Maomao might not let in a lot of people in her life, but in The Apothecary Diaries, she has an incredible relationship with her adoptive father and mentor, Luomen. His importance to the overall storyline is immeasurable. He’s the reason why the protagonist is this independent and smart.

Luomen’s backstory in The Apothecary Diaries, however, is full of cruelty and injustice. He was the former physician of the Imperial Court, until the simultaneous births of the Imperial Brother and the Emperor and Ah-Duo’s son, Jinshi.
The latter orchestrated a switch that resulted in the unfortunate death of the brother. Luomen was beaten, with a kneecap forcefully removed, and exiled, along with Lakan. The La Clan deemed him a dishonor to their family.
Currently, he has returned to the Imperial Palace to assist with Gyokuyou and Lihua’s pregnancies. Some fans ask if his exile will be lifted. However, we’d argue he deserves more.
Why Luomen deserves an official apology and not just a pardon
The palace had forced Luomen to prioritize the former Emperor’s son rather than Ah-Duo’s more complicated pregnancy, despite his protests. The switch saved Jinshi’s life but the real Imperial brother died. However, the blame was on Fengming who fed him poisonous honey.

So, despite saving Ah-Duo and not being responsible for the brother’s death, Luomen was blamed and exiled for the ordeal. Lakan, too, was exiled just for being close to his uncle and couldn’t reunite with Fengxian and his daughter.
Thankfully, Luomen raised Maomao and became an apothecary in the red-light district. He helped others and gave the protagonist the knowledge she needed to be more. The inner court also finally swallows their pride and allows him to return to assist with the difficult pregnancies.
The Apothecary Diaries fans on Reddit, however, argue that Luomen has nothing to be pardoned for. He couldn’t tend to two pregnancies. If anything, he deserves an apology.

He gets reinstated as the court physician after successfully delivering the Crown Prince, the Emperor and Gyokuyou’s son. It seems his “crimes” have just been swept under the rug rather than addressing who’s really to blame.
Luomen should never have been exiled
When tragedy strikes, people look for someone to blame. As the court physician, Luomen was their punching bag. Losing an heir is a huge deal, but Fengming should’ve taken the blame.

While she understandably panicked and did not want to get blamed, it caused Luomen’s life and reputation to be ruined. He deserves justice and an official apology which we know is never coming. Now that he is the court physician again, at least the palace will have better medical care.
Still, if the exile hadn’t occurred, we don’t know what would’ve happened to Maomao. He saved her from more abuse and raised her well. Although he lost his reputation, he gained a daughter and a legacy to be proud of.
