She will be up against Scottish Greens MSP Maggie Chapman for the role[/caption]
But now she has been put forward for a role in her hometown.
The BBC star is one of four candidates in the race to be the next rector at Dundee University, The Courier reports.
And all four will face-off in a debate tonight in a bid to rack up some votes.
Competing against Sheli for the role is current rector Keith Harris, who has held the role for three years.
Scottish Greens MSP Maggie Chapman also put her name forward for the position.
She previously vowed to “shine a light” on the management at the university which is facing some financial struggles.
The 45-year-old, who was previously rector at Aberdeen University, said the students and staff asked her to stand.
Mubarak Babalola, a biomedical sciences graduate, has also been named as a candidate for the job.
It comes as the university is set to axe 632 jobs, with interim principal Shane O’Neill saying “the current financial crisis” had led to the decision.
The move means 20 percent of the university’s 3,000-strong workforce will be axed.
Professor O’Neill also admitted that the scale of the cuts meant that compulsory redundancies would be inevitable.
For the upcoming rector election, each of the four candidates have been nominated by at least 50 students.
In the role, whoever is elected will get to work with the students association to share issues raised by students.
They also hold a seat on the university’s governing court, which could play a key role in recovering from financial crisis.
Sheli will join her fellow candidates at the debate night from 6pm tonight at Dalhousie Lecture Theatre 1.
Students will then be able to cast their vote from today, up until March 21.
