Cheapest area to rent in Scotland revealed

THE cheapest area to rent a home in Scotland has been revealed, according to new figures.

Home design firm Hyperion Tiles has provided a rundown of the most affordable locations to rent across the UK.

The research analysed data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which tracks private rental prices across Britian.

The experts also sifted through the latest ‘Private Rent and House Prices, UK‘ report from January 2025.

They focused on median monthly rents by each local authority.

And with those figures, they created a list of the top ten cheapest counties for renters.

And one Scottish location was deemed as being in the top three most affordable areas in the UK.

Of all the counties in Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway was named as the number one most affordable place to rent a home.

With rents soaring in cities and southern hotspots, these counties prove you don’t have to break the bank to find a decent home


Experts at Hyperion Tiles

The county is a beautiful part of the country that has a stunning coastline of rocky shoreline and sandy beaches as well as acres of forest and green spaces.

And the area offers renters a chance to snag a place for as little as £513 a month on average.

While it came in as the cheapest place in Scotland, it ranked third in the overall list for the whole of the UK.

The other top spots in the top three was taken by County Durham and Hartlepool.


These places had an average monthly rent of £498 and £500, respectively.

Northumberland and Ceredigion sealed the other two spots in the top five with an average monthly rent of £550 and £558.

Monthly rent figures in Powys was also £558, which was closely followed by East Riding of Yorkshire and North Yorkshire which cmae in at £600 and £650.

The remaining two spots in the top ten were given to Shropshire and Staffordshire, which both had an average rent of £700 a month.

A spokesperson from Hyperion Tiles, the team behind this analysis, shared their take on the findings.

They said: “With rents soaring in cities and southern hotspots, these counties prove you don’t have to break the bank to find a decent home.

“The North East and rural pockets of Scotland and Wales are flying under the radar as havens for renters looking to stretch their pound further.

“Whether you’re escaping the urban grind or just hunting for a bargain, these areas offer a lifeline in today’s pricey rental market.”
