Daredevil Born Again: The Daredevil Universe’s Connection With The Sopranos Since Its Netflix Days

Daredevil: Born Again‘s Michael Gandolfini is the bridge that oddly connects the world of The Man Without Fear and Tony Soprano. The connection between the two might be a little convoluted, but it is an interesting twist of faith nonetheless.

Robert Iler is known for his work in The Sopranos, essaying the role of A.J. Soprano, was a part of 2003’s production of Daredevil, which was a film that starred Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck as Elektra and Daredevil respectively. This has now come (sort of) full circle, with James Gandolfini’s actual son (who has also played Tony Soprano), Michael Gandolfini starring in Daredevil: Born Again.

Daniel Blake, the character that will be appearing in Daredevil: Born Again as a part of Fisk’s mayoral staff, will be played by Michael Gandolfini. This seems to be an original character made for the MCU, and the focus on the character in the trailer suggests that he will be taking up the position that James Wesley, played to perfection by Toby Leonard Moore. It makes sense that Wilson Fisk would get a henchman, given that he is going to be set up as the chief antagonist of the street-level side of the MCU.

Speaking with Collider, Michael Gandolfini has revealed that his character is from Staten Island, which is all that can be said, according to the actor. The character remains one of the biggest mysteries from the Daredevil: Born Again teaser. It remains to be seen what the character ends up doing in the show, and whether he serves as an ally or a foe to Matt, Foggy and Karen.

Who else could make an appearance in Daredevil: Born Again?

Daredevil: Born Again is set to feature The Punisher and The White Tiger as other vigilantes in the show. It has been revealed by Marvel that Spider-Man cannot be used by Marvel Studios, except in animated shows under 30 mins.

However, there are other characters in the street-level canon of the MCU who could make an appearance in the show, such as Moon Knight, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, or even Jessica Jones. These characters had managed to make quite the small, isolated universe of their own on Netflix, being parallel to the MCU but never quite being as connected to the mainline universe.

Daredevil: Born Again marks the first time when a character from the Netflix side of Marvel Studios is finally getting inducted into the MCU, which opens up hope for other shows too. There are fans that would still like to see Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D legitimized in the MCU, what with its Inhumans and Ghost Rider, but it remains to be seen if the MCU even recognizes that part of the Marvel Universe ever again.

Daredevil: Born Again will begin streaming March 4, 2025 on Disney+.
