‘We’re so proud’ – Irish footie ace Mason Melia hailed for record-breaking €2m Spurs move amid ‘sky’s the limit’ tribute

FOOTIE sensation Mason Melia’s schoolboy club has hailed the hotshot’s record-breaking move to English Premier League side Spurs, saying: “We’re so proud.”

The transfer fee for the Ireland underage international is around €2 million upfront, potentially rising to €4.2 million – making the 17-year-old the most expensive League of Ireland player ever.

Wicklow whizzkid Melia will see out the 2025 League of Ireland season with St Patrick’s Athletic before linking up with the North London club in January.

And as the goalscorer’s record-breaking deal made headlines, the Irish clubs that helped mould the multi-million-euro transfer ace lined out to pay tribute to him.

Melia started off with local side Newtown Juniors in Wicklow, before moving to St Joseph’s Boys, the famed nursery in Dublin’s Sallynoggin paired with Bray Wanderers for League of Ireland purposes.

After representing Newtown, St Joseph’s Boys and Bray Wanderers as a youngster, Melia joined St Pats’ youth ranks in the summer of 2022 before breaking through into their senior team as a 15-year-old in 2023.

With Melia now heading for England’s top flight, Kevin Fitzgerald, General Manager at St Joseph’s AFC, today hailed the talented teenager’s history-making move.

He told the Irish Sun: “This is a great leap forward for Mason.”

The General Manager at St Joseph’s AFC recalled the “pleasure of seeing Mason in action” when the young prodigy was at the Bray Wanderers Academy at U13 and U15 level.

And Fitzgerald heaped praise on the coaches at St Joseph’s Boys and Bray Wanderers who helped Mason along the way.

St Joseph’s released pictures of videos of a young Mason with coaches Tommy Tallant and Jimmy Hackett discussing the importance of timing of forward runs.

And the club beamed: “Grassroots coaching at its best.

“To say we are delighted for Mason on his record-breaking transfer is an understatement.

“We wish him and his family the very best going forward with this life changing move.

‘REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT’

“Congratulations to all his former coaches in the club who have helped Mason along the way, you can be very proud of your contributions.

“Mason joins a long list of players who have come through the club to progress into professional football and doing that as well as providing community football teams is a remarkable achievement for our club and it’s volunteer coaches.

“With even better facilities the sky is the limit. Forward to the goal.”

‘Making me howl’ cry fans as RTE star Carl Mullan admits chaotic trip with wife was ‘more than we bargained for’

RTE star Carl Mullan has left fans “howling” after he shared snippets from a “chaotic” trip with his wife.

The 2FM host and his wife Aisling Mullan went on the trip of a lifetime back in 2020 to the Arctic Circle – and it’s safe to say they made some unforgettable memories.

Carl had fans in stitches at the clips of them driving in the harsh snow conditions

Carl took to Instagram today to share some incredible snippets and snaps of their holiday five years on.

The dad-of-three wrote: “5 years to the day since @aisling_mullan and I took a trip to the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights and got a bit more than we bargained for.

(Swipe to see us SHI**ING ourselves trying to drive in the snow).”

In one video the radio host revealed that the pair had just rented a van and told how they would be sleeping in it while an “outrageous snow storm” raged outside.

Later that day, Carl shared a video of himself driving the van in the storm with barely any visibility due to the heavy snowfall.

After a while, Aisling got out of the van and attempted to remove the build up of snow on the windscreen so they could continue to drive.

Carl told followers that “every ten minutes” they had to get out and pull the ice off of their windscreen wipers or else they wouldn’t move.

The funny man added a snap of Aisling layered up in clothes and making an unsatisfied face while scraping the snow off the car window.

A caption over the photo wrote: “That is the face of a woman who is enjoying her holiday.”

The Dubliner then recorded a video of himself and Aisling playing techno music and drinking cans of beer in the back of the van as they took a pit stop for the night.

The next day, Carl captured a video of himself driving the van and attempting to “overtake” for the first time.

As a tractor slowly crawled along the road, Aisling and Carl hilariously screamed as their car sped up and overtook it.

Of course, fans and friends all ran to the comment section to react to the couple’s fantastic adventure.

‘HYSTERICAL’

Karina wrote: “I think you’re my favourite couple.”

Mary laughed: “This post is making me howl with laughter and at the same time making me feel so anxious!”

Lynn added: “Wow… you two have had an amazing (and busy) five years.”

