Crazy moment Scots family home ransacked by surprise visitor as creature searches kitchen for food

THIS is the moment a hungry otter ransacked a family’s kitchen in search of dinner.

The cheeky creature was looking for something to eat outside of the Shetland home of Donna Mouat who was cooking for her husband Ryan, 42 and their two children Geordie, four, and Vaila, six.

Donna told her kids about their visitor and the curious youngsters went outside for a closer look – leaving the door open and a chance for the otter to head on inside to scavenge.

After scuttling inside the animal thrashed around the hallway and hid in a storage room.

Ryan can be heard gently trying to coax the animal out, before it appears again running through his legs at full speed and into the front room where it scales a floor lamp, before swinging from the top of it.

It then fled into the kitchen when it jumped on surfaces, smashing dishes and even hopped in and out of cupboards before finally making its escape out the front door.

Ryan, a fisherman who had brought home a fresh catch that day which seemed to entice the brazen creature inside, caught the whole thing on camera.

After uploading the clip to TikTok the video quickly went viral amassing more than 25,000 views.

Speaking of their surprise visitor on February 21, Donna said: “It was definitely a moment of ‘Oh, oh! You couldn’t make it up!

“My husband is a fisherman, so he’d brought some home with him and there was some old fish lying around in his equipment. It must have come to hunt for some food!

“It all just happened so quickly!”

Donna said although their visitor caused a bit of excitement, they were a;; to aware of the potential danger it posed.

She told the Daily Record: “We know otters can be quite vicious, and we worried it could bite one of us, so we thought the kids should stay out of the way,”

“I kept out of the road with them while Ryan went in after it and I caught the shock of it coming back out.

“It was just so funny watching Ryan trying to get it out that I had to put it online.

“I’m amazed that nothing was broken with all the mess it caused! But I did have to chuck the tea out after all that.”

Donna says the otter’s visit has even given the family five minutes of fame in their community – but they haven’t seen him since. She said:

“Shetland is a small place so every time we go out anywhere people are coming up to us saying, ‘Are you that family with the otter in your kitchen?’

“Even my mum is getting recognised.

“We’ve never seen the otter again, but I’m not surprised because we gave it a right shock, probably.”

An SSPCA spokesperson said: “You should contact our helpline for advice if you come across an otter out of its natural habitat. Always keep a safe distance as they can be aggressive.”
