“The immersion is so important”: Rockstar Granting Roger Clark Ownership of Arthur in Red Dead Redemption 2 Made the Character Unforgettable

Red Dead Redemption 2 is hands down one of the best video games ever, and no one can change our minds on that. From the open-world, Wild West setting to the most beautiful valleys and ravines, the title is an absolute treat to play. One could spend hours in this game and still not get bored of it.

Other than the extremely good story and visuals of the title, the protagonist, Arthur Morgan, also contributes to making the whole game as perfect as possible. Let’s delve deeper into how Arthur Morgan’s actor, Roger Clark, helped make the character more memorable.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was released back in 2018, and it became an instant hit. The game made by Rocksteady Studios sold more than 70 million copies across the world and won over 175 Game of the Year Awards. Although the gameplay, visuals, and story were top-notch, what truly made the players connect to the game was Arthur Morgan.

Roger Clark, who plays Arthur Morgan in the game, does a magical job of bringing the character truly to life. The mannerisms, the slow walk, and the grunts of frustration are all examples of how dedicated Clark was in truly making the character unforgettable.

In an interview between PCgamer and Roger Clark, he talks about how grateful he is towards Rocksteady for giving him complete ownership over Arthur and how, for him, immersion matters the most.

Not a lot of studios do it that way, but I was very, very grateful that Rockstar Games gave me so much ownership over Arthur. Arthur walks like me, he rubs his nose like me. The immersion is so important. I feel really blessed.

In the same interview, Clark also reveals that the hardest thing about playing Arthur in Red Dead Redemption 2 was crouch running and how the charade left him with thigh pain three days later.

People often ask me what was the hardest thing about Red Dead Redemption 2, and I’ll tell them it was crouch running, We crouch-ran for, I think, a couple of days. Because you gotta crouch run, walk, stealth, run with one gun, run with two guns, then you gotta crouch-run with a rifle. Like, three days later, my thighs were absolutely killing me.

He also reveals that having full control over the character brings a lot of pressure that the actor has to face during shoots. He states that he often second-guessed himself, thinking he could’ve done a particular scene in a different way.

Arthur Morgan left a strong impression on the players, and while the whole development team of Red Dead Redemption 2 was behind it, we cannot simply squeeze in Roger Clark’s contribution with the others. The actor did such an excellent job connecting with the players that when the protagonist dies, we are just left bawling our eyes out.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has made millions of fans around the world with its graphics, tone, gameplay, theme, and story, and all of this would not have been possible if it weren’t for Roger Clark.

However, if there’s a Red Dead Redemption 3 strutting about anywhere on Rockstar’s planning board, we just hope Roger Clark and Arthur Morgan would somehow make a return (yes, let us dream please).
