One of the biggest villains of the One Piece universe, Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard, has been a powerful force since the beginning of the series. He has proven himself to be a dangerous antagonist multiple times, and One Piece fans are eagerly waiting for him to battle it out with the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, to find out who is the strongest of the two.

It is safe to assume that Blackbeard won’t be an easy fight, and there are many reasons behind it, but the biggest one is his ability to hold more than one Devil Fruit power. As fans know, Blackbeard carries the Yami Yami no Mi and the Gura Gura no Mi, and there have been speculations about him finding a third Devil Fruit that will make him even stronger.
However, according to a One Piece theory, there is a big possibility that Blackbeard might not be able to harness the powers of a third Devil Fruit. This theory also reveals why Blackbeard has never slept in his life and how it is all connected to his first Devil Fruit: The Yami Yami no Mi.
Blackbeard’s ability to harness more than one Devil Fruit
From the moment that Blackbeard’s character was first introduced in One Piece, his fascination with Devil Fruits has been one of the most prominent characteristics of his personality. First, it was the Yami Yami no Mi, for which he killed his own crewmate and betrayed his entire crew. Then it was the Gura Gura no Mi, which he stole from Whitebeard’s corpse during Marineford.
And although he currently possesses two of the strongest Devil Fruits in the history of One Piece, his hunger and search for more powerful Devil Fruits still continue. This is why he attacked Boa Hancock on Amazon and would have almost won if it had not been for Rayleigh saving Boa and forcing Blackbeard to run away.

This search for Devil Fruits has prompted One Piece fans to speculate that maybe Blackbeard is trying to get a third Devil Fruit for himself. However, neither Eiichiro Oda nor Blackbeard has confirmed this, which makes his character development within the story even more mysterious.
One Piece theory suggests Blackbeard might not be able to hold the power of another Devil Fruit
According to a theory posted by u/Kaporalhart on Reddit, the power of the Yami Yami no Mi is constantly suppressing the powers of Gura Gura no Mi, and it’s the only thing that is keeping him alive.

The theory states that any individual in One Piece who consumes more than one Devil Fruit is bound to blow up because of the clash of the Devil Fruit powers within the body.

However, the Yami Yami no Mi allows Blackbeard to suppress the powers of other Devil Fruits, and it is probably the only Devil Fruit that can do so. Thus, it is constantly suppressing the powers of the Gura Gura no Mi; otherwise, Blackbeard would have blown up long ago. Controlling both of his Devil Fruits is a constant effort that forbids Blackbeard from sleeping.
Thus, if he consumes another Devil Fruit, there is a big possibility that the Yami Yami no Mi might lose control, and the power of all three Devil Fruits might clash within Blackbeard, which would kill him. This proves that he most likely won’t take a chance with another Devil Fruit in One Piece, and his search for the Devil Fruit is for some other purpose.
