If you haven’t heard yet, Amanda Seyfried is starring in a brand new show on Peacock titled Long Bright River. The drama series, which premiered this week on March 13, is already getting rave reviews from critics.

In the nail-biting show, Seyfried plays Mickey, a Philadelphia police officer who works in an area hard-hit by the opioid crisis. When a series of women go missing, including her estranged sister who’s long battled with addiction, she soon gets wrapped up in solving the case.

“As intriguing as the mystery surrounding the murdered women is, Seyfried’s performance as Mickey elevates this series,” Variety said of the show in their review. “A beautifully structured series, Long Bright River is about sisterhood, connection and the truths often buried under deep-seated guilt and shame.”

And while all this praise might be enough for you to press play on the series, know that it was a novel first. Written by Liz Moore and published in 2020, the novel became an almost instant bestseller, making it to former President Barack Obama’s favorite books of the year list and one of Good Morning America‘s book club picks.

In the book description, we learn a little bit more of Mickey and her tenuous relationship with her sister. “In a Philadelphia neighborhood rocked by the opioid crisis, two once-inseparable sisters find themselves at odds,” the description reads. “One, Kacey, lives on the streets in the vise of addiction. The other, Mickey, walks those same blocks on her police beat. They don’t speak anymore, but Mickey never stops worrying about her sibling.”

“Then Kacey disappears, suddenly, at the same time that a mysterious string of murders begins in Mickey’s district, and Mickey becomes dangerously obsessed with finding the culprit–and her sister–before it’s too late,” it continues.

“Alternating its present-day mystery with the story of the sisters’ childhood and adolescence, Long Bright River is at once heart-pounding and heart-wrenching: a gripping suspense novel that is also a moving story of sisters, addiction, and the formidable ties that persist between place, family, and fate,” the description ends.