Tammy said: “This is absolutely gold, you two are the best craic! Tonic for the soul.”

And Debra remarked: “Oh my God. You are hysterical.”

Willie Mullins reveals his Cheltenham Festival ‘banker’ as horse is labelled best Irish novice in 50 years

WILLIE MULLINS says Supreme hotpot Kopek Des Bordes is his Cheltenham Festival banker.

The champion trainer was ‘blown away’ when the five-year-old romped to victory at the Dublin Racing Festival on Sunday.

And he revealed Ted Walsh phoned him up the day after to wax lyrical about the horse, comparing him to the brilliant but ill-fated Irish novice Golden Cygnet.

Mullins said: “The performance blew my mind, to be honest with you, because it was a field with plenty of strength in depth.

“They were good horses and he just dominated them, Paul Townend said the horse nearly ran away with him three times in the race but he still had more than enough in the tank to pull away after the last.

“Ted Walsh rang me to say it was the best performance from a novice he had seen since Golden Cygnet, which is pretty huge for him to feel the need to pick up the phone and tell me that.

“He wouldn’t phone me very often, so I was pretty taken aback, I think it was a huge statement.”

Kopek Des Bordes is a top-price even-money for the Festival curtain raiser on March 11.

Mullins added: “He came out of the race at Leopardstown in great shape. If you were to ask me for our banker of the week it would have to be him, it’s hard to pick any holes in him.”

Mullins also confirmed that his other hugely exciting novice hurdler, Final Demand, would go for the Turners’ Novices Hurdle at the Festival.

He bolted up at the Dublin Racing Festival and the Albert Bartlett had been mooted as a possible target.

He said: “The Albert Bartlett wouldn’t be a race I’d want to go for with him. He’s only had two runs, and I’d like a horse who started earlier in the season for that one.

“I think it’s a tough race on horses for the rest of their career and I don’t think he needs that. I think two miles five on that track at Cheltenham in the Turners, up that hill, is very tough on a horse and that would be a big enough question to ask him at this stage.

“Looking at him, he looks a real chaser. He must be 17.2, he’s as strong as any horse I’ve had.

“Strength wise, he probably looks more like Florida Pearl, he’s so strong through the body whereas Galopin Des Champs is a very different type of horse, he’s much more evenly balanced through the body and a lighter framed individual.

“This fellow is a big unit and I’m happy to do that (the Turners) before going novice chasing next season.”

My boyfriend dates multiple women but I’m monogamous – people say I’m ‘dumb’ & he’s ‘toxic’, but we have 2 kids together

A MUM-OF-TWO has revealed why she lets her partner sleep with other women despite being monogamous herself.

Dazy and Chxpo have two children together, and despite having a family, Chxpo still goes out to meet new ladies.

The pair candidly opened up about their relationship to Love Don’t Judge, revealing they first met in a polyamorous relationship.

Chxpo said: “When I first met Dezy, I had my wife and two girlfriends. She was a part of the polyamorous relationship, but we had our own thing.

“Everybody broke up with each other and we were just together. Then she got pregnant, and I didn’t really have the time to entertain other women.”

“People think it’s weird that he dates other girls but I don’t date other guys,” said Dezy.

While he does admit his extramarital affairs have taken a backseat since they had kids, he still hits women up on social media and keeps in touch with girls he has dated.

Dezy revealed that she found it hard knowing he was still speaking to other women.

“It’s really hard. I guess I just say I’m okay because he is my number one; he is my baby father,” she explained.

“I do have to deal with it I don’t want to change him., but I do at the same time it.”

The mother of his children also finds his polyamorous side difficult as he often doesn’t tell her when he is seeing new women.

“I  feel disrespected, sometimes I just find out and that to me I don’t like because I feel like when you’re in poly relationships you’re supposed to tell your partner everything,” she explained.

Dezy also says she gets furious when women post him as their boyfriend online.

” I never tricked her into thinking that things would change the way she wants them too,” he revealed but added it was ‘unfair’ for her to find out before he could tell her.

Despite warnings that she is dating a ‘red flag’ Dezy says she still loves Chxpo and won’t throw their relationship away.

The clip posted on YouTube soon went viral and people had plenty to say about the relationship.

One person wrote: “This isn’t poly – she’s just letting him cheat.”

Another commented: “It’s better to be single than waste your time being with a cheating partner that you know you cannot trust.”

