Meghan’s talk about the Sussex name could upset King – but he won’t strip her of title because of Harry, claims expert

MEGHAN Markle may have left the royal family in 2020, but insists that her Sussex last name is still of importance to her in her new Netflix show.

The mum-of-two, who stars in eight 33 minute episodes of her lifestyle and cooking show ‘With Love, Meghan,’ revealed why the name was so important for her to keep.

In the second episode of the series, Meghan, 43, welcomes The US Office star Mindy Kaling who says: “People wouldn’t believe that Meghan Markle ate at Jack in the Box.”

Meghan fires back with: “It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now.”

But royal author Phil Dampier says the royal family are likely to be unhappy with her discussing her royal connections.

Prior to the show coming out Meghan also opened up about her last name in her most candid interview yet with People magazine.

She claimed that the title and last name is now important to her despite rejecting being part of the working royal family and relocating with Prince Harry, Archie and Lilibet to Montecito in LA.

She said: “It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognised how meaningful that would be to me until we had children.

“I love that that is something that ArchieLili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me.”

The Sussex name, she adds, “is part of our love story”.

The name was given to the pair after their wedding in 2018 by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Speaking to The Sun, royal author Phil Dampier said: “I doubt King Charles would like Meghan making references to the importance of Sussex as her name but I’ve always felt he’s reluctant to start any process of stripping her and Harry of their titles.

“It would be difficult to do and he doesn’t want to make the rift any worse, hoping one day there might be a reconciliation with his son.”

He also states that the show won’t do anything to mend the rift between the Sussex’s and the royal family.

“The show won’t do anything to help mend the rift between them as it’s mainly just drivel about re-arranging fruit and lighting candles,” the royal expert explained.

“At least Meghan is trying to make money out of something else besides criticising the royal family.

“But any family reconciliation will take a lot longer and a real changing of attitudes on all sides.”

Meghan Markle’s ‘jarring’ first meeting with Kate Middleton

MEGHAN and Kate are said to have had a rather fractious relationship, and the American actress revealed what happened on their first meeting.

After announcing their engagement, Meghan and Harry gave an interview to the BBC’s Mishal Husain from their home Nottingham Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace.

During the interview, Meghan praised the Royal FamilyThe Queen and her future sister-in-law Kate Middleton for all being so welcoming.

However, Meghan claimed there was a difference between how formal she and Kate were behind closed doors.

In her Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, the Duchess said: “Even when Will and Kate came over and I was meeting her for the first time I remember I was in ripped jeans, I was barefoot.

“Like I was a hugger, I have always been a hugger I didn’t realise that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.

“I started to understand that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside, that there is a forward facing way of being and then you close the door and think ‘OK we can relax now’.

“But that formality carries over on both sides and that was surprising to me.”

While it might not mend any rifts, Phil says the royal family are likely to watch a glimpse of the show ‘out of curiosity.’

“I’m sure if you asked their spokesmen both the King and William and Kate would say they won’t be watching Meghan’s show but it’s hard to believe they wouldn’t  take a sneak look out of curiosity,” he added.

“Certainly it will be very poignant and sad for the King to see a glimpse of his grandchildren who he never sees.

“Archie and Lilibet are growing up in the US with American accents and it’s very sad for Charles that he doesn’t really know them or see them.

“He dotes on William and Kate’s kids and I’m sure he would be a loving grandfather to Harry and Meghan’s children if given the chance, despite everything  that has happened.”
