They are priced at just €20 and come in sizes 8 to 22.

The retailer said: “These high-rise skinny jeans are designed to slim the tummy and contour your curves.

“They are crafted from a stretchy, cotton-rich denim that offers support and control.”

The jeans can be styled with just about anything from t-shirts to fancier tops for a night out.

Meanwhile, shoppers are scrambling to get their hands on a “viral suit” – and all the major high street shops have released their own version.

The suits generally consist of a stretch long-sleeved top and stretch leggings.

A fashion blogger told how Penneys has dropped the look for a bargain €20.

Amy, who posts under @balancebyamy, took to Instagram to show off her casual outfit.

She said: “I just thought I’d quickly show you, before I head off to work, this little two-piece I bought in Penneys yesterday.

“I have seen these going viral on TikTok in Dunnes and Zara.

“But in Dunnes Stores they are €40, and in Zara… I’m actually not sure how much they are, probably €50 or €60 or something. Penneys is €20.”

The TikToker explained there’s some slight difference in each high street design.

She said: “I think the cardigan is slightly different from the one in Dunnes, but I just wanted it for casual wear. Now I am going to be wearing it to school.”

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

Dangerous inmate, 20s, who sliced prison officer in face with shiv moved to maximum security jail after weekend of chaos

THE dangerous inmate who sliced a highly-regarded prison officer in a shocking attack has been transferred to Ireland’s maximum security jail in Portlaoise.

We have learned the young thug, aged in his 20s, will now face the strictest measures to ensure staff members’ safety.

The highly volatile lag launched a completely unprovoked attack on the officer on Sunday afternoon as he emerged from his cell on B-Base at Dublin’s Mountjoy.

The staff member suffered a deep wound from his lip to chin and underwent surgery following the incident.

The move of the prisoner responsible – who previously carried out two stabbings in Dublin – is set to be barrier handled when he comes into contact with prison officers.

Although he has not been arrested yet, it is expected that he will be charged over the horror assault with a homemade shiv.

A source told us: “There is resources and training in Portlaoise to deal with the likes of him.

“He will be barrier handled in there, so when he comes out of his cell there will be a number of staff who will wear full riot gear and have shields for their own protection.”

The prisoner had posed serious challenges in Mountjoy, having spent time in the Challenging Behaviour Unit.

He has almost 80 convictions including for threats to kill and other vile assaults.

The incident happened amid a weekend of chaos in the Dublin lock-up with other officers targeted.

One suffered injuries when he had a hot cup of tea thrown in his face.

While in the D Division, inmates have been smashing lights and swinging brushes at staff.

On Bank Holiday Monday, the jail was put on complete lock down as officers carried out a major operation to hit back.

The Irish Sun revealed how 30 phones and 5000 tablets were seized at the jail, along with crack cocaine and weapons.

Following the attack on their staff member, the Irish Prison Service said that “any act of violence against prison staff is unacceptable”.

Gardai confirmed a full investigation into the incident is underway.

Major social welfare boost for thousands as €1,800 payment – how to find out if you’re eligble as exact date confirmed

THOUSANDS of people could be set to receive a €1,800 social welfare payments into their accounts sooner than expected.

The Pay-Related Job Seeker’s Benefit will be implemented from March 31, 2025.

The payment will be available for people who become fully unemployed on or after the March 31, 2025 and have enough pay-related social insurance (PRSI) contributions.

There will be three different rates available.

A maximum of €450, or 60 per cent of your prior income will be available for people who have made at least five years PRSI contributions.

The €450 rate will be paid for the first three months.

A second rate of a maximum of €375, or 55 per cent of your prior income will be paid for the following three months.

And a third rate of a maximum of €300, or 50 per cent of your prior income will be paid out for the final three months.

The minimum payment rate available €125.

There are a number of conditions applicants will be required to meet to qualify for the payment.

First, you must have paid at least 104 PRSI insurable employment contributions at Class A, H or P.