“She had kids with him… she brought kids into this situation… she dislikes her situation and lives in denial, and she brought two new lives into the situation.” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “I feel like this isn’t even being polyamorous anymore he’s just putting that label on himself so he can sleep around with multiple women.”

“If she’s dumb enough to deal with that then she has no self-respect,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “Stop making people your number 1 who consider you just another number. That’s not poly, just toxic.”

New £16million tourist destination inspired by New York’s Coney Island to open in underrated UK city

THE UK city home to the first Greggs is getting a huge new American-inspired food attraction.

Following on from its success in Manchester, Freight Island is set to open its second site in Newcastle.

The £16million tourist destination will transform a former Debenhams unit in Eldon Square to become the largest food, drink, and entertainment venue in a UK city centre.

Inspired by the likes of New York’s Coney Island and Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens, Newcastle‘s Freight Island will be a mixture of family-friendly events.

Located on the top floor of the defunct department store, the 60,000 square foot space will have a selection of food stalls and a new live music venue.

Called the Music Box, the new venue will host a variety of touring acts from art showcases, theatre shows, national festivals and DJ sets.

Raves for kids will also be part of its roster of events.

There will also be a restaurant onsite as well as communal seating areas underneath a retractable roof.

A specialist Aperitivo cocktail bar will have cocktails on tap as well as wines and beers.

The new city centre attraction is slated to open in the autumn, with an official date yet to be revealed.

Co-founder and managing director of Freight Island, Dan Morris, said: “This venue has been designed with scale, prominence, and long-term investment in mind.

“We hope to replicate the huge success of Freight Island in Manchester, where it has already contributed over £30 million to the local economy.

“This incredible venue in the heart of a very special city offers a truly exciting opportunity to create a cultural space that could become a focal point of Newcastle for years to come.”

Until Freight Island opens later this year, there are plenty of other activities and attractions to keep visitors entertained in the underrated UK city.

Newcastle is home to Grey Street, which is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most beautiful streets thanks to its Georgian architecture.

The road runs from the ornate Theatre Royal down towards the city’s iconic quayside where the famous Tyne and Millenium bridges are found.

Freight Island will have to compete for a spot on Newcastle’s culinary map, with Gordon Ramsay declaring the curry he had at Khai Khai was as good as some that he had tried in India.

The celebrity chef said: “I had one of the best curries in my entire life, that took me back to being in Mumbai and Rajasthan.”

From fine dining to fast food, Newcastle is home of British fast food staple Greggs, with the first branch opening in the city 80 years ago.

There are plenty of things to do in Newcastle, including a walk over the Tyne and Millenium bridges[/caption]

There are plenty of other sites in the city too, including the Baltic Centre for contemporary art.

The former flower mill hosts a range of variety of exhibitions, events and educational programmes.

If you’re in need of a laugh, there’s also the Stand comedy club where A-list performers have been spotted trying out new material.

And for families, there’s also The Hoppings – the largest funfair in Europe.

It’s been running since 1882 and sees more than 400 of the country’s biggest and brightest attractions arrive at the town moor for a week of fun each year.

What is it like to visit Newcastle?

THE SUN’S David Whitley recently visited Newcastle, here’s what he thought…

Newcastle, with its wild party scene, has a strong reputation as a city break for adults.

But how does the Toon pass muster with kids in tow?

There’s a slightly old-fashioned feel to the Discovery Museum — it largely focuses on the history of Newcastle and the River Tyne, which is more of interest to parents.

Understandably, the sections on the coal industry don’t grip the girls but the interactive segments are great.

They try on Norman helmets, pull on ropes to get cargo off a ship and attack the Science Maze section with gusto.

No one will claim Newcastle Castle is the most impressive in Britain but what makes it special is that it is in the city centre.

There’s no set tour to follow, which means the girls are free to scamper up staircases, down passageways and through heavy wooden doors.

They revel in being able to explore, having free run of the maze-like castle keep.

They find prison cells, a chapel and medieval-style toilets.

The star attraction, however, is the planetarium.

Here, a show about the constellations opens the girls’ eyes to the scale of the universe.

They’re wowed to discover a star that’s a million times bigger than the sun, and a supernova playing out across the overhead dome is dazzling.

The UK’s busiest train station is also undergoing a multi-billion development.

And here’s the first look at the London skyscraper set to be one of the tallest in Europe.
