Created by Aaron Korsh, Suits is regarded as one of the most popular and successful legal dramas on television. It starred Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Rick Hoffman, Gina Torres, Meghan Markle, and others. The show received an immense surge in its popularity after it started to stream on Netflix and Peacock in 2023.
Suits went on to be the most-streamed show of the year in 2023. Critics as well as the audience admired the combination of Macht’s Harvey Specter and Adams’ Mike Ross on-screen. As a result of its success, a spin-off was put in development by NBC titled Suits LA starring Stephen Amell. But Suits’ newfound audience is still reminiscing about the original show.
Gina Torres’ Jessica Pearson is admired for being a strong woman character in Suits Season 6
Suits followed Mike Ross [Patrick J. Adams], who is gifted with a photographic memory, and starts to work as an associate for an attorney, Harvey Specter [Gabriel Macht], at Pearson Specter Litt. But the problem is Ross is a college dropout, and while Ross and Specter go on to win lawsuits and close cases, they also work together to keep Ross’s secret of never attending law school a secret.
However, toward the end of season five, the truth comes out, and he is charged with fraud for practicing law without a license. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, but when ADA threatened to go after the people he cared about, Mike Ross decided to take the plea deal and was ordered to 2 years in prison.
But the real battle was happening back at the firm, Pearson Specter Litt, where Jessica Pearson [Gina Torres] had been sued for a $100 million class action lawsuit. The law firm is sued for every case Mike Ross had ever worked on, and when Jessica Pearson tries to get her partners, Harvey Specter and Louis Litt, to work together and find a solution to the problem, she is also worried because things never really work out with them.
In situations like these, every person who comes in to help is like a savior, and Pearson Specter Litt also had a few. Jessica Pearson convinces Robert to help buy out a former partner’s buy-in so that they can settle the case. Specter, on the other hand, tries to land a big case to get some cash flow for the firm, and Litt and Donna Paulsen [Sarah Rafferty] try their best to find someone to sublet to keep paying the rent.
During this time, Rachel Zane [Meghan Markle], who had been working on the Innocence Project, reminded Jessica Pearson why she became a lawyer. She steps down from her position at the firm and joins her former boyfriend in Chicago. Even though Mike Ross had been the reason for her nightmare, Jessica Pearson saw his potential when he assisted Specter and valued his work. But as soon as Mike Ross is released from prison, Specter is adamant to make him a real lawyer, but he isn’t interested.
Instead, Adams’ character decides to get a job supervising lawyers and law students at a legal clinic. It’s eventually Jessica Pearson who not only flies down from Chicago to serve as a character witness for Ross but also convinces the panel to approve his application to sit for the bar.
It’s obviously nice to see her return for one last favor for the ones she left behind and especially for the one whose mess she had to clean. She is regarded as one of the strongest female characters on the show, and fans cannot help but admire her, look up to her, and just praise the actress who played the role with such conviction.
Gina Torres recalls how Suits changed her life
Earlier this year, in an interview with THR, actress Gina Torres was asked about the rise in popularity of the show since it started to stream on Netflix and Peacock.
The actress mentioned that she doesn’t know what to make of it, adding that it has gotten harder for her to walk through airports as she gets recognized more now.
I think it is indicative of what a great show it was. It taps into a kind of aspirational drive that we all have for ourselves and maybe a future that we see for ourselves.
Torres continued to talk about her character by stating that to be that impossibly witty, to be well-dressed, and to be that good-looking all the time is impossible. The actress joked during the conversation that she feels responsible for entirely too many new attorneys in the world.
Playing a strong character like Jessica Pearson has only empowered Torres, who says that she loves being a woman and has no desire to be anything other than who she is. She mentioned,
I don’t see my sex, my gender, as a detriment to anything that I can do. It certainly does not disqualify me from being a boss, from being intelligent, or from being capable. So, why would I sacrifice any part of that?
The actress wished the team of Suits LA good luck and said that she hopes that they have a great ride.
