Tommy Bowe stirs the pot as Ireland legend hopes Garry Ringrose gets ‘big ban’ for ‘head-butting’ Wales player

TOMMY BOWE believes Garry Ringrose is the kind of guy “you’d love your daughter to come home with”.

But he insisted the Ireland centre’s red card challenge against Wales would warrant him being chucked out of the house never to return.

Ringrose was sent to the sin-bin for a head-to-head tackle on Ben Thomas in the 35th minute of the Six Nations clash on Saturday.

After a review, it was upgraded to a 20-minute red card, with the Leinster man being the first to fall foul of the new rule this season.

However, former Ireland and Ulster winger Tommy Bowe insisted that Ringrose should be in for a bigger ban for the tackle.

Speaking on the BBC, he said: “I don’t think there’s any doubt about it, it is a red card.

“It’s a high shot by Garry Ringrose.

“Normally one of the best defenders in world rugby, but he does have a habit of coming out of the line.

“That’s Robbie Henshaw‘s man, Garry comes from the outside and tries to blindside him.

“He has to get lower.

“Ben Thomas puts a bit of footwork on him, but he has to get low.

“That’s what we want to try stamp out of the game, particularly on such a big spectacle like this.

“Garry Ringrose, a wonderful defender and a great guy.

“The sort of guy you’d love your daughter to come home with.

“Then he’s just gone and head-butted a Welsh player! He’s gone – out the door. You’re not coming in to look for my daughter!”

Ringrose never returned to the field at the Principality Stadium, as he was replaced by Bundee Aki.

The Connacht centre saw out the game as Simon Easterby‘s men came from behind with 17 straight points to run out 27-18 winners for their 14th Triple Crown.

It inches them ever closer to a third Six Nations title on the bounce, while they remain on for a second Grand Slam in three years.

However, while he was relieved to see Ireland back up to 15 men for the remainder of the game, Bowe insisted Ringrose should be in for a big punishment.

He added: “Garry Ringrose is going to be penalised, and you hope he’ll get a big ban for that.

“But, at the same time, you want Ireland to get up to 15 after 55 minutes.”
