking up some spray paint and doing it yourself.
To permanently change your car’s colour, and with the best possible finish, a full respray is your best bet.
This is often very expensive and can set you back thousands – and it will be a permanent change. This is a good option if you’re restoring an old car, or simply fancy a factory-quality finish.
A more popular option today to have your car wrapped in vinyl – however, even the best wraps won’t be quite as good to look at as a high-quality respray.
It’s also worth noting that wraps tend to deteriorate more quickly than paintwork.
On the plus side thought, drivers can have a wrap removed easily — revealing the car’s original paintwork again.
RTE GAA pundits in disagreement over ‘work in progress’ rule change after teams exploit loophole in Allianz League
THE issue of fly goalkeepers was the topic of debate on the first instalment of Allianz League Sunday of the new season.
This past weekend’s games saw the debut of a number of changes to how gaelic football will be played going forward.
One that inspired conversation was the 3Up-3Back rule, which stipulates that each team must have at least three outfield players in the opposition half at all times.
The qualification of those players needing to be “outfield” conjured a loophole which many were happy to exploit.
They did so by pushing their goalkeepers forward, creating a 12v11 scenario.
On Allianz League Sunday on RTE, pundits Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Ciaran Whelan debated the potential pitfalls of the rule.
And the former Dublin footballer argued that the ability for teams to push the goalkeeper up meant that the change was not getting the desired outcome.
Whelan said: “There is that risk of bringing your keeper up and I think possibly nearly every keeper at the weekend came up and we got old patterns of play on a smaller scale where there was that dead zone between the midfield and the forward line.
“A lot of that has to do with the teams sit back. Teams don’t push out but even when the game goes on due to fatigue, I think naturally people drop off.
“We had a lot of teams keeping possession, going back and forth. It doesn’t give the defence the opportunity to go man to man which might be one of the objectives we are trying to see.
“Every keeper came up and I know and accept that it is a risk bringing your keeper up but I think there is a lot more of an advantage in coming up because it still takes a bit of work to execute.
“I am not too sure whether it leads to the objective we are trying to get and I think it is a work in progress because it is creating that environment where teams are keeping possession.”
There was one prominent instance of the 12v11 being exploited at the other end.
In the 58th minute of Roscommon‘s win over Down in Division 2, Colm Neary made a block down and prompted a rapid counter-attack.
With Down’s goalkeeper caught up the field, Ciarain Murtagh made them pay with a long range shot that went into the empty net.
Eamonn FItzmaurice is a member of the Jim Gavin-chaired Football Review Committee which came up with the changes.
And asked if the 3Up-3Back rule was one the FRC would have to hang onto, the Kerryman responded: “It’s not a case of hanging on to.
“It is a case of let’s see how it plays out. We saw examples over the first weekend of exactly what Ciaran showed, that dead zone, possession play that no one wants to see.
“It is incentivizing teams to push up on the opposition half. We saw an example where Roscommon did that.
“We saw int he Dublin-Mayo game where both teams went man for man a lot.
“The keepers still did come up but it was more in an attacking sense to try and score rather than possession based game.
“I get the complaints, I get the reasons why people might be dissatisfied with it.
“You are trying to balance the innovations in the game and the traditions that people want to see as well.
“It is only weekend one so let’s see how it plays out.”

Center Parcs reveals new attraction at UK park this year… and kids and adults will both love it
A NEW attraction is set to open at one of the Center Parcs resorts in the UK.
Center Parcs Longleat Forest, in Wiltshire, has confirmed plans for new “adventure nets” play attraction.
The treehouses will be connected by net walkways[/caption]Connecting the on-site trees would be large green and brown netted paths, with the three houses up to 3m tall.
The application says: “This proposal has been thoughtfully designed to ensure the layout of the adventure nets structure and material choices are sympathetic to its surroundings, with minimal impact to the existing woodland environment.
“The proposed structure covers less area than the existing course therefore allowing more of the forest floor to be restored and planted with appropriate native species that will enhance the overall biodiversity of the site.”
It added that it would allow guests to “embrace the natural environment” of the parks.
The attraction will replace the current existing golf course which will be removed.
While works of the treetop attraction are to take place this year, the application said minimal disruption will affect guests.
The Longleat resort celebrated its 30th anniversary last year with two new attractions.
Having opened in 1994 – the third UK Center Parcs – it opened its new adventure golf course, which has nine holes.
And the Leisure Bowl was also extended last autumn.
And Center Parcs revealed plans for its first holiday park in Scotland.
The 400-acre resort will have 700 lodges as well as its iconic Subtropical Swimming Paradise indoor water park.
Expected to cost as much as £400million, an official opening date is yet to be confirmed, with plans being put forward later this year.
The first Center Parcs in the UK opened in 1987, with Sherwood Foret in Nottinghamshire.
This was followed by Elveden Forest (1989), Longleat (1994) and Whinfell Forest (1997).
The Sun visited Center Parcs
Mum Jane Atkinson recently visited the Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest – here’s what she thought.
“When we weren’t strolling the grounds or cooking a lodge-side feast, many days were spent by the swimming pool or.
“Center Parcs calls it the “subtropical swimming paradise”, covered by a clear dome that is heated to a balmy 29C year round and filled with plants and trees.
“It certainly did feel tropical and, most importantly, it was included in the price — all day, every day from 10am to 9pm.
“The fun didn’t end there either as, the following day, the kids were booked into a three-hour “Wizard Academy” to make crafts, cast spells and play magical games.
“Aside from this, there is so much else for kids and adults to get stuck into, such as games of squash, falconry classes, bike or pedalo hire and paddleboarding.
“The spa, on the other hand, was my highlight. Now I wouldn’t rule out becoming one of those families who returns every year to Center Parcs.”
Woburn Forest opened in 2014, while Ireland‘s Longford Forest opened in 2019.
If you want to save money, savvy travellers have found Center Parcs breaks that are much cheaper in Europe.
A study conducted last year found that a four-night holiday in a German Center Parcs during the half term holidays was £957 cheaper compared to one in the UK.
Even with flights – where they can be found for around £15 with Ryanair – it was a huge saving.
And one of the world’s oldest Center Parcs resorts in in the Netherlands, which recently opened a new water playhouse.
Here is a new Center Parcs opening in Europe too.
