The Solo Leveling anime has made several changes from the original manhwa and novel, but one of the most controversial upcoming events in the anime is its portrayal of Goto Ryuji.

There is a political connotation to how Goto Ryuji is viewed, not to mention to steer away the focus from the conflict between countries (so as to avoid souring the relationships in the real world), they need to highlight and focus on Ryuji more.
To do this, they need to hype and increase the status and impact of Ryuji. He is already being framed as a serious rival to Sung Jinwoo, the up-and-coming superstar Hunter.
Ryuji’s softer defeat could lessen Beru’s impact
Removing some scenes from the manhwa, which show him being terrified and getting one-tapped by Beru (the Ant King), could decrease any hostility between Japan and Korea’s strongest hunters while also hyping up their fight.

But this could take on a disastrous turn. The reason that the Jeju arc is so popular and a highlight of the series is because of how powerless the people of the world feel when faced with the seemingly invincible Ant King.

Goto Ryuji and the Japanese Hunter Association just pop in to give South Korea more trouble, but when it is seen that Goto Ryuji, one of the strongest S-rankers, is instantly killed, the terror that spreads through the people of the world is immeasurable.

Now, what happens is that Ryuji uses his swordplay and reflexes to block a strike from Beru, but due to the hard carapace of Beru, the sword ends up breaking, and Ryuji gets decapitated before he can dodge Beru’s strike.
But if Ryuji survives, puts up a fight, or escapes, then the threat of the Ant King will not be a sword hanging on the necks of the people spectating, it will just be a major threat that ‘needs to be taken care of’.
How this could snowball into a disaster
By softening Goto’s defeat, A-1 Pictures risks creating inconsistencies in the anime’s power scaling. The narrative is heavily focused on the fame and reputation that Sung Jinwoo gained during the Jeju Island arc, and it will be lessened if the stakes are not as high as they were supposed to be.

Ryuji is supposed to be an evil-minded character who meets a bad end and is to be used as a stepping stone by the protagonist, Sung Jinwoo. But now, it is being changed to an extent that might cause a snowball effect and tear open cracks, loopholes, and inconsistencies in the whole of the series.
Beru and Jinwoo have a unique relationship, and Beru respects Jinwoo for being a strong human even when he is alive, but if Ryuji is able to take on and tackle him, then the gap between them is lessened, causing the impact of the fight and to fall by a lot.
Solo Leveling is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The manhwa is available for reading on Tapas.
