Jinshi and the Emperor’s Dynamics Were Cut Out of ‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Despite Almost Turning Maomao Into a Royal Consort

The Apothecary Diaries has garnered a massive fan following since it began airing in 2023. The ongoing Season 2 has only made the fan base bigger. Jinshi and Maomao as the main characters obviously are a huge reason behind it.

The enigmatic Emperor, too, has attracted many people. Episode 7, which was aired last week, though, seems to have created a tad bit of a conflict in the growing fandom.

Although the anime does a terrific job of adapting Natsu Hyuga’s story, the subtler storytelling has altered one key aspect from the manga. Especially since it has resulted in the absence of a sequence that could have given a better insight into Jinshi and the Emperor’s relationship.

The Apothecary Diaries traded a key sequence from the manga to keep up its subtle narrative

Season 2 of The Apothecary Diaries is going strong with each episode. Along with millions of returning fans from Season 1, the ongoing Season also brought in numerous new appreciators. The manga, and the Light Novels, too, have their own fan base with the majority of them joining in to watch how the anime progresses Maomao’s story.

One of the things that has been the drawing charm for the show all along has been the subtle, simplistic narrative the show utilizes to touch upon some severe subjects. Although the whimsical storytelling works the best in the show, there is one particular sequence where the manga did a better job.

That was, during the Episode 7 of Season 2, when Maomao is suddenly pulled into a trip to the Shrine of Choosing with Jinshi and the Emperor without any explanation after she expressed her fascination with the rundown building.

That sequence, too, was translated masterfully to the screen, until it came to the Emperor making a certain joke at Maomao’s expense. Fans are aware that after the Emperor’s initial failure, Maomao asks to go through the shrine again when she is challenged by the old teacher who accompanied them.

However, since she was neither a consort, nor a princess, her request was denied. Until of course the Emperor joins in the conversation with his own two cents saying,

Then shall I elevate her to a consort? Though convincing Lakan will be troublesome!

Both Maomao and Jinshi gasp, and protest at the joke, albeit silently in Maomao’s case. Jinshi, though, had no trouble voicing his objection loudly, stating,

You must be joking! What would the other consorts think?

The Emperor, of course, laughs at his son’s antics after successfully riling him up. This sequence provides a vital insight into their playful and intimate dynamic.

However, this is also where The Apothecary Diaries anime deviated slightly from the manga. This has displeased many fans since, according to them, the manga etched it out even better.

Fans aren’t too happy with The Apothecary Diaries due to the lack of focus on the Emperor and Jinshi’s dynamic

Although not much has been altered from the original sequence in The Apothecary Diaries manga, two vital elements have been cut out in the show. For example, when the Emperor joked about making Maomao his Royal consort, he added a line after the sentences that made it to the anime.

[To Jinshi] But, you would have no objections then correct?

Jinshi predictably went bonkers at the crude implication. To drive his point even further, though, he snatched Maomao closer to him from under the Emperor’s grip, making his objection crystal clear.

Although the rest of the sequence played out pretty much the same in the manga, fans believe this should have made it to the anime. Not only because it expounds on the carefree dynamic Jinshi shares with the Emperor, but also because it highlights his feelings regarding Maomao more prominently.

I Love the anime but for this scene I prefer the manga ver

At any rate, the show seems to be doing a terrific job of portraying the story in a neat and compact manner all while touching upon a range of different themes. Only time will tell how successful it will be in the future.

For now, though, The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 seems to be progressing into a terrific climax with a hoard of new characters into the mix.

The Apothecary Diaries is streaming on Crunchyroll.
