“Not a lot of people thought I spoke English”: Speaking Fluent Dothraki On Game of Thrones Really Hurt Jason Momoa’s Career For a While

Many years have passed since Jason Momoa starred in Game of Thrones. Playing the role of Khal Drogo in the very first season of the series, his part to play in the series ended as quickly as Daenerys’ marriage. His career has changed quite a lot in this time, going from playing a small role in one of the biggest series of all time to becoming Aquaman himself.

However, it would seem that his time in the beloved series also affected his career a great deal. During an interview, the actor confessed that he did not get jobs after he starred in Game of Thrones for quite a hilarious reason.

Jason Momoa may have played Khal Drogo a little too well

Khal Drogo’s character is frequently mentioned throughout all seasons of Game of Thrones. At the same time, Jason Momoa was only physically present in the first two seasons of the series, leaving him to look for jobs elsewhere after his work in the series was done. However, this proved to be quite challenging for the actor.

One of the more defining traits of Drogo’s character is the fact that he does not speak English. Daenerys Targaryen’s character finds it very difficult to communicate with her husband since the only language that he knows is Dothraki. The harsh language paints quite a picture of the character and subsequently seems to have left Momoa in quite a casting bubble.

In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, he confessed that he did not get much work after starring in the series, and the reason is quite hilarious. Even though Dothraki is a fictional language, many casting directors had the same image of Momoa and thought that he could not speak English.

Not a lot of people thought I spoke English. It was very challenging. It’s like what do you do with Drogo? I mean, you’re not gonna put him in a comedy.

With this in mind, they found it difficult to find a place for him in their films and shows. Momoa even joked that Drogo wouldn’t fit very well in a comedy or romantic setting, which is why he understood the lack of opportunities in his professional life.

Game of Thrones left Jason Momoa jobless

While Jason Momoa’s experience after Game of Thrones is quite hilarious, on its own, he joked that one moment broke his heart after playing Drogo. The actor revealed that he once got the opportunity to meet Fred Armisen after he starred in the series.

The actor and comedian, best known for projects like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Saturday Night Live, and Wednesday, had worked with Momoa’s stepdaughter, Zoë Kravitz, which allowed the Aquaman actor to also meet him. However, Armisen was also under the impression that Momoa could not speak English.

I met him, and my stepdaughter, Zoe, did “Portlandia.” And he was so excited to meet me. I said, “Oh my god!” He’s amazing. And then he was like, “I didn’t even know you spoke English.” It was heartbreaking. I was like, “That’s why I’m not getting any jobs.”

In fact, he told him exactly this when they met, which helped the actor realize why he was not getting jobs for quite some time. Ironically enough, Zack Snyder was also a fan of Game of Thrones and knew of Momoa through the series itself.

Zack was a huge fan of Game of Thrones. A lot of people are huge fans of Game of Thrones. And Zack was the one that…I couldn’t get a job and Zack called me in and he’s a huge fan.

Even though Drogo’s character made it difficult for the actor to get a job for quite some time, it also aided him in getting the role of Aquaman in the DCEU, which certainly did wonders for his career.