The second condition is that you have paid at least 4 PRSI insurable employment contributions at Class A or H in the 10 weeks before applying.

And the third condition is that you must have paid at least 26 PRSI insurable employment contributions at Class A or H in the 52 weeks before your first day of unemployment.

Government guidelines states you “must have at least 104 employment contributions in the period since entering insurance, at least four employment contributions in the 10 weeks immediately prior to the date the application for benefit is made and at least 26 employment contributions in the 52 weeks immediately prior to the first week for which they are claiming benefit”.

PREVENTING A ‘CLIFF-EDGE DROP’

Announcing the new payment last year former Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys said it will prevent a “cliff-edge drop” for those with a strong work history who become unemployed.

She said: “I’m delighted to sign the order which means that Pay-Related Benefit will come into effect on March 31 2025.

“Under these landmark reforms, people who have a long work history and who have contributed to the system via their PRSI will receive enhance benefits if they find themselves in that awful situation of losing their job.

“We have seen situations in the past where companies can close and workers face a sudden and large drop in their income.

“Pay-Related Benefit is all about providing workers with a greater safety net and cushioning them from a sudden cliff-edge drop in income.”

FEBRUARY MONEY CHANGES

Social Welfare date change:

Due to the St Brigid’s Day Bank Holiday weekend, bank and post offices will be closed on Monday, February 3. This means that all social welfare payments are due to be paid on Monday was sent on Friday and Saturday before the closure.

Announced in the Budget 2025, all domestic electricity customers would receive second instalment of €250 in credit towards their bills this month.

Revolut:

The banking company has announced that it will allow credit card customers to pay off their balance in instalments, meaning they can opt for repayments over three, six, nine and 12 months at a lower rate than their standard annual percentage rate.

Diageo:

The company has announced that the price of Guinness, Harp, Smithwicks and Hophouse 13 will increase from February 3 – the price of a pint is expected to increase to over €6 across the country

The existing Jobseeker’s Benefit will remain in place for people not eligible for Pay-Related Benefit “because they are working on a part-time, casual, short-time or seasonal basis”.

The new benefit won’t be backdated and will only be available to people made unemployed after March 31 next year.

Department chiefs said: “If you are unemployed you can apply for the existing Jobseeker’s Benefit scheme.

“If you are already getting Jobseeker’s Benefit when the new Jobseeker’s Pay-Related Benefit starts, you will stay on that payment until your entitlement expires or until you return to employment.”

Man Utd paid Sporting Lisbon £12million for Ronaldo – just a year after Ferdinand went from Leeds to Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side had a pre-season friendly against the Portuguese club and CR7 dazzled Red Devils chiefs during the game.

So much so, that the legendary boss spoke to him after the game and made sure he chose Man Utd ahead of any other club.

Ferdinand told the BBC: “We were invited to go to play Sporting to open their stadium.

“We had just missed out on signing Ronaldinho. We were all excited thinking we were getting Ronaldinho, then he went and signed for Barcelona. We were all a bit deflated.

“We were going to play Sporting and you start getting whispers, they’ve got this kid called Ronaldo, meant to be really good.

“I didn’t think anything of it and the game starts. Then we are looking at each other and you’re like, ‘OK, this kid is the real deal’.

“Look at him, he is like doing mad stuff, he is embarrassing a couple of our players.

“The we were all standing there saying, ‘Oh my God, we’ve got to sign him.’

“On the coach after, waiting everyone’s sitting there going, ‘Been here an hour, waiting, what’s going on? We’ve got to get to the airport.’

“Noise starts travelling back through the coach that David Gill, who was CEO, and the manager are in there.

“They have got Cristiano in a vice-like lock, waiting. He can’t leave the stadium until he signs and agrees to come to United.”

Ronaldo, who celebrates his 40th birthday today, went on to make 346 appearances for the club over two spells, scoring 145 goals.
